  1. For a lil' summer discussion, thought I'd get this thread rolling. As per Capfriendly, we're in a nice cap-scenario(Finally!)..currently sitting about 23rd overall. TO & Winn will pass us soon, with big names they have to sign. So we'll likely sit about 25th(total cap expense, for 2018~19), as the season kicks off. About 10,000,000 $ of open space. Let's all agree that our kids mostly impress, over the coming seasons(to make thread less complicated).Namely: - QH is on par with Dumba, Pietrangelo, Werenski types for success(perhaps a beauty hybrid?) - Brock becomes perrenial 40/80 guy - Jake becomes a 50/60 pt pwf - Olli becomes what a young Edler appeared to once be(ascending, but 5 mill level, let's say) - Petterson hits Brock-level, in terms of skill/numbers - Demko is certifiable, early-Schneids level, first few yrs. Legitimate starter - Gaudette becomes something between Kesler & Kadri(style & pts) All this raises a coupla' questions. At what point will a surging cast of excellent youth pose a cap-crunch issue? A- What season will this problem kick in? b- Anybody have contract $/term strategies that may best avert/delay the inevitable? c - Will we eventually have to entertain trades, to keep recycling in high-level ELC's? d- Lastly, what's the best example of a team that's simultaneously/affordably maintained depth & success? What lessons apply?
  2. Firstly, Lastname's a funny surname. What's Lastname's first name, or nickname? If some no-name with one game, can go first-line, with no face-time, or stat-line?.. Well heck..do we all really need this?
  3. Book ends of excellence! I always look at a 1st rounder, within the context of it's season. For example, if you're lousy(like Flamers), yet still have no bloody pick.. THAT must be a freeken'nightmare! In our case, we got this amazing young talent, yet one could argue Van had a surprisingly promising yr. If we didn't get hit by a slew of injuries, would say they could've been in the WC fight 'til late March, perhaps(?) We had a super start, & a brilliant finish(aforementioned book ends). Going forward, the team has to whittle down this injury-thing(that usually surfaces mid-season). Speed, size, youth, & controlling play will hopefully help in that regard.
  4. Can't remember clearly..didn't Bowman have Housley often playing as a fwd(hybrid type?). Thought this skewed his numbers?
  5. 70's ..BEST Decade for flicks.

    Anyone disagree?

      "1960's Bond Films"

George Lazanby's one stint as Bond has grew on me a little over the years.  A shame he couldn't really act (to be fair it was his first movie role and this was as the lead obviously).  Rest of the movie was solid.  And who can't love Emma Peel as a Bond girl?

"Once Upon a Time in the West. "

I heard Leone at first planned to have Bronson have that initial shootout against THESE shooters...this scene:

Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, and of course Wallach  (heh, the three leads of "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly)!

Doesn't hurt that Claudia Cardinale is stunning in this movie. But Fonda plays an incredible bad guy.

"But Fonda plays an incredible bad guy."

Yeah, a huge surprise given that he was pretty ALWAYS the 'good guy'.  It would be like John Wayne playing a heavy in a Western.

