  1. Meh, I would put Hughes third on the list behind Miller and Petey. Maybe I'm misreading him, but I think Hughes is more concerned about his own game than the teams game. Almost obsessively so. He is very defensive against the media if he is criticized for any aspect of his game. I don't see that as leadership ability. I still love him on the team. and most good players would not be where they are without an inflated ego and have to be somewhat selfish, but a captain has to be first and foremost concerned about the team's play more than his own personal gifts or flaws. Also, he just doesn't seem to be a very vocal person. A captain doesn't have to be a yapper, but there may be moments when the team, or even one of your teammates, needs a good tongue lashing. He may grow into the role though. I'm not saying it wouldn't work, just that Miller and Petey already have the leadership qualities it takes to be a captain IMO. And I'd put Miller as my #1 choice. Free up Petey, and Quinn, to play without that pressure. With Miller, it just seems like the natural choice.
  2. Many defencemen develop later. That 's a reality. I think Burroughs fits into that mold. He has taken steps forward since his arrival. I just hope (and I would assume they do) that Tocchet, and upper management recognizes this as well. It would be so stupid to be lucky enough to find such value, for the price, and then just fritter it away. But so far, as Daliwal tweeted, while the Canucks are working to find deals for all the new D they have been bringing in, there has been zero communication with Kyle's agent on a re-signing.
  3. The Canucks have a long and sordid history with incompetence in their medical staff. That or they're easily paid off. I'll choose to be positive and since this is happening at the end of a pointless season, I'll just be happy we have him sit and know he'll be right as rain in fall. He'd better be though with what they paid for him from a stacked draft. I think they overpaid for him, but I will still reserve judgment on him until 10 games or into next season. He will have to play much much better than he's shown so far here. Looks pretty dang average to me. Like any dime a dozen 2-3 million dollar vet floating out there. I'll chalk it up to more ineptitude or corruption in our medical staff, and he was allowed to play for a few games under 100%, in order for JR and PA and Tocchet to get a gander at him now to see how he might fit in for next season. You won't last long as an NHLs teams doctor if you don't play along with dampening risk assessment if you see that your bosses really really really want a certain player back on the ice
  4. I wonder if JR or PA can work their magic and the phones well enough to get another team to take on Myers after July 1st. A straight hockey deal without any conditions. Maybe get back a 5th rounder even. Any new owner knows he only has to pay him a million out of his pocket for one year. Of course his team's cap would still go up by 6, but again, only for one season. Myers is a big boy and that is enough to tempt some I think. If they have the space for one year. (a rookie is on his last year of ELC for instance), then the following season they can probably re-sign him to a very good price. Its not easy finding such a big right shot D. Some GMs may be still mesmerized by his size......like Benning was.
  5. I honestly don't know what Allvin is smoking. His agent should be looking for at least a 2 x 2 for Burroughs and the Canucks should be jumping on it. He is a bargain now at 750,000. He may be a fighter, and hit beast, but he also has soft hands with the puck. He doesn't panic, no chaos. I find it difficult in any game to see him make any glaring mistake. I just think he's a solid hard working tough defender who sees the ice very well. Isn't that all you want for a 3rd pairing D?
  6. Cheech probably has some exotic vacation lined up when the regular season ends to celebrate his retirement. I can only imagine IF the Canucks did manage to pull this off he'd be contractually required I think to work until the Canucks season officially ends. So he'd go from anticipating a nice retirement to calling the Canucks in the playoffs.....all the way to the end, when Pettersson lifts the Cup! I'd actually love to hear the emotion in his exCanucks voice at the end of the winning SCF game, if that happened........ sigh....will it ever?
  7. I honestly don't know why Hughes / Burroughs has not been used more often. BB started using this pairing more often. Burroughs is in the Schenn mold. And like Burrows with the twins, sometimes certain pairings just work, as they compliment each other. Kyle is not quite as tough, but still one of the toughest on the team, but is younger, and a better skater, than Schenn. Defensive minded first and doesn't panic with the puck. I'll say it again, Kyle is the closest to a Tanev we've had since he left. Who was also underrated early on because of his low offensive numbers. And everyone was also missing Tanev + Hughes. I'd be very curious to see how they'd do together for a sustained try. Not for the PP obviously. But think about if it worked 5 x 5, you'd be able to dole out the cap hit to other Ds, or even other Fs.
