  1. Was just scrolling through the Toffoli(poss signing) thread, & folks were discussing contracts for various players, & of course, the 'tenders. Thinking it over this question popped up. Is the timing of all this a blessing? Comparisons are inevitable; for instance, today's tandem vs the Lu & Schneids endless debate. Maybe the knowledge of an oncoming ED is beneficial? Applies to all teams, & this 'deadline' prompts a GM to get his *ss in gear & be decisive. When coupled with the COVID-mayhem, this is when all GM's will have to get out there & work like diligent farmers, as opposed to shady lawyers in discrete rooms. We've got a young team, with many key assets not even requiring protection. We could make a deal or two(of value-heightened youth) to obtain a strong(protection-required piece) that a rival team perhaps can't cover. We came outa' the last ED smellin' like a rose. Not worried about this one either. In fact, the timing might be good for our young cast on the rise.
  2. Of course their ownership issues were quite unlike(fortunately) our own. I was mostly interested to compare their on-ice scenario, with any/all other teams. Maybe I'm getting forgetful, but it's not often you'll see a franchise pawn off that much highly-touted/elite youth, in a fairly short period. What I find most interesting is it could be argued as a possible strategy in today's(cap world & more thorough scouting) NHL parity.
  3. Would imagine the Magical DeLorean doesn't have a rear view mirror, eh? You either go BACK(& fix things up), or keep drivin' down life's Hwy... Something tells me if Greener hopped into the DeLorean, he'd try things a TAD differently :^) just sayin'...
  4. Why thank you. I also dream of a more civilized, peaceful & grander world too(which of course is prob Mighty delusional). But I don't consider it a sin to visualize things that one believes is positive. What neither of us know, is how we would've fared had we used depth, in that Apocalypse Now riverboat-ride of a 5-in-7. I was campaigning fairly hard, at the time. Wish we coulda' found out.
  5. Thorough post & quite reasonable argument. I didn't specify above, but in truth I was thinking more in terms of an overall, organization sense(spanning GM's & decades). Like still getting mileage outa' varied assets like the Kesler, Schneider, & (wayyy back to) the original Linden pick. Feel this is a somewhat stealthy way for a team to potentially maintain competitiveness.
  6. Even as a relatively young man, SC was respected & had involvement & some influence in Russian affairs. He was in attendance at the late 80's Reagan/Gorbachev mtgs/detente.MAN, could this bloke tell tales, & with composed charm & a wicked sense of humour. Will miss his insights, big-time.
  7. Ha! Want him to stay young forever, I guess? Freudian-slip..call it a NMC.(thnx)
  8. Sign him pronto. 3 yrs x around maybe 4-4.2 mill. Next yr's the cheapie at about 1 mill. Lock him in, & bid Jacob the best.
  9. Sad news of the passing of this great intellectual, at 81 yrs. As corrupt MSM fanned the flames of anti-Russian hysteria, this respected, authentic voice of reason warned the western masses of the deteriorating relationship between the 2 nations. I learned a lot regarding geopolitical matters over the past decade(approx), just listening to the Princeton professor, on episodes of the John Batchelor(PRN) show. The mainstream will deflect, and/or minimize such a legend; but many folks will come to understand his magnitude with the passing of time.
  10. With the unprecedented sched, I felt there was a moment here where the coaches had to treat this differently. Come up with a list(say 4-6 names) & simply TELL these guys, you'll all have to sit 1 game. We anticipate this series going deep, & we need to insert fresh legs wherever we can. Maybe it's old-school, but felt it needed to be coaching-assertion, as opposed to (for lack of better term) 'new age' consultations. & did it really matter whether we fell in 5, 6 or 7? You can ponder this in retrospect(knowing what transpired) but I really don't think it did. We went further than any Cdn rival. It literally was facing the rigged league's Casino, with our house rubles. When you're sitting in that chair, it's my opinion you make bold manoeuvres. Should it pay off early, even MORE pressure swings to the favoured side.
  11. Mostly agree, Deb. I'm very proud of all the players. I also think Green's a good young coach. I'm optimistic about their future. Unfortunately I strongly feel he should've taken a different approach(roster) when it was 5-in-7 after two hard-fought series, beforehand. That's just stating(before, during & afterwards) my honest opinion.
  12. Heading out for a lengthy bike & run today..but thank you Old News for the inspiring encouragement :^) Have a fine day Ol' Chappy!
  13. & lastly Oldnews, it's a shame you didn't reply to my original post on this thread(some folks supported the opinion, at the time). We might've had an interesting differing insight, before the last 5 games actually occurred. Cos' it's proactive to discuss lineups beforehand right? Discussion boards are best for discussing ideas(status quo, or diff tack), are they not? So yeah, have a fine day.
  14. Thanks for the reply. As I'd told you a coupla' days back, you need more faith in the depth fwds JB has signed. He has a better eye for talent than most are willing to accept. We needn't attach random numbers for forwards waiting(endlessly, unfortunately) for their never arriving chance.
