  1. The sens have played much better the last little while. They are not an easy 2 points right now. The Canucks need to play a lot better to beat them. The PP is pretty much the same predictable, drop pass cluster&^@# it has been for awhile under Newell Brown, at least since the league figured out how to defend against it a long time ago. Sheer talent only gets you so far. It definitely needs an overhaul. The player talent is there but man is it predictable and easy to defend against.
  2. Fan is short for fanatic. The only type of fan base an NHL team takes issue with is an apathetic one who dont give a $&!# about the team. As long as the fans who call them Dim Jim keep buying merchandise, tickets, etc. they are fine. A "toxic fanbase" still means one that at least cares.
  3. He probably did hold on to Gillis too long. And AV did deserve to be fired.
  4. The local media are not the fanbase. The complaint from Bieksa was how the media can create drama for the team and players through what they report. Every professional sports team can be described as having a toxic fan base to some degree. Ours isnt any worse than many others. If Benning or any player is so thin skinned that fans flying a banner would bother them then they need to go asap. Oh, and 20 plus years of dealing with actual pro athletes has produced exactly 0 cases of me ever hearing one of them bring up, in any context, a toxic fanbase as a major complaint. In my personal experience its not a big deal to them because they just accept it is just part of the gig to deal with criticism, even if its unfair or hyperbolic. I dont think you understand the kind of pressure they deal with every day. Toxic fans would not rank very high on their list of concerns. Certainly not high enough to elicit demands for more money to sign as a ufa. That was one of the most ridiculous statements I have seen on cdc.
  5. The officiating was bad but the Canucks did not play well. Not sure what is going on with their inability to pass a puck cleanly but it was painful to watch.
  6. Players in general dont care what fans think of them. They know what comes with the territory. I would bet good money not a single player has ever brought up a teams fans, their online forums, their vitriol toward certain players, etc. in a contract negotiation ever for any team.
  7. Getting value out of assets is kind of the whole goal and absolutely should be a focus. Whether that is value on the ice, with their contract, in a trade, etc., its still the entire goal of the team to get value out of them. If not, then why not just sign a beer league team of nice accountants and construction workers who like to pal around and have fun? Its not atom rep where the coach puts all his kid's friends on the team even if they suck at hockey. So you are saying there was no value in retaining Toffoli, Tanev, Markstrom, Stecher then? All of them seemed to be well liked. And why not get assets for them rather than let them walk for nothing? That hardly seems evil. Is it fair to say chasing a terrible long term contract on a declining player we didn't need who wasnt on our team (OEL) and not even bothering to talk to Toffoli or Tanev until the last minute was the GM "team building" and treating those players like valuable humans and players? I would have kept either of those players over Pearson every day of the week. And I would have rather had either than OEL.
  8. I would say Gillis held onto AV for at least a season too long. And the Torts hiring was just doomed from the start.
  9. Do people not remember the Fire Gillis chant? This is basically the same thing. I dont think its a big deal.
  10. I saw a quote of the specific rule but have no idea where it is lol. I will see if I can dig it up. I believe it came down to the expansion draft being before the start of the ufa period. Pending UFA can still be claimed as a selection from their team i believe.
  11. Even if they had given him a nmc on his extension it would not have guaranteed him protection. He needed to have the nmcthis year. Hence the reported verbal agreement. It was the only guaranteed way to get protection for Pearson.
  12. The Canucks are playing like crap. Not sure why everyone is blaming the refs or covid or any other reason. Switching the lines was a bad decision. But the Canucks have not played well enough to win or even be in the game.
  13. Its been reported (not sure if true) he has a verbal agreement with Benning to be protected because even giving him a nmc on his new contract would not have given him automatic protection because he doesnt have the nmc this year. I guess we will find out if he gets protected and who doesnt as a result.
  14. If his contract was based on this year at all (or the one before last) he would be 2 yrs, 2.5 mil tops. And definitely no ntc or expansion protection.
  15. Its paying for what he has done in the past AND what he is doing this year. Which is improving at several things as a player. Pearson sandwiched a career year between a career low one and whats on a similar close to career low one again this year. Thats apples and oranges bud. Pearson got paid for last year and in spite of the other 2. The contract will be reasonable value only in a best case scenario.
  16. I never tell anyone they should make my opinions theirs. I have opinions because I am a fan of the team. I dont care if anyone shates my opinions or not lol.
  17. So wouldnt that suggest Benning did not in fact "team build" but set the team back in those areas?
  18. "Asset management" and all of the stuff you mention are not mutually exclusive. The NHL is a business. Players understand that. Off ice stuff, chemistry, etc does play a role but I can tell you that dollars and cents is the driving force.
  19. Context matters though. Gillis signings came back to haunt him at the end, thats true. But he also had a successful team that he was trying to recapture the magic with. In hindsight it didnt work and heshoukd have blown it up way sooner. But a lot of what he did was understandable in that context. Gillis gave out ntc in exchange for cap hit concessions in most cases. He rarely gave all of dollars, term, and trade protection up in a deal. Benning regularly does. The trade for Ballard is another the looks far worse in hindsight but with thecontext at the time you could at least see the reasoning. Mitchell was coming off a potential career ending injury so they clearly werent comfortable bringing him back. He of course went on to play fine and win a couple of cups. But at the time the risk was real. Ballard was a consistent, physical top 4 two way dman who was durable and played tough minutes effectively. The hip surgery before trading for him should have been a red flag but at the timeno one could have predicted just how badly he would regress. Partially due to injuries, partially due to a clear dislike of his hame from AV, and partially just Ballard himself regressing. The trade was fine at the time, not great but ok and understandable. Signing Hamhuis effectively pushed Ballard out of the spot he was probably meant to fill when Gillis traded for him. It only looks this bad in hindsight. Getting Miller and Schmidt were good trades. But their teams were also in need of offloading cap. He didnt swindle them. TB got to sign Point as a result. Vegas got Pietrangelo and needed that cap. Drafting Petey and Hughes is AMATEUR scouting, which Benning has been pretty good at. Virtanen and Juolevi over others keep that from being very good. You conveniently ignore a very long list of Benning pro scouting disasters right from day 1 and only focus on a few good ones. Overall his pro scouting combined with his valuing those players contracts has been absolutely terrible.
  20. Overall? Not great. The last couple of games? Pretty good. Context matters and passive aggressive "they won two games, suck on that haterz" is just as bad a look as "They had a terrible season until recently, suck on that Benning lovers!" Both extremes are ridiculous imo.
