  1. Spoken like someone who has never actually trained for a sport in their life. Most of "getting in shape", conditioning, skill development, etc happens outside games bud.
  2. I like Bieksa as a commentator/analyst but the reality is he complains a lot about back in the good old days with things he got offended by with the media. I dont think he comes across as biased toward or against Benning. He seems pretty biased against the media though. But he also usually does say he knows they have a job to do and never as far as i kniw has said nothing they report is ever true. Its their job to ask questions. And the reality is no one would read their stuff if it was all about how everything is perfect and there is nothing to question or complain about. Green getting pissed off at a pretty softball question says more about Green than anything. Every coach gets asked that question pretty much every day. Its an easy answer. Same with the Holtby one. Gets asked dvery day to every goalie. How are either of the questions you give as examples considered false rumors and controversy creating?
  3. Discounting everything the media reports because a player denies a specific story is not really practical or reasonable though. It could be that the story was wrong for sure. But it is actually still possible that Hughes was actually on an iv and that he and the team wouldnt want it confirmed. That kind of stuff happens all the time. Players and teams lie all the time too in order to fit their narrative. The media is far from perfect. But they do report a lot of things that are true. Benning supporters dont like the media because they regularly call him out on his numerous contradictions. I get it. I am sure that is frustrating.
  4. Honestly? The Canucks should have pushed for more time to prepare to get back to playing. As the games have clearly shown, a good number of players do not have their conditioning to a level where they can compete for 60 minutes. If this had happened to Boston, or Tampa Bay, or Toronto, etc. there is zero chance those teams would have not pushed back hard on a dangerously abbreviated time for return to games. And the NHL wouldnt have expected them to. Its been widely reported that the players thrmselves were unhappy with how the Canucks basically caved to the nhl demands.
  5. The difference is Chicago didnt open up a roster spot trading Highmore. He was scratched 9 of their last 11 games. So maybe Bowman and Colliton know something we don't. Like he is not in game shape yet after having covid. Maybe after trying him in that game they decided not to play him until he was. Who knows? Just because the Canucks didnt put their players safety as the top priority doesnt mean Chicago isnt. What doesnt make sense is that Chi has given up on Gaudette after a handful of games. They didnt need to trade Highmore if they wanted to get rid of him. They could have just waived him and sent him down. Maybe they wanted him for the expansion draft but even if they do think he is a writeoff like Benning does, if they want him taken over others it also serves their interests to actually play him.
  6. Granlund did not have a 33 point season prior to being traded to the Canucks though. He had actually shown very little at the NHL level. To compare these trades, Granlund would be Highmore. Shinkaruk would then have to be Gaudette. Clearly that is not the case at all. The best thing for Gaudette would probably be getting taken by Seattle. They might even use him in their top 6.
  7. He may end up being taken by Seattle. Depends on who else is available. Chicago is in abit different situation. They dont need to rush him in. They traded a healthy scratch for him. Maybe they are concentrating on fitting him in arole he can thrive in rather than shoehorn him into an ill fitting one. The fact that the Canucks are using a CHI healthy scratch as a 3rd line winger really gives a good indication of where both teams are at overall.
  8. Unlike the Canucks who dont seem to be too concerned about most of their players clearly not having their conditioning levels up to par, the Hawks dont really need to rush him in. They didnt lose a regular roster player in Highmore so there was no clear hole to fill unlike with Gaudette leaving Van.
  9. I dont see the similarities really. Shinkaruk was not even a reasonably established nhl player at the time. Gaudette has at least shown some ability to play in the nhl.
  10. Sounds like the Hawks are taking it slow with him and want to get him up to speed on their systems and also make sure his conditioning has completely recovered itself back into game shape after a long layoff.
  11. Changing from one wing to the other is the easiest transition in hockey.
  12. Goldobin and Boucher probably should have been given more of an opportunity in an offensive role tbh. Gaudette being expected to produce consistent offense with his typical linemates is pretty unrealistic. His shooting percentage was pretty low too which does suggest he was a bit snake bitten. He was still creating a reasonable amount of offensive chances and plays though. He was not nearly as bad offensively as people now suggest. He was just on a line with plugs in an ill fitted role on a team that overall was playing like garbage. He does need to clean up his game defensively. But as we have seen, not being able to score goals is also something that makes it harder to win games. Having a bunch of hustling bottom 6 guys or a bunch of safe vets in the bottom 6 has not made this team any better offensively. And it hasnt even made them better defensively as they still give up a lot of chances and goals againt.
  13. Skill matters too. More than the other 2 combined. A player with experience can still be a bad player. No one cares about when players are arbitrarily "in their prime". Players outside those ages at both ends can and do perform well. A player in their prime can still be a player who isnt very good.
  14. I doubt they will want to use Lind at center. I say start him on the wing with Miller and Boeser.
  15. The Canucks need a jolt of energy. Is a good time to give a couple of young guys a shot. And by shot i dont mean play them 5-7 minutes in a sheltered role. See what they actually have. Wouldnt mind seeing: On D Hughes-Hamonic Rathbone-Schmidt Juolevi-Myers Rest Edler On F Pearson-Horvat-Hoglander Lind-Miller-Boeser Motte-Sutter-Hawryluk Roussel/Highmore-Boyd-Virtanen Vesey out
  16. Highmore is also a far more replaceable type of player though. There is a reason GM's typically overvalue offensive ability. Because its a lot harder to score at the nhl level than it is to hustle and not generate offense. Gaudette in the right role could be a very good scorer. And learning to bedefensively responsible usually takes offensive players a bit longer. I think he will be fine. I am glad for him he got moved. I do expect it will eventually come back to haunt us though.
  17. Again, all that proves is Benning has mangled the cap situation so badly he has no flexibility. Bittom feeding cap maxed teams have done something seriously wrong in handling contracts and pro scouting ability imo.
  18. Fair points. I think the frustration i have is that typically even after the Canucks havd been mathematically eliminated they still stick with the must win over trying the young guys mentality. The last thing i want to see is another year where once they are eliminated they dont give the young guys a real, unsheltered look in various roles to just stick with bottom 6 tweeners or waiver wire pickups.
  19. Not even sure what your point is. Mine is that being an older team is not by itself an indication you will be a better team. Those older players still have to actually be good players.
  20. The NHL is a different beast. But until you see what young players can do in the nhl you have no idea if they can translate their success. Guys like Lind, Gads, Rathbone have shown they deserve an opportunity. If Benning didnt mangle the cap situation with a bunch of overpriced vets any elcbonuses would be moot. Green has no contract for next year. He has no reason to do what needs to be done and see what young players can do even though this year is a perfect opportunity to do so.
  21. Saying a team being older in average age is better ignores so many actually important variables that its the very definition of a superficial analysis. Those playoff teams are better because they have better players no matter what their age. That is the point @Azzy was making. If young players have an opportunity they could be better than those average or worse vets.
  22. Actually they better be as good as Highmore, Hawryluk, Vesey, Boyd. Which they easily could be if they ever got the chance to show it.
  23. I'm not the one suggesting any old player is automatically better than any young player. Thats your god awful theory that holds no water.
  24. And sometimes its better to let those young guys play 13-15 min in the nhl over aging plugs and ahl tweeners.