  8. Post what? Okay I'll ask this one: Our wise AI overlords always know the right thing to answer.
  9. Hey thanks for the suggestion! Never thought of using that.
  10. I will counter with.....actually Kyle Burroughs IS a RHD who is a big(gish), tough, defenseman who can move the puck. He does that very well. In fact I saw BB was playing Kyle with Hughes more and more near the end of his tenure here. That is a trust Kyle had built up with BB. I know, he's not elite, and it would probably show if he had to play a ton of minutes. And maybe I'm just seeing things, but I hope at the very least, Kyle remains here as a full time 5/6 D next season. With all the new blood on D coming in already, I fear he will be overlooked and not re-signed. If for no other reason than hoarding value when we can. We can overpay on some pieces, if we can get away with underpaying other pieces. Burroughs is needed for that especially if Schenn does not return.
  11. I get the frustration from fans. I really do. But other than using the forum to vent against the universe, and this sad club curse we seem to live under in Vancouver, what can we do? We are all exhausted with seeing the team repeat the same plot. Playing crappy when we need the wins, and winning when we need a losses for a high draft pick. I just think picking on other fans for being too happy about winning is misplaced. We know that players and coaches do not tank. For obvious reasons. No need to list them. We know that fans on a message board cannot compel the team to tank. The only way a proper tank can be executed is if ownership wants it firstly. Then having a GM willing to go along with it (because the win loss stats are not going to be great for awhile). That GM purposely sets the team up to fail. Simplified; trading away the veteran productive pieces for draft picks who may or may not, be ready to step into the NHL in a few years. One can direct their anger at ownership and management for not doing this. But even then, just because a rebuild was desperately needed during JB's reign, doesn't mean we need one still. Circumstances have changed. And so I can even understand why management, in its wisdom, has decided not to throw the babies out with the bath water now. (They are starting to walk and throw food around already) So I can't even be mad at them either now. What's a poor angry Canucks fan to do to express their frustration? Who do we blame? Meh.....when you've been a fan as long as I have, you learn to accept this thing called Canuck Luck over the decades. which means the opposite of course. Its a handicap we have to endure that teams like Boston don't seem to have to. There is no one to blame other than the eastern biased Hockey Gods. Its just our lot.
  12. "Don't it always seem to go That you don't know what you got til it's gone You pave paridise Put up a parking lot" JM That's just it. Those who still want a total rebuild. It will be like clear cutting the team, and paving it down to the ground and starting over. But the trees you have now growing you cannot replace them overnight. A few even are as high as the tallest in the NHL forest. Clearcutting it all down so you can plant one super tree sapling in the center and start re-planting around it may just work eventually, in fact it most likely will, but its a case of not seeing the forest for the trees...literally.
  13. Kyle Burroughs RHD (or...LHD when needed!) Born: Langley BC This is one reason. Zero respect here. Saying there are no local born players or RHD when he fulfills BOTH of those, and plays most nights for the team. Yeah...you were probably talking about high priced elite talent, but that's not what you said. For $750,000 cap hit, Burroughs is probably our most bang for the buck player we have...(emphasis on "bang".) I just think, looking at the eye test, and outside of even his fights and hits, which he is a leader of, his simple plays to protect and retrieve the puck, away from the opposition, and get it up the ice to a forward is a beauty to watch. In fact I'll go further...sacrilege to some....He reminds me of Tanev in his first years here. Underappreciated because he focused his game on defence (being a defenceman and all), and didn't put up many points. I find the same with Burroughs. He's so efficient with the puck. And quick to make decisions and get the puck to safety. I just hope management appreciates what he brings. AND hes a lower mainland kid who I'm sure loves to play for his hometown team.
  14. Another useless victory. but a victory none the less! WOOOOOOOOO! Did anyone else think that Boeser was teasing Miller there with the ENG? It looked like he purposely hung onto the puck long enough for Miller to be able to get into position to take the pass. And then Boes fires it home.
