  1. Yes agreed, one strong top-4 PKer should do it. Hughes - Myers Edler- Dman Fanta - Juolevi Benn Rafferty/whoever else wants to try. Injuries are bound to happen which means Fanta/Benn/Juolevi/Rafferty will play 20 mins during stretches which is why we need that defenceman to be pretty solid because he may be our best man at some points in the season. Especially in a condensed year...
  2. Nothing with Marky to be fair but you can't deny we've lost some big quality. As for the defence, I believe we did have a solid defence in terms of players but Green's system exposes them and the goalie. I would just like to see JB either resign our own solid defencemen or replace them with someone else. Right now he has done neither but I do have faith he'll fill the holes, just hopefully not with rookies.
  3. The fact this is taking so long tells me JB is still working on it, if they had closed the door then Toffoli would have been snatched up quickly. 5x5 would be lovely.
  4. To be honest it looks like this is what JB is doing but it's sad because we've just built so much monentum with a great playoffs, you really want to build off that. Horvat and Miller aren't getting any younger but the way JBs playing the cards, it looks like we'll take a regression the next year or two until Edler and Eriksson are off the books, then he'll go hard for players in their prime. It's a difficult decision to make and is going to be sad to see us give up 3-5 goals a night while trying to score them ourselves under Green's run and gun style but it's probably better for the medium-long term that we don't handcuff ourselves again with UFA signings.
  5. I like Vatanen but his defensive ability scares me and isn't that physical. Right now our PK is looking shocking, we need a strong physical defensive defenceman to replace Tanev and I doubt JB is going to spend our last penies on Vatanen. He'd be a nice replacement for Stecher but I doubt he's taking less than 2M.
  6. So far this has been one of the worst off seasons that I can remember and biggest regression. Losing a top-4 defenceman (top-1 PKer), losing a bottom pairing defenceman and losing a top 10 NHL (if not top 5) goaltender. So far none have really been replaced apart from Holtby. While I like the signing, he comes from a sheltered role in Washington into an already porous defence that just got 10 times worse without arguably 2 of its 3 best defenders (excluding Edler of course). I love the idea of replacing from within and drafting well, but are Hoglander or Lind or Gaudette or Virtanen ready to replace Toffoli's 30 goals? Probably. Are Juolevi, Rathbone, Rafferty or Chatfield ready to replace 35-40 hard physical minutes on defence? Quite frankly I don't know. JB is going to throw them out there though, and not with an elite goalie to back them up anymore but with a veteran with shocking numbers in the last 2-3 years and Demko who will hopefully have to shine for us. This is a nervy off season so far, I love the idea of giving the kids the reins but we have to do it gradually. Holtby to pass over to Demko is lovely and the right move, but we need some physicality in our top 4 again because right now we've got Hughes, big softy Myers coming off injury and an old Edler. Don't even know who'll play the 4th role and that's without any injuries heaven forbid. Last year we had great depth with Stecher, Fanta and Benn in the sidelines, this year it could be 3 rookies...
  7. JB needa to put his money where his mouth is and retool this defence, and it's not just by letting our good shutdown guys walk and replacing them with rookies. Replacing Tanev, Stecher and Markstrom with Juolevi, Benn and Holtby is going to see us concede a fair few more goals and up front we're not getting a hell of a lot better. Just one top 4 to replace Tanev will steady the ship a bit though.
  8. Not sure how Vegas is planning to clear cap for Pietrangelo? They've proven MAF is impossible to move but if they could move him and retain 3M then shift a forward out, they could fit him in. Schmidt and Theodore long term at 5M is bargain so don't really want to mess with forwards. As much as I'd love JB to make this big splash, I don't see him doing it.
  9. Would rather have big strong Cup winning Bogo at 1M than Benn at 2M but they basically do the same thing. Fair play to Dubas, he's using this UFA period to address his needs.
  10. JB needa to put his money where his mouth is and retool this defence, and it's not just by letting our good shutdown guys walk and replacing them with rookies. 11. With the OEL trade off and JB letting all our UFAs walk, I'm hoping some big trade is in the works because right now our defence is half rookie and we have a shakier goalie as well. Unless JB makes a big move soon for one top 4 defenceman at the very least, this team is going to be back in that fringe playoff spot at best again.
