Seven years without a clear plan from Canucks brass.

His free agent signings have absolutely been his biggest problem. Trades aremt that far off though. -

Nashville traded Weber and his terrible contract for PK Subban and his terrible contract though. At the time both were still very productive players. Anyone who thinks Arizona would have traded OEL for Eriksson AND retained 2 mil in doing so (aGENT) is on crack. Anyone who thinks Benning did not see OEL as the answer to our defense and would have overpaid to get him just isnt paying attention to how god awful his pro scouting ability really is. -

You probably should. Most of the time thats what i do with yours. I am assuming by your response you liked the Gudbranson and Sutter trades? And all the trades for tweeners that didnt pan out? I am curious to hear why you think they were not overpayments by Benning. -
Ya i actually said last night i figured he would have fought Simmonds after and tuned a weaker Leafs player as retribution. I stand corrected. And disappointed tbh. I think Bieksa is realizing that his path to moving up the media ladder hinges on developing an ability to absolve Leaf players of any responsibility. I have heard him say before that tough guys should not go after weaker guys but take on the other teams tough guys to settle "the code". Just gotta try to figure out which version of Bieksa to believe i guess.

Its not bias, its just reality. Take a look at his trade history. Miller and Schmidt were cap relief trades for their previous teams. Gudbranson for Pearson was ok but his original trade for Gudbranson wipes out any possible positive to it. Sutter trade was garbage. Pretty much everything else is either bleeding picks and/or taking back tweeners or projects that 9 to 1 havent worked out. -

He is not garbage but he is not very good either. Especially for his cap hit. I am saying its unlikely BENNING could have gotten him without significantly overpaying. Most other GMs maybe but Benning was so fixated on oel being the solution its pretty much a guarantee he would have overpaid significantly. -
So they should ask Bieksa if he thinks a tougher canuck (if there is one lol) should be able to tune Lillegren next game with no instigator or repurcussions for knocking out Motte on a CLEARLY intentional cheap shot. As far as I know that happened after the Edler fight so clearly Bieksa might be a bit wrong in saying Toronto considered it squared up and did not go after a Canuck player with an intent to injure him.

I would not have been surprised at all to see a 1st or 2nd and one of Podz or Hoglander going the other way with no retention on OEL. I dont see Eriksson ever being in that deal tbh. -

Good luck them taking Eriksson and retaining on OEL. Come on. Unless they were getting a 1st and a high end prospect or two that would not have ever been in the realm of possibility. OEL wasnt particularly good last year either, before Benning decided he was the answer to focus all his energy on. -
And look at all the people assuming it is true simply because they dont like Virtanen. If its false it could ruin his life and his career. If its true then throw the book at him and he deserves what he gets. But posting it on social media is the wrong first step. Calling the police is the right one. It shouldnt matter if someone is famous. People on here should wait for actual facts to be presented before deciding anything about it. People complain about the media saying Quinn Hughes was on an iv but its ok for some random cdc member to screenshot a private page and post it here then admit they did it because they wanted to be the first to break the story on here? Honestly, the member who posted it should be banned.

There is a plan, its just a plan to react year to year and minute to minute to change the focus. They rely on goalies standing on their heads to be competitive at all. On balance, this is probably the worst constructed team outside of Buffalo considering all the cap he has had and solid prospects his drafting has produced. Eriksson, Baertschi, Ferland, Sutter, Beagle, Roussel, Gagner-to-a-Spooner-Buyout, and a waiver wire bottom 6 that sure hustles but adds literally nothing positive to a game more than once in awhile. I would not hire this management team to run a garage sale. -

Any trade protection in a contract is, in fact, highly limiting. Its compounded when the cap hit is "a million too much" and the term "a year or two too long". With the cap situation in the nhl, trading is pretty tough. So even having a handful of teams you wont accept a trade to can effectively shut down any possibility at all of being moved. Players and agents seem to know this better than Benning which os why they keep asking for and receiving trade protection. -
Gaudette was never given an actual legitimate shot in the top 6. A few shifts here and there usually replaced quickly by a plug though. Playing with guys like Sutter, Boyd, Roussel, etc. its not hard to see why limited offense was being created. But even in that role its not like he wasnt generating chances. The few sporadic shifts he played up with good players he did fine generating offensive chances though. Highmore has been given tons more ice time than Gaudette ever got and if we are being honest has done next to nothing with it. Maybe one or two offensive chances total in all those games. Benning says he is a betted two way player. Lol. Better defensively maybe. Better offensively? Not even close. No wonder people think Benning cant assess pro talent properly.
-
We have been conditioned for so many years now to believe that all young players have to be great defensively or they are garbage. Offensive creativity is a lot harder to find though. Its easier to replace guys like Highmore, Boyd, Hawryluk, etc. than it is to replace players with offensive creativity. The last several games have clearly showed that.

I dont overrate him, many others here do. Miller and Gaudette are both pretty good defensive players. Where they excel defensively is by controlling play in the offensive zone though. The black hole of wingers with them are all dump and turn over the puck types. Gaudette is much better at puck possession style that works better with those other 2.
