I think it'll all come down to how many points they produce this coming season. If Petey is over a PPG he deservez something like 7 yrs 8-9M If Hughes is over 50pts he'll get 7 yrs 6-7M Can't forget these kids don't kill penalties or play physically. I think an Aho-like deal is worthwhile but 5 years might leave us vulnerable when Petey's in his prime and faces the UFA , wanna lock these guys up into their late 20s at least.

I get it, but OEL is not elite. He is a consistent 20+, 40 point defenceman. We can find one in the UFA and probably sign them for 5M. If Arizona go asking for anything more than Virtanen then I hope JB puts the phone down. It's a fine line between weighing up cap hits and talent, so JB has to be careful here because this is a trade that tows that line and just because it can be done doesn't mean it should be.

This potential deal makes me nervous, it's big contract money for an ageing defenceman. JB better not handcuff this team again cap wise, and better only make a deal if it benefits us financially. To do that, we have to somehow end up with less of a cap hit. One way I can see that is by trading Virtanen, Stecher and Eriksson (around 10M) for OEL, but even then I'd want Arizona to retain some cap, ideally 2M in the later years. 6M when he's 33-35 is going to hurt this team. If they don't I'd rather just keep Loui and let his contract run its course. OEL at 5M is deal-able but even that will hurt us years down the line and JB is just going to have to move a big contract later again. The difference of course is that OEL can produce for us and play quality 20 minutes of hockey whereas Eriksson can't really contribute. If Arizona does the deal they get a top-6 winger in Virtanen who may explode next year (literally a Grabner replacement) and Stecher who can play 15 minutes of solid defence. Eriksson fills in their bottom 6 so 1 player + cap gives them 3 big roster players. Meanwhile it alleviates our cap problem (we go down 5M and can fit Marky and maybe Tanev back in) and get a top-4 defenceman out of it to upgrade Stecher. Edler - Tanev Hughes - Myers OEL - Fanta/Benn That's essentially 3 x top pairings.
-
That contract would kill us so would only do the trade if Loui was involved. 8M for a 29 yo ageing 40pt defenceman is a bit much when guys like Krug and Peitrangelo will be going for the same amount. Also 8M in 3-5 years time is just going to hurt this team more. I think OEL can play 20 minutes for another 3 or 4 years but after that we end up with another burden.

McAvoy is basically untouchable unless we give up Boeser ++, but Carlo might be had for Virtanen plus a pick or prospect. For fun's sake, I'd do this trade any day: Boeser + Virtanen + Juolevi + Stechers rights thrown in + 2021 1st for McAvoy + Carlo Hughes - Carlo Myers - McAvoy Our top-4 set for the next 5 years at least.
-
Tanev plays a hard 20 minutes a night, shutting down top lines, making his linemate better and our top PKer. We don't have anyone in our system who can replace that, especially with Edler getting older and you're laughing if you think Rathbone, Juolevi or Rafferty are ready for that job. It would be nice to have Myers play that role but he's nowhere near as solid defensively. If JB lets Tanev walk you better hope he's bringing someone else in of similar quality or better. IMO the most important and underrated job on a team, Dallas has a team full of Tanevs plus two puck movers and that's how they've shut down two solid offences. The only situation I'd be happy to lose Tanev is if JB somehow nabs us Ekblad. Just about every other option is a downgrade.
-
Sadly it's more than just cap and Eriksson, a sweetner or retained cap means we get more of a chance of keeping Tanev and Marky. I hope JB sees the bigger picture but he might be looking more long-term (eg. When Tanev and Marky are too old anyway). I would try and trade Loui with 2M retained, that frees up 4M that we can put towards either Markstrom or Tanev. 2M for the Loui mistake for 2 years isn't bad and much better than 6m.

[Rumour] Holtby has Vancouver on his list.
DownUndaCanuck replied to MoneypuckOverlord's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
A Holtby for Marky swap seems negligible, I'd rather keep Markstrom unless the difference is more than 2M which I doubt. -
He's on a nice cap hit of 7.5M for another 4 or 5 years which takes him to his late 20s where he'll have a Peitrangelo-like problem. Based on what JB saw I think he thinks our window is now so I wouldn't be surprised if he really goes for Ekblad. To make it work numbers-wise we'd have to move Boeser out (5M) and most likely a young D-man (Juolevi or Rafferty) and probably a 3rd line forward (Virtanen, Roussel, Sutter?). Best case for Vancouver would be Boeser + Juolevi + Roussel. Re-sign Tanev. Edler - Ekblad Hughes - Myers Fantenberg - Tanev Best D in the West for sure. Similar to the Stars defence with two strong puck movers and a bunch of solid defensive defencemen.
-
Ekblad would be a big ballsy move by JB but it would cost us. He's 24, yet to play his best hockey and was scoring at a 50 point pace last season. We'd have to give up Boeser + Juolevi for Ekblad but to be honest I'd do that. We'd probably let Tanev walk in that case but having Ekblad to replace Edler in the future would really solidify our blueline. Ekblad and Hughes gives us the best future top-4 in the league no matter who you pair them with (most likely Myers and someone else).

