That's what I was thinking. And if you apply that to the statement I was quoting, it will actually take longer for countries that act fast to get back to normal which will impact sports longer but save more lives.
-
I could totally be misunderstanding things, but I think it's kind of the other way around. For countries that don't do their part, more people will get infected and so the pandemic will burn itself out faster. In countries that do their part, it lasts longer but far fewer people will be impacted. I saw this infographic on the subject:

BIG BUCKS LOST OR DOWN cause of nosportvirus...

Sorry. I'm very tired. I don't know what I was thinking. -
BIG BUCKS LOST OR DOWN cause of nosportvirus...
goalie13 replied to hockeygod77's topic in Canucks Talk
If you recall, after 9/11, when the NYSE re-opened there was panic selling and the market had its biggest single-day losses in history (at the time). However, it didn't take too long for the markets to turn back around and they went on the biggest bull run in history. A market crash like this presents an opportunity. There will be bargains to be had and the market will start to climb back up again. Apparently they are already back up 5% this morning. In the words of Douglas Adams, Don't Panic. -
What will happen to the Nhl season and Playoffs(poll)
goalie13 replied to naslund.is.king's topic in Canucks Talk
I just have this feeling that we're only seeing the beginning of this and it won't fizzle out until it is too late to save the season or the playoffs. The next NHL hockey we will see will be in October. If you have seen my record in the predictions threads lately, this should give you hope that the NHL will be back soon. -
Me too. The one I didn't like was the idea of having a March-madness style single-knockout tournament. I feel like it makes the regular season worthless and cheapens the accomplishment of winning the Cup. Other than maybe a play-in round, I wouldn't want any of the regular rounds to go less than best of 5.

How can they have rules in place on how to handle a mid-season worldwide pandemic with no timeline on when they can return to playing games? Until they actually know when they can play again, they can't make any real decisions on what they are going to do.

I can't imagine how unbearable 24 hour sports radio and TV is about to get with almost zero actual sports to report on.
-
Really? You've been on CDC long enough to hear a lot dumber things than that.

Nobody can provide that answer as the NHL hasn't decided yet what they will do. Even the playoff format itself is up in the air. Here's a good video on Sportsnet about it: https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/nhl-may-need-get-creative-playoffs-play-resumes/

I'm not sure how that would work as the NHL year officially concludes on June 30th, then the new year and free agency starts on July 1st. It's baked into the CBA. It would take some serious cooperation in order to adjust the end of the year. In my opinion, if they can't run the playoffs in a manner that at least resembles the current form of the playoffs, they shouldn't run them at all.

PREDICT THE SCORE CONTEST: Canucks @ Coyotes March 12th 2020
goalie13 replied to goalie13's topic in Canucks Talk
I can't take credit for the original creation of the game. Someone else started this a couple of years ago. Like you, I was looking forward to it starting up again when the season started and when that happened I reached out. When he/she didn't reply I consulted with Vintage and then launched it myself. I think we only missed the first five or six games of the season. I figure that since I work from home I can make this work and keep the game going. I'll be here to do it again next season. Once this year is officially over, I'll probably set up a thread just for feedback. I tried lots of different things for points, questions, etc. and I would love to make this game even better for next year. Heck, I am hoping to even put together prizes for next year too. So stay tuned. -
Agree, except Hughes over Edler. Hughes has 20 more points and 40 fewer PIMs.

Apparently the Athletic has removed its paywall for COVID-19 related articles. I am a subscriber so I don't know if it's true or not. Still, here's an article on what could happen, maybe. https://theathletic.com/1671378/2020/03/12/what-will-the-nhl-season-look-like-if-it-resumes-after-the-coronavirus-shutdown/?source=shared-article

To all PTSC players - Thanks so much for all your participation throughout the season. Obviously, with the season being suspended there will be no games to make predictions on. In the event that the NHL does return this season we will start again with a fresh thread. -

Solid prediction. But as this was not one of the bonus questions no points will be awarded. -
Classy move. The NHL billionaire owners need to consider similar moves.

Nothing is official until @-Vintage Canuck- says it's official.
-
-
Looks like the CHL might be doing the same. No surprise.
-
Also doable. I just picked 72 because it was the first even number that's more than the most games any team has played so far.
-
My guess is that will happen eventually, anyways. They'll suspend for now, but eventually have to just cancel everything as there won't be enough time to get the playoffs completed in time for next season. In my opinion, the worst thing they could do is change how the playoffs are played, just for the sake of having playoffs. I would prefer they cancelled it altogether rather than cheapen the process.
-
Just for the sake of discussion, let's say they can get back to playing in time for the playoffs. I think a good solution would be to re-do the remaining schedule so that all teams finish with 72 games played. It would give the playoff bound teams at least one game to get ready for playoff action and it would give the bubble teams the opportunity to win, or lose their playoff spot.