  12. Markstrom > > Holtby and Tanev > Barrie but you've got to think our young guys will be better, Demko and Hughes will be improved so hopefully the season will be similar to last. That being said we desperately need a top 4 20 minute RD now and sadly Barrie's one of the few left. There's still guys like Kulikov/Hamonic who might be interesting but are going to want similar long term handcuffing deals.
  13. If Pietrangelo will do something like 5 x 7M then JB should start sniffing, he's a Chara-type player who will still produce in his early 30s and really help this young D. Sadly he can probably get more but JB has to be interested...let Tanev walk, sign Pietrangelo and let some UFA/RFAs walk, fill the holes with youth.
  14. 5 years ago he was arguably the best player in the league, since then he's been a consistent 40 pt scorer, but that cap hit hurts these days.
  15. Deal takes him to 35 yo, these UFA deals scare me. Obviously he's a great 60 point pace D man but is getting older and never been solid defensively. Big hole to fill in St Louis.
  16. I'm glad JB stuck to his guns on this, OEL really isn't worth a good young player. Ekblad on the other hand... JB really needs to focus on shoring up this defence and not just with rookies because we don't have a Marky-blanket to protect us anymore.
  17. I'm a bit nervous about his horrible numbers the last 3 years but you JB wanted someone with experience and a cup to mentor the defence and Demko. Looking for a 41-41 split next season but I'm sure Demko will end up just stealing the starting job.
  18. I trust in JB on this one, he must have had some red flags and an NMC or anything over 5.5M were surely two of them. Covid and Seattle sadly really play into this but Holtby is just what we need - save some cap, expose him as a goalie and all about the Demko train, sign a UFA to back him up in 2 years time.
  19. Sickening, that defence isn't going to help him much. Anyone know cap hit and term? Hope it is considerably different to Holtby.
  20. Well deserved, wish there was longer term but can always sort that out later.
  21. My worry with this is we lose 5M, gain 8M, so will have to let Tanev and Toffoli go. That's a top-3 scorer, 20 goal scorer in Virtanen and 3C in Sutter, about 65 goals worth of production. Not sure where we're going to replace that from. For me, if Arizona want that much I don't think it's worth it unless we can somehow keep one of our big UFAs.
  22. What really hurts is having Benn tied up with 2M. To be honest I think JB is happy to walk away from Stecher because of Benn, Green rightly played Stecher over Benn but now when it comes down to numbers it looks like Stecher's the odd man out. I hope they sign him to a similar 2 yr 2M deal as a UFA because his agent is going to accept any less. Yes he was our bottom pairing defenceman, but during the last few seasons he's played some big top-4 minutes, paired well with Edler at times and always seems to lead our team in +/- through big stretches despite playing against some top lines as well. In all honesty he's probably worth 2.5-3M and could get it on the open market so let's hope he's happy to take a 1M pay cut. Lot of money for the individual though and we do have Benn and Fantenberg who can replace him. Unfortunately he's in the tricky spot where he's too good for his role and not bad enough to deserve less.
  23. This is going to be a big trade and I think JB is going to use it to hopefully solve a couple of issues. Sadly if OEL is coming in then Tanev might be left behind, but Toffoli and Tanev out would be a hard one to swallow, especially if this trade includes some scoring forwards. If he's qualified Gaudette and Virtanen then they may well be in his plans and who knows, the pair could really break out next season and support the loss of Toffoli. On D though, OEL is great but not as good a penalty killer as Tanev. In the ideal world, I say we do one of the following: 1 - Virtanen + Lind + Eriksson + 3rd for OEL 2 - Sutter + Lind + 2nd for OEL and hopefully cP retained In either scenario, we could re-sign Marky and Tanev for a combined 11M OEL - Tanev Hughes - Myers Edler - Fanta/Benn Probably best defence in the West there.
  24. Great bottom pairing D man but sadly 2-3M is too much for this in the current climate. We've got 3 x 6M plus defencemen in the coming years which really means the bottom 3 have to be dirt cheap.