[Signing] Wild re-sign Jonas Brodin
DownUndaCanuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Way overpayment, Brodin got term as well, should have been 4.5M max. An often-injured, never hit 30 point mark but very solid 27 year old 20+ minute defencemam. 6M is crazy and is going to hurt the team when he's over 30. Let's hope JB doesn't use this as a benchmark for Tanev and hope we get Tanny for 4-4.5M. -
If JB can somehow haggle down Toffoli to 4.5M and get Marky signed for 4.8M, I'd be happy with that. He's just got to be careful with the NTCs/NMCs, not just because of the expansion draft, but who knows how Toffoli's going to get on over the next few years. Yes, he's been a dynamic scorer but has only really topped 30 goals once in his career and still has a lot to prove which we all forget. Getting them both done under 10M would be all we can really ask for.
-
I think I mean he's more a "fun guy" in the locker-room rather than a decent role character player. I think he's quite liked by the young guys but agreed, it really hasn't translated to leadership qualities at all sadly. I always wanted Nylander over Virtanen from day dot, and wonder how it would have changed this team. We would have had a point-per-game scorer but it would have influenced a lot of later picks and moves. For example, we would have taken Tkachuk instead of Juolevi (for toughness), and instead of trading for J.T Miller or signing Toffoli, probably would have traded for a top young defenceman instead to fill that void. Having Tkachuk, Nylander and Pettersson on the same team would have been something to watch. We probably would have still tried to find Miller to secure the top line center role, but never gone out for Toffoli.
-
Agreed, it does help having two top-4 units who are basically the same. Obviously Heiskanen is the equivalent to our Hughes (if not arguably better offensively and defensively) but we do lack someone like Klingberg. That's where someone like Rafferty or Juolevi could really impact this defence, but we don't want to get too carried away with offence. Edler and Myers have really taken a step back offensively and skating-wise, but it'd be nice to throw one of the kids up in the mix if they can handle 20 minutes in a year or two's time.
-
What I would like to see: Pettersson - Miller - Boeser Pearson - Horvat - Toffoli Virtanen - Sutter - Gaudette Motte - Beagle - Leivo (Eriksson and Roussel out, have NTCs though) Edler - Tanev Hughes - Myers Fantenberg - Stecher Juolevi - Rafferty (Benn out) Markstrom-Demko 40-40 split Don't ask me how, but that's the ideal situation of course. What I think we'll see for opening night: Pettersson - Miller - Toffoli Pearson - Horvat - Boeser Roussel - Sutter - Leivo Motte - Beagle - Eriksson Gaudette Edler - Tanev Hughes - Myers Fantenberg - Juolevi Markstrom and Demko Virt/Stecher/Benn the casualties here to free up 6M
-
To be fair Motte deserves 2-3M but hopefully if JB gives the kid 4-5 years we can get it done for 1.5-1.75M which is dirt-cheap for what he brings. Wouldn't be surprised if he breaks out at some point over the next few years Hansen-style, plays in our top-6 at times and scores some clutch goals.
-
2M is a lot to pay someone on the bench most nights. I think with Fantenberg out-playing him, JB has a decision to make with Benn. He's only got a year left but could be traded for a late pick, especially if we can sneak Juolevi and/or Rafferty into our top-6 for the same price. His physicality is something we really lack though (although Fanta played brilliantly physically) and would be nice to have for the big matchups during the season. Tricky one for JB, I wonder if he's going to try and get rid of one of Stecher/Benn, or both. That depth on defence is going to be what decides the next season with so many likely back-to-backs though. Whatever he does, he loses some quality.
-
I think with the likelihood of Stecher getting shipped out, Juolevi better stay with the team because he might find himself as our 6th defenceman or at least on a rotating with Benn which would be great for him. Just keep the kid around the team - he's got to make a jump in at some point. To be fair, Rafferty probably deserves a shot more than Juolevi but with such potential and such a high pick we have to try and get Juolevi consistently into the NHL, and now's his chance. Condensed season, lots of back-to-backs, it'll be good to rotate the defencemen and almost have Team 1 and Team 2 so to speak, which is where depth on defence is vital. Teams do it with goalies but if there's going to be these ridiculous 5-games-in-7-nights then I think we'll need to have the odd game to rest guys like Edler/Myers or they'll just crumble. Get Juolevi and Rafferty in there alternating in the bottom-2 with Benn and Fantenberg.
-
I think with some changes up front, Lind is going to be one of the first forwards to get a call-up next season. It'll be a compressed season so we'll need more bodies and injuries will surely rack up, plus we're not sure if JB is going to try and move out some forward contracts for cheaper fill-ins like Lind. I do hope he starts well defensively, surprisingly had the most PIMs on the Utica team but if he can throw his big frame around and come to training camp a bit more filled-out, he might get a callup ahead of someone like Bailey.
-
Hoping for Hoglander that he can play next season in the AHL but not sure? One or two years there before moving to the NHL would be ideal to get the physicality up because he's going to come in the same way Gaudette did - try and play well defensively on the 4th line then slowly move up. Luckily we have guys ahead of him but with his skill level he might be one of those guys who just surprises everyone. Most importantly is his defensive and physical game (big reason Pettersson is just tearing it up and didn't take long to adjust).
