[Signing] Flames Sign Josh Leivo
DownUndaCanuck replied to Millerdraft's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I wonder why he signed with Calgary then? More chance of playing? He would have been practically gifted top 6 minutes with Toffoli out and Virtanen as inconsistent as anyone else. Might be more than meets the eye, I think JB has really rubbed a lot of our UFAs the wrong way this offseason. -
[Signing] Sabres re-sign Sam Reinhart

Wonder why just a one year deal, he must really want out of Buffalo but is waiting for the ED. If JB can somehow shed enough cap, next season (or the year after) might be the perfect time to get his man. Consistent 20 goal, 60 point playmaker who can play center, he'll be 25-26 when we might be able to grab him, give him 5x5M to round out our top 6 and replace Pearson. -

Shame, he's a 15 goal, 40 point scorer for under a mil. JB really banking on our kids now, I hope Lind and Hoglander are ready. -
[Signing] Canucks re-sign Jake Virtanen
DownUndaCanuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I do hope Jake performs because we can really use an extra scoring top 6 forward with Toffoli gone. JB decided to take the gamble and go with Gaudette and Virtanen over the guaranteed goal scorer Toffoli. I think it's the right move, but there's always the possibility that the kids don't produce as much as they should. I think there's more leeway for Gaudette (lot cost, late pick, low minutes) but if Virtanen puts in a stinker next season, I think JB should look at trading him before his contract expires to try and get something. Whether it be an Anderson-type trade (2nd rounder) or ideally a trade for another young struggling player who may just need a change in scenery, we can't keep relying on Jake and we need top 6 scoring from somewhere. I'd give the kid 18 months to show us what he's got though and then that's it. I'm quite hopefull that he will do it though, and while he may not be as dynamic as Toffoli and our top line, I think he can produce 20 goals for us. -
[Signing] Devils sign Dmitry Kulikov

For that money I would have taken him for sure, upgrade on our bottom pairing defencemen by a mile. He's played in teams top 4s for most of his career but isn't steady enough, but playing 17 minutes a night would be perfect for him. Good pick up, JB must be looking for someone else. -
[Signing] Canucks re-sign Jake Virtanen
DownUndaCanuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Completely fair deal, to all those fools expecting Jake to want 3+M, he simply doesn't bring enough go the table. That could all change during this contract and I think it will. He's got the tools, now he's got the big opportunity with Toffoli gone. Jake is now going to be expected to score at least 40 goals over the next 2 seasons. -
[Signing] Canucks sign Jayce Hawryluk

I'm hoping JB can move Roussel and his cap can be used to squeeze Leivo in for 1M and JV for 2.75M. As for Ferland, I see him playing 5 mins before getting a concussion again so not counting on him long term. -
This guy's got some big potential to be the next Motte which is why JB signed him. If he doesn't pan out, he goes to Utica. 7 pts in 11 games screams potential. He'll be good competition for the bottom 6, I'm looking forward to see what he brings but think he'll be a staple with Motte and Beagle.
-
Schmidt looks like he'll slot in with Hughes, both are mobile and Nate's the better shutdown guy. I think that leaves Myers with Edler which gives us a pretty decent shutdown 2nd pairing. I wonder if Myers and Edler playing with each other will result in one of them gambling a bit and playing a bit more offensively. If we can get 50+ pts from Hughes, 30-40 from Schmidt and then a combined 50pts from Edler and Myers, I'd be happy. Myers might really get a chance to jump up in the rush playing with a safer, slower Edler.

More realistically, a small trade might work. Eriksson + Rafferty for 3rd round pick. Detroit get a good young defender who could probably play now, we've got lots of young defencemen (Juolevi, Chatfield, Rathbone), all of whom are going to struggle to get a look at once. Take that cap, sign Vatanen or Fantenberg plus Leivo and Virtanen and we're good to go. Pettersson - Miller - Boeser Pearson - Horvat - Leivo Gaudette - Sutter - Virtanen Motte - Beagle - Hawryluk Roussel MacKewan Ferland (assuming injured pretty quickly) Lind/Baertschi etc. Hughes - Schmidt Edler - Myers Juolevi - Vatanen Benn Rathbone Chatfield

I think at this point it costs too much to move LE, otherwise JB would have done so already. Teams are probably asking for a 1st or decent prospect + Eriksson for say a 5th in return. I'd give up a 2nd to clear 6M cap space but not a 1st, even though it could mean signing a decent defenceman. JB knows we're going to need youth in the future as the cheapest way to build from within and two seasons in a row without a 1st can kill that momentum. As for Roussel, his cap is very moveable. I think Roussel + 3rd or 4th for a 6th/future considerations in return would be fair. He'd be a 3rd line winger on some teams still. I'd hold on to Sutter because we don't really have someone to replace him yet and Gaudette is nowhere near good enough defensively yet. After Bo, this team is surprisingly thin at center, and we'll have to replace Sutter and/or Beagle after this season anyway. Baertschi may be a bit cheaper and might be had for a straight 4th or 5th rounder. I'd try and move Roussel to Ottawa and bury Eriksson and Baer in Utica to be honest, or keep LE around for the occasional turn on our 4th line + PK duties. Spend that money on Virtanen's 2.75M, Leivo's 1M and hopefully Fantenberg/UFA's 1M with a bit of cap wiggling.