  15. Seem like red herrings & diversions..but hey, maybe I'm wrong? At any rate, have a nice day. That'll be all on this topic for me. Long as the coaching staff use their depth better, it'll be a val lesson! :^)
  16. Thanks for the reply, & I like Green. But he dropped the ball here. Have a gander at pg1 of that 5-in-7 thread. Some of us dealt him some free advice..whoopsadaisy..it went unheeded! Question: what woulda' happened if some of those 5-in-7's went to lengthy OT's? We woulda had sudden heart conditions at the EDM ICU(cue TG a day later: "Yeah, we decided to insert a new face here...")
  17. This important thread is a reminder that deserves multiple bumps. We very well could have been in the final-4 with bolder decisions. Team would've been tired then..don't know if we'd have advanced further? But what a great thrill THAT would've been! But let's NEVER forget this very important, hard lesson. Depth is so important. When it's 5-in-7, trust your whole crew.
  18. ...but then other times it's prescient forecasting.
  19. Man, what a beautiful thing it'd be if we squeezed 8-10 awesome yrs outa' this kid. With Burr's legendary Canuck-karma, would be mighty apropos to see that fandangled into another decade of a diligent, smart, contributing Swede. It's hard to compare such a wide, diverse aspect amongst all teams.. but I feel Van has done an amazing job of recycling past assets into future talent & hope. Ironic because one of the fav bashings of JB has been not to accumulate enough picks in deals. Yet still it seems we've managed to parlay a fair amount of past capital into contributing(or soon to be), younger assets. More satisfying to me as a fan, when you can trace the lineage of dynamic, arriving youth, to the departure of respected stars of yesteryear. Your latest incarnation of a rebuilt team then has that more organic, authentic vibe. & wonder, does it feel different to arrive this way as a young player?
  20. I spoke of the Nords, cos' obviously that's when the bumper crop was planted. It's hard today understanding how they landed such a windfall for big #88. But that was a new decade, fresh after the utter dominance of Wayne & Mario. So many huge trades are patterned from recency bias. It's also arguable they could have landed better assets for Nolan & Sundin. Whatever the case, it's interesting to look back on a Cdn market that pawned off many shiny new gems, in rather short order.
  21. Imho, people get carried away with obtaining superstars. They fantasize about creating a franchise like the 80's Oil or '92 Pens. As things are set up, this is incredibly difficult(CBA, cap world). Even tougher for Cdn franchises. As things are trending currently, I like what Bergevin has been doing(past coupla' yrs), as a recent example. The shotgun approach in collecting hordes of youth; as well as building a pretty large, imposing blueline. If he has the guts to move Price & Weber when possible, they could transition seamlessly. The '87-'92(approx) Nords were prob best a comparable with OTT(of past few yrs). For any who don't recall, they were MIGHTY bad! They kept their first drafted star, from their eventual, mid 90's juggernauts(Sakic), but then dealt off three consecutive #1 OA prospects. The circumstances were complicated & situational, but I think they established an unconventional team-building approach, that we might be wise to assess, evaluate & possibly learn from. I'd build a team around EP, as those Nords were built around Burnaby Joe. To me, the guy checks all the boxes of what a superstar should be. Would do my utmost to bring Big Nik back into the fold. Would commit to TD between the pipes. It's just a concept that I doubt many here want to discuss. But I prefer to post a current opinion(on the record), as opposed to whining on deals/direction after the fact.. about courses we may have taken. No problem if anyone disagrees, but I enjoy discussion theoretically, on future directions/gambits JB might employ. 1- A team today is better with 1 or 2 superstars, & several high-end players throughout a balanced lineup. Your squad should be LARGE(say, top 20% of teams), fast, abrasive & energetic. Generally, it's far easier for such a model to be cap-kosher. 2- Therefore, don't be shy about dealing away a potential superstar(or two), if it might enable a franchise to shuffle a further 4 or 5 high-performing ELC's into a mix(in subsequent seasons) 3- Such an approach is generally the 'long-game'. You're looking for continual improvement over a (perhaps?) 5-7 yr timeline. 4- Obviously, taking such a path it's imperative a GM would have great faith in his scouting crew. We sure had a significant departure there. Will their impressive slugging % be sustainable? 5- A key part of this strategy is inserting excellent(or even competent) ELC's. I'd guess this is becoming increasingly clearer to GM's with every passing season. It's an advantage(the bang for buck) that should almost always be aimed for. These are just some general observation/opinions on building in the 2020's. Interested if any wanna' chime in on the subject.
  22. How many 10,000,000$ contracts do we see on perennial contenders like TBay or BroonGoons? Why do folks wanna create the Leafs 2.0?
  23. But rather pointless to revise decisions 3 decades in the rear view. If we had this site in 1990, would we be second-guessing managerial gaffes(some orig-6'er) from 1960? Personally I fully accept this team's 50 yr stretch. There's been a lot of fun & laughs. Just four yrs later('94) may well have been the very best(& pleasing moments) run in their history!
  24. You'd be teeing up the wisecracks from Nat commentators for hilites: "Okay, got the Leafs & 'Possoms, & this was one-sided. Only one squad showing any signs of life"...
