You will have to show me where I said Gaudette was elite. I said: 1. The Canucks were the ones who didn’t recognize that Gaudette was not a 3rd line defensive center. All the people saying he needs to score to stick are right. But the only ones who didn’t seem to know that from the minute he was drafted was Benning and the Canucks coaches. They are the ones who kept trying the square peg in the round hole approach with him really. 2. When you are using offensive dynamos like Vesey and Boyd in your top 6 and are a bottom feeder team, why not try to play Gaudette there if for no reason other than to pump his value before you dump him? 3. Highmore is a plug. A fast one but still a plug. I would prefer project players that can provide offense over ones that skate fast and do nothing else of value, but that’s just me. I stand by all of those things even now.

If the job is skate fast, put yourself out of position, drive by instead of hitting, and providing next to nothing offensively, Highmore is definitely your guy! -
I remember how much we made fun of Edmonton for so many years for their approach to management, coaching, and team building decisions. Let’s see how many of those boxes are checked off with our current team and be objective. Former players from the team for management - check Overhyped rookie coach and ineffective assistant coaches hired based on relationships rather than skill and experience - check Building a roster based on skill and puck possession forwards then using a dump and chase offensive system - check Many years of futility following this hiring approach - check Ignoring building an nhl quality defense - check Accepting a losing culture and making excuses how outside factors wrecked things - check In reality, the Canucks are now the Oilers we made fun of for so long.

Possession players are great to have. No one on this team currently plays like the Sedins did. No one has the skill and ability they did with the style they played. They have no experience as executives. Assistant GM’s maybe. Co-PoHO though? Not anytime soon. That whole job is to set the direction of the team really.

Shaw as interim coach would be fine. It’s definitely better than giving Benning another long term $&!# coach we will be stuck with if he ends up getting fired. I would rather the next gm have the time to hire the right long term coach. But that is due to me believing Green and Benning need to go now.

In most circumstances I would agree. In this one I disagree. I think a move needs to happen if for no reason other than to give the players some confidence that ownership demands better and to give them some hope. This team badly needs a PoHO. I think the best move right now is to hire Jim Rutherford as PoHO and interim GM. Let him do a comprehensive GM search. Start by talking to Jeff Gorton IMO. Fire Green and anyone not named Shaw or Clark. Make Shaw interim coach and add experienced assistant coaches, maybe even a few former head coaches hungry for another shot. Let the new GM evaluate Shaw and take the time to find the best coach possible. To me, the most important thing right now is to give the players a reset where they have to earn their jobs and roles again. Benning and Green are too attached to certain players and it has clouded their objectivity and their ability to do what is needed to right the ship.

It’s a culture problem IMO. That starts with ownership, management, and coaching. The players look frustrated, confused, and pissed off at the losing culture. Do you know how hard it is to stay motivated in that environment? OEL is on this team because he did in Arizona exactly what our key players are doing here now. He mailed it in because of frustration at being on a rudderless ship.

Neither of those contracts are discounts IMO. Garland is great but has a very small body of work to justify that much for that long. It could be a discount if all goes according to plan but wasn’t when signed. Same with Hughes. He wasn’t worth that much when he signed due to a terrible defensive game. Could be a discount eventually but wasn’t at signing. I am pretty meh on Gear. Doesn’t move the needle enough to really give a crap if he stays or goes. But with the cancerous culture at the top a clean sweep makes more sense to me. Contract guys are pretty easy to find tbh.
