  1. Wonderful story about sacrifice and savings Essentially, it is about the basics of how to succeed in this dynamic life we live in. Work hard, save your money, invest it wisely and don’t foolishly purchase what you don’t need… and you too can be a successful millionaire. Every morning, the CEO of a large bank in Manhattan walked to the corner for a shoeshine. He sat in an armchair, examined the Wall Street Journal and the shoe shiner buffed his shoes to a mirror shine. One morning the shoe shiner asked the CEO, “What do you think about the situation in the stock market?” The businessman answered arrogantly, “Why are you so interested in that topic?” The shoe guy replied, “I have millions in your bank and I’m considering investing some of the money in the capital market.” “What’s your name?” asked the executive. “John H. Smith,” was the reply. The CEO arrived at the bank and asked the Manager of the Customer Service Department, “Do we have a client named John H. Smith? We certainly do,” answered the Manager. “He is a high-net-worth customer with 12.6 million dollars in his account.” The astonished executive came out, approached the shoe shiner, and said, “Mr. Smith, I would like to invite you next Monday to be the guest of honor at our Board meeting and tell us the story of your life. I’m sure we could learn something from your life’s experience.” At the board meeting, the CEO introduced him to the Board Members. “We all know Mr. Smith, from the corner shoeshine stand, but Mr. Smith is also an esteemed customer. I invited him here to tell us the story of his life. I am sure we can all learn from him.” Mr. Smith began his story, “I came to this country 50 years ago as a young immigrant from Europe with an unpronounceable name. I got off the ship without a penny. The first thing I did was change my name to Smith. I was hungry and exhausted. I started wandering around looking for a job but to no avail. Fortunately, I found a coin on the sidewalk. I bought an apple. I had two options: eat the apple and quench my hunger or start a business. I sold the apple for 25 cents and bought two apples with the money and I also sold them and continued in business. “When I started accumulating a few dollars, I was able to buy a set of used brushes and shoe polish and started polishing shoes. I didn’t spend a penny on entertainment or clothing. I just bought bread and some cheese to survive. I saved penny by penny and after a while, I bought a new set of shoe brushes and polishes in different shades and expanded my clientele. I lived like a monk and saved penny by penny. After a while, I was able to buy an armchair so my clients could sit comfortably while I shined their shoes, and that brought me more clients. I did not spend a penny on the joys of life. I kept saving every cent. A few years ago, when the previous shoe shiner on the corner decided to retire, I had already saved enough money to buy his shoeshine location at this great place. “Then, six months ago, my sister, who ran a whorehouse in Chicago, passed away and left me 12 million dollars.”
  2. And money, more money... When I signed in this morning, it prompted me to get "verified", I started to, then saw that to be "verified" one must pay $105 a year!
  3. SAG-AFTRA actors strike - apparently one of the beefs I heard was that most of them are living pay cheque to pay cheque and only the top 1% are making money.  Umnnn, isn't that like the same as other industries?  I personally know maybe 2 or 3 people that are NOT living pay cheque to pay cheque.

They should have gone on strike prior to the filming of the Barbie movie.

So they should just accept their sh!tty pay and be grateful for scraps because every other industry is like that? That's a horrible take, and while I'm sure you're not, your wording makes you sound like a simp for capitalism.

No, I'm not saying they should accept it.

  4. On this day in 1969, July 12th, One Hit Wonders Zager and Evans started a six week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'In The Year 2525, (Exordium And Terminus)'. The song was also No.1 in the UK, making them the only one hit wonders ever in both the US and UK singles charts. :)
  5. Saw this on an Argo fan club, an example of how pay for performance can work in professional sports: Chad Kelly signed one of the most bizarre incentive based contracts with the Toronto Argonauts. In 2022 he ended up making a base salary of $67,000 plus $12,000 in housing money. He got an additional $8,500 for being the primary back up for 17 games. For playing 51 percent of the snaps in the final game of the season he got $3333.33. Being on the active roster with Argos winning the division he got $3,400. Winning the East Final was $3,600 and the Grey Cup was $16,000. In total he made $101,833.33 plus $12,000 in housing money in 2022. For 2023 his salary went up to $75,000 plus $12,000 housing. Each time he plays 51 percent of the snaps he collects $3333.33 so after three games he has added $9999.99 to his contract so far. Here is what the rest of his bonuses will be……. $1,500 if he passes for 1,000 yards $3,000 if he passes for 2,000 yards $5,000 if he passes for 3,000 yards $10,000 if he passes for 4,000 yards $15,000 if he passes for 5,000 yards $5,000 if he finishes top-3 in CFL TD passes $5,000 if he finishes top-3 in CFL passing yards. $2,500 if he is named an East Division all-star, a $5,000 bonus if he is named a CFL all-star $15,000 bonus if he is named the league’s Most Outstanding Player One thing Kelly has put above stats that will net him more money is winning. This in a market where the Maple Leafs have 3 players taking up 38% of the teams salary cap, the Blue Jays have a $213 million dollar player payroll, the Raptors pay Pascal Siakam $38 million per season and the TFC’s Lorenzo Insgine and Federico Bernadeschi make 500% more than the rest of the roster combined. They say that sports is a result based business, the Kelly led Argonauts are 3-0 and have looked comfortable in the process. In a city with grossly paid athletes, Chad Kelly is earning every dollar he makes. Toronto Argonaut fans this is your quarterback.
  6. According to this, we are over the cap by almost $2.5 million: https://www.spotrac.com/nhl/cap/

Yeah, I posted the link in the contract talks thread.

  8. That may be true but last I checked, every team has a 1st round pick, which means even more that we won't gain any ground on other teams from this draft. I know, time will tell...
  9. Excuse my pessimism, but it doesn't really matter, whomever they pick will not help us make the playoffs next season. The Canucks are a mediocre team with a mediocre first round pick...
  10. A social experiment highlighting how intolerant and unaccepting some people really are. One need not travel outside this forum to understand that the human race has a long way to go. Course, some could be the result of how the psychology of a crowd is different from the psychology of individuals.
  11. It wasn't a comparison to Pride - you missed the point - go back to school and pay attention this time.
  12. You couldn't pay me enough to watch this years draft.
  13. Gee, now it sounds like you're not being "inclusive" to me - sounds like you are hating like...well, you know the group...
  14. Speaking of false equivalencies...I never said Nazi's were the same as Pride. I was pointing out the hypocrisy of those that say Christians should love everyone, yet they don't do it themselves. No, I will not wear a nazi symbol. I never said I wouldn't wear a Pride symbol. I believe their underlying message. Thanks for missing the point.
  15. I didn't say they were the same. Hate is hate - no matter how it's presented. Inclusive? No. Pride is not, hence why my gay daughter does not like them. We need to all be in middle ground.
  16. LOL I don't have a building expressing my beliefs - I didn't build 1. Are you saying I should give up my beliefs because someone else built a building? Are you going to stop watching hockey because the NHL isn't having cause based warm up jerseys? All lives matter? No. Humanity is not fine. Just about everyone will point out what they think are flaws in others.