  15. I also get why some have been fooled once too often by this frustrating franchise and have zero trust. We have all witnessed it over and over throughout the history of the team, but especially in the previous 8 seasons. We were all played as suckers for much of JBs term. Yet I believed each off season in the changes he made....because I had to. I wanted to be optimistic. You don't have a choice as a fan do you?. Its funny reading posts of those who think we as fans should be helping them lose for a better draft pick. That somehow we can do this but refuse to! And that praising their good play after a game will just encourage them to keep playing well! We are bad machines. lol It really is a shame that Tocchet couldn't have been brought in right away instead of BB. Even though we all loved BruceThereItIs. And he may have served a purpose too. Getting the joy of the game back for a lot of players. Maybe that kind of pond hockey mentality helped Bo concentrate on pure goal scoring, which increased his value to the point where we now have Hronek + Raty. It also may have convinced Kuz to re-sign here playing for a coach that let him free wheel like BB did for him. Maybe the team needed a shot of fun, just to build their offensive confidence back up, after a few stressful years, before the new stricter Tocchet regime came in. Any rate, we fall were we fall in the draft. The main thing is that I have way more faith in this management group in improving the team going into next season, than the last. Just based on the smart moves they've made so far. No more "we ran out of time". They traded Bo 5 weeks before the deadline as soon as they found a decent deal. We now have actual previous NHL experience in management and coaching (including assistants). I think I've seen enough to see that that makes a huge difference. Travis Green was probably right about trying to implement more structure back then, but he just didn't have the NHL experience (or roster to be fair) to develop it. Looking forward to next season! Bush obviously got it wrong. For Canucks fans its.... Fool me once, shame on you(Canucks management). Fool me twice shame on you. Fool me three times, shame on you. Fool me four times, shame on you.........etc. its always shame on, or praise on, the current management. They are the ones paid the big bucks to figure it out. The fans should not be shamed for either having faith in this team and management...even without a top pick this year, or conversely hesitating in believing that THIS TIME it will be different. But either way, we fans are just along for the ride. We choose what attitude we want to bring to the table.
  16. Its true. I even heard on my way to the watering hole I was meeting my brother for the game, on the bus, a few teens were discussing the best way to roll a car. It was probably one of the first riots organized by social media. It was all over if you looked for it. I guess the police didn't bother to look. But I take issue with the idea that it would have happened if they'd won or lost. Perhaps the idiots that were planning to destroy the city for fun would have still done some damage, but I really think that had the Canucks won, the good fans would have overwhelmed and stopped the idiots, half of whom were not even Canucks fans. We went downtown after watching it at a Boston's Pizza, because I naively thought fans would still be out to support the team even if they lost. What I found was thousands of skytrain and bus riders flooding out of town going the other way, dejected about the game, but also fearing what they saw was already started. I contend that IF we had won, all those fans would have stayed downtown, and been in the majority. And the mood would have been generally uplifting and positive. Remember this was only a year from the Olympics and our gold medal in hockey where fans were cheering and high fiving on the street. I know, I was there too. I highly doubt hoards of happy fans would allow a few idiots to ruin it. That's why I'm hopeful looking at the title. I hope they investigate the way it was fomented by mostly non or fairweather Canucks fans, and had nothing to do with real hockey fans in the city.
  17. Yeah I'd let the decision slide until sometime next season. See who rises to the occassion. I think of the three front runners all have pros and cons. Petey is the hardest worker and most elite player we have.....but he still doesn't communicate in English that well, and doesn't look like he enjoys it much either. I think it would hamper his game to have to concentrate on this second responsibility. Quinn is our top D up and comer, speaks well......but I find him a bit self focused on his own game, dare I say arrogant, and may not graduate well to have to speak for the whole team Miller is a consistent player, who is a vocal leader, tough on the ice, and is not afraid to tell the truth and is probably the one best suited to post game interviews....but if the team goes on another long skid, there's a risk his emotional state will show up in a negative way on the ice, and also those emotions may not suite speaking for the team after those kinds of games. Plus, his age. If he starts to decline in a few years, just when Petey and Hughes are right in their career primes, plus Kuz, Podz, Hogz, Rathbone, Raty, he won't have as dominant a position as he does today. But if I had to choose today.....I'd pick Miller.
  18. Yup. I was going to say something similar in regards to Cheech being a similar character as Larschied. An unabashed homer, (a good thing), passionate and a great sense of humour. But an upgrade being a former Canuck player. i too hope they get someone in the same mold. Please not Sat Shaw as someone mentioned. I can hardly listen to 10 minutes of his show. He’s so manic in his delivery. Doesn’t take a breath between sentences. Also I think I’d like to hear another ex player as colour person. To give a perspective of an actual player after a play on the ice. Have a happy retirement Cheech! I’ll put a dollop of ketchup on my Kraft dinner in honour.
  19. WOOOOOOOOO! Welcome to Vancouver Hronek! That must of been a fun night of hockey to watch live. Things are looking up for next season.
  20. It better be 100%! Vancouver has a sketchy history with our medical diagnosis. This season doesn't matter, he doesn't need to be rushed into play