  6. HolyToledo did they pick a beaut! Guy's everywhere in an instant.
  7. Yeah..& then all believing diehards & detractors get into their petty p*$$ing matches, & try to define what is a "real fan"(& all that nonsense). I just threw this together back in Oct..was quite optimistic then with Green, & the way the team appeared trending. When they announced(April?) we were hosting the 2019 draft, I immediately felt we should pivot. Trade decent assets, that are late 20's & 30's accumulating extra '19 picks; fully accepting one more yr of incubator for the youngins. Any surprising success would be house money. ***CAP SPACE*** The important variable that we all seem to give short shrift. We FINALLY have a roster well under the cap. It's so much easier for a GM to time/tweak a rebuild-rate when the books are in order. All these variables make for a wild swing in forecasting. They could probably place anywhere from #18~30th, depending upon the kinds of deals & dimes they want to use. It'll be fun to watch.
  8. Has The Western World... ..Jumped The Shark? ..Lost The Plot? ..Sold Out? ..Become mired/Bogged Down In Trivial Pettiness? Or (e), all of the above? (depends who you ask)
  9. Correction: The 5 Yr Stealth ReDo is 100% done. Now, it's 1 yr of a blatant dive-bomb, as the youngins' gain muscle & experience(mostly elsewhere). A few elder, well-paid samurai(ronin), fighting for honour at the old site. The 5 yrs of ninjas are out. They've accomplished their mission of distraction & disinformation. We've now assembled a younger army, & started construction on a new castle(moat's dug, & rock walls are up). Future looks promising.
  10. Yeah, the 'divide & conquer' approach can create a lot of bad blood. Also keep saying a population "is free & exceptional" while hoovering up every scrap of info. Criminalize whistleblowing, when it doesn't fit the elite's plan, as well. This is all bread & circuses as Rome burns. Not viable, or sustainable.
  11. Feels like TPTB at top of the pyramid want society to be a great number of divided factions, at each other's throats for one reason, or another. This divisiveness has a point & purpose. Entities like MSM just fanning the flames.
  12. Options were never really given. It was all a facade, unfortunately. Society was set up to benefit the richest(especially corporations). Our living standards, on a wider scale, were mostly maintained by bombing brown people for cheap oil. George Carlin rants(from about early 90's, onwards) were a closer depiction of what western societies had been reduced to, than any private citizen might acknowledge, or entitled politician admit . People & society(individual AND group) were far more interesting back in the 70's..which is my own earliest memories. We created a today of all style & no substance.
  13. WHAT are y'all afraid of!!???

Nothing could prepare me for the vertigo effects of the stroke I had. I can think of nothing more terrifying thinking I just had an ear infection. And waking up in the morning expecting to feel better and the world just spinning. I could only drink water, because I couldn't keep anything down. I could not walk, I had to crawl. I had to call an ambulance, clean myself up as best as I could. Prop myself by my apartment buzzer to let the ambulance crew in. (Waiting 90 minutes, while the very nice girl at 911 kept calling me back).

When the crew got to my apartment, I was like a guy who drank 3 bottles of scotch. They had to walk me downstairs to the ambulance, while they took me to VGH. You need to take for granted the simple things like walking, running, etc. As it took me about 2 months to walk normally. 6 Months to jog. I'm am thankful it was a mild stroke and my life is pretty much back to normal. But that's something I never want to have happen again.

  14. At the very least, Ghosts, it created a title-rhyme..for reason? edit: Monty P were the best!
  15. This current crop is better than any prospect group the franchise has ever assembled. That's my opinion..admitting I didn't really start watching until the mid-70's. If you think the late 70's farm was better..it's certainly your right to say as much. But I'm interested(& skeptical) whether any posters here would agree with you.
  16. Well.. you're entitled to any argument/assertion you fancy, but if you prefer to stand on the car lot flogging THAT 70's model, I'll certainly wish you luck. Generally I LOVED that era..some players were bold enough to flip the bird to NHL hierarchy, & start up another league (there's no moxie or chutzpah like that anymore). But for our boys on the left coast, that was the middle of a TWO DECADE losing-tunnel! Next you'll inform us that the 80's Leafers inspired Cdn manners & pastime-diversity(do ANYTHING but watch the game, man!) edit: Also forgot..it's SOOOO misleading to present stats on players drafted late 70's. Scoring in the 80's was insane, compared to coming decades.

Hypercolor jerseys, they skate out wearing green and blue and as they perspire it changes to yellow and black.

  22. Trev moving on to Greener pastures is another sign that the 5 yr stealth-rebuild is fulfilled. The 1 yr kamikaze-descent will be widely accepted(necessary evil)..especially if the Comets play as a powerhouse.

Apparently Hendrix called this guy the best, in a late 60's interview...

  24. Evidence just keeps rolling in. Northern hemisphere appears to be burning up. I've read predictions that the Arctic sea ice may be toast, this Sept, or next. Watch out when that happens.