[Signing] Canucks re-sign Adam Gaudette
DownUndaCanuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Would be nice to lock him up long term at some point but we just don't know how good he's going to be yet. One year deals until he consistently gets some NHL production but I worry if he breaks out this season, we'll struggle to sign all our young guys. Lots of money off the books but if Gaudette hits 20 goals and 50 points we have to pay the kid. -
[Signing] Canucks sign Jayce Hawryluk

Pettersson - Miller - Boeser Pearson - Horvat - Leivo Gaudette - Sutter - Virtanen Motte - Beagle - Hawryluk Eriksson MacKewan Lind Got to think that's what our forward group looks like all healthy. JB clearly has some work to get us there. -
[Signing] Canucks re-sign Adam Gaudette
DownUndaCanuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Think he's going to sneakily hit 15 goals and 40 points this year, he looks like he's on the verge of a breakout and no Toffoli means there's ice team to be had between him, Virtanen and hopefully Leivo. -
[Signing] Canucks sign Jayce Hawryluk
DownUndaCanuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Cheap grinder but he's still young and may not have played his best hockey yet. He had a great little handful of games after the move so let's see if that continues. I think there's a roster spot up for grabs depending on who comes ready to training camp. Most importantly though, this signing means JB is either going to have to move someone or let someone walk. Especially considering the fact that he wants a depth defenceman, you've got to think that a forward is on the way out. Eriksson's clearly immovable and Sutter still rightly holds down the 3C role so I think it's Roussel for a 5th round pick to any poor team that will take him. Then sign Virtanen for 2.5-3M and Leivo for 1M and let them all fight it out in training camp for one top 6 spot and loads of bottom 6 roles. -
[Signing] Penguins sign Cody Ceci
DownUndaCanuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I'd take him for 1M as a 6th defenceman. He's nowhere near good enough for top 4 minutes but this is his role now - big tough bottom pairing defenceman who can play 2nd pairing PK minutes. -
Edmonton and Calgary have gotten better, would be nice to keep praying on San Jose, LA and Anaheim instead of the Canadian teams who are all pretty decent now.
-
1 more depth defenceman, resign our players and we're good to go. Leivo, Virtanen and Gaudette could easily replace Toffoli's lost production. Schmidt is an improvement on an ageing Tanev. Sign Fantenberg, Vatanen/other UFA and Juolevi/other rookies coming in is equal if not an upgrade on Stecher. Holtby is a step back but Demko will be a year better so goaltending may be quite similar. Most importantly, our young core is a year older, wiser and better, so we may well be better than last season. JB just needs to tie up the loose ends which won't be easy. Leivo, Virtanen, Gaudette and a 6th defenceman for 7-8M will be tricky. Even if Virtanen gets 3M, give Leivo and Gaudette matching 1.75M contracts, leaving us around 1-2M for Fantenberg. Vatanen would be nice but will ask for at least 3M.

[Signing] Oilers sign Tyson Barrie
DownUndaCanuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I really doubt JB would be stupid enough to offer 6M but if it was a 1 year deal then he could easily get out of it next year so not a problem. Obviously Schmidt for a 3rd at 6M for a few years is much more worthwhile. Barrie would have literally been a stop gap until JB could have prayed on teams who had vulnerabilities due to the cap and ED. Good luck to Barrie, Edmonton need more from their defence to be fair and Calgary and Edmonton have both upgraded this offseason. -
To be fair, he doesn't bring much else to the table at the moment. He plays 9 minutes, doesn't defend, kill penalties or play physically. Motte does more, deserves more, no way Gaudette right now deserve more than Motte for just points scored.
-
Green has trusted him a lot in the past, he's played loads with Pearson and Horvat and without a true other top 6 forward, that's where he'll be sadly. I do hope Leivo is healthy to play because that's an easy swap. All depends on how the kids come to training camp.
-
Might be the worst pick for a defenceman. Eriksson on the other hand...
-
Certainly not a bad idea but sadly we need him too much and he isn't bad enough, we don't have many decent defensive forwards in the wings anyway. If Leivo is healthy then he may sit but for the most part I hope he starts alongside Sutter as a checking line. Green trusts him defensively, much more than say Virtanen/Gaudette/Roussel and he's often out there in the final minute with Bo defending a lead, so he certainly had a role not many others are trusted with.
