  1. Re-signing RFA players and fringe NHL depth guys is way different than the territory we will be entering now though. Key RFA and UFA players will need re-signing. Do we really think they are going to be lining up to give discounts for a team too cheap to fire a gm and coach who are this bad? EP and Hughes certainly didn’t take big discounts.
  2. I don’t really see our contracts as being stellar tbh. Not bad but not great other than a couple of RFA ones. Our UFA contracts have been a complete disaster. Too much term, too many dollars, and too many trade clauses handed out. The cost to jettison those problems has been high and has cost the team at least a few years of their contending window. Aquilini is super cheap on front office staff. The Canucks have the thinnest, most power concentrated head office and hockey ops structure in the entire nhl.
  3. Honestly, nothing more than guilt by association really. Anyone loyal to the current regime needs to go. It needs a completely fresh perspective IMO.
  4. He was egotistical like that as a player too (and really didn’t have much right to be). Always someone else’s fault if things didn’t go his way. No reason to expect he would change as a coach.
  5. The problem is that’s not the Canucks actual identity. It’s just the one they talk a good game about wanting to have. Look at Green’s post game last night. And basically anytime Benning ever talks about anything. Neither accept any responsibility for their role in the sad state of this team. Why do people wonder why no one on this team shows any urgency or accountability? Leadership and identity start at the top.
  6. I think what needs to happen is: - Fire Benning, Weisbrod, and Gear. - Hire Jim Rutherford as PoHO and interim GM. Let him do a comprehensive search for a long term GM. Groton would be great to consider IMO. - Fire Green, Baumgartner, King, etc. Anyone not named Clark or Shaw. - Make Shaw interim head coach and hire experienced, qualified assistant coaches that can stay on with Shw or a new coach. Brining in a former head coach or two itching for another shot might create some urgency within the staff and with Shaw.
  7. Green lacks any ability to reflect on what he needs to do better. Getting fired and humbled will help him reflect on what he needs to change to be a better coach.
  8. I don’t see a single team that would fire their coach to hire Green if he got fired. I didn’t buy the story that Seattle would have scooped him up either. He is just not a good coach or leader. Last nights post game clearly showed he assigns zero accountability to himself or his staff. How any player could respect him after that is beyond me.
  9. 2nd head coaching gig after a big layoff. Coaches regularly say being fired from their first job makes them reflect on what they need to change and improve on and makes them better coaches. last nights post game is a clear indication Green could use that dose of reality and humility to gain perspective about himself.
  10. He would not be the worst option and would certainly be better than Green. It’s a very different team than he had last time. I just don’t see it happening but if they accepted his message he would get a lot more out of a group like this.
  11. Our PK just might be this desperate though. And at least he is physical.
  12. The players are playing like losing is “part of the process” and just fine with them. The coaches are coaching like it too. Dump and change offense and passive defense doesn’t work in minor hockey. Stands to reason it won’t work in the nhl.
  13. I watched it. Honestly, if he isn’t fired for that he is untouchable. He was asked specifically what his responsibility is in the slow starts, etc. and if he worries the players aren’t hearing his message. His answer was zero accountability on himself. Just threw the players under the bus completely. He has clearly lost the room and if he hasn’t, that presser will do it. And I hate his arrogance with the media too. What has he done to earn the right to be flippant?
  14. This roster has serious holes. I guess I didn’t word that correctly. With a better coaching staff, this should be a playoff team this season IF Demko holds up the way he has. Maybe a 1st round bounce but still should be good enough. Given the time and resources Benning has had, this team should be a true contender by now. His bigger, longer mistakes really set the team back. A fresh set of eyes not in love with certain players (looking at you Pearson) who can objectively fill the holes on this roster effectively is a necessity now. Benning has lost his objectivity if he ever actually had any.
  15. Remember how we made fun of the Oilers for buying into the Toronto media AHL hype for Dallas Eakins? Green is pretty much our version of that.
  16. If the players have been infected to that degree by the losing culture and leadership surrounding this team, they will eventually need to go or will move on because they are fed up. Never underestimate the power and value in having a team and players with heart. I think many on this team have it they have just forgotten how to apply it. That happens a lot with losing or good enough to get by cultures in any business. Hockey is no different.
  17. That is a clear sign a big issue is coaching and their decisions on systems and roles.
  18. Weisbrod is a known cancer once he weasels his way in. The departure of guys like Linden, Brackett, etc has Weisbrod’s MO all over it. Centralize decision making with himself and Benning. Push out any dissenting voices. He has done it everywhere he has been. If Benning is fired I fully expect him to take over tbh.
  19. What blows me away is they cheap out on front office and coaching. Even if they have to eat contracts for Benning, Weisbrod, Green, Baumgartner, etc. you would think as successful businessmen they would understand how important investing in leadership is and how it’s the kiss of death to keep throwing good money after bad on inferior leadership. This roster should be playing like a solid playoff competitor already. Benning stuck with the coaching staff now both staffs need to take the bullet for that huge mistake.
  20. Benning has given no one the confidence that he should be trusted with another coaching hire. He tied his fate to Green and Baumgartner and needs to be fired. Weisbrod is a clown and should have never been hired in the first place. Fire him too. And hire a guy like Jim Rutherford as PoHO and interim GM and let him do an exhaustive search for a GM. Let Shaw take the reigns with new, qualified assistants and give him an audition. Once the new GM is hired, let him do an exhaustive coaching search, including Shaw in the mix. Many say Horvat and the players advocated for Green and Baumgartner. If that’s true, welcome to the same old country club (and losing culture) we have seen for a decade. Players should not choose coaches. Good coaches are actually the leaders of the team.
