[PGT] Calgary Flames at Vancouver Canucks | Feb. 08, 2020
DownUndaCanuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
This team needs a big mix up. Boeser out a while and Petey should sit until he's healthy. Miller - Horvat - Baertschi Pearson - Gaudette - Goldobin Virtanen - Sutter - Bailey Roussel - Beagle - Eriksson Let's go nuts see what happens but one way or another this team needs change. -
[PGT] Calgary Flames at Vancouver Canucks | Feb. 08, 2020

Flames wanted this one badly, they had been ripped by their coach and they came out ready to play hard, we did not sadly. That was a playoff-hungry team and we aren't playing well against hungry teams which is a shame. Top line was useless, Miller had some nice plays and got to feel for Petey but he was targetted all night long and still showed some skill. I think we need to rest him a couple of games. Boeser had a couple of good looks but again, he goes down and our top line is a mess. Throw Horvat, Miller and Baertschi together and see what happens. Horvat was possessed tonight but tried to do too much by himself and really didn't use his linemates well, but you can't blame him when one of them is Loui Eriksson. The man needs a playmaker on his line to set him up, who Pearson is not. Pearson had a solid game in himself but again, if he's not being teed up to shoot, he's not very useful. Eriksson, apart from the screen on the 1st goal, was useless. Gaudette obviously had a good game, lots of jump in his step, and Sutter played alright but I thought Virtanen killed the play several times. Think we need to tinker with our lines a lot in the coming days but would be nice to see some Utica freshness. 4th line was terrible, Roussel was victimized a lot defensively tonight but props to him for providing the only grit of the team. Defensively we were in shambles, couldn't make clean passes, constantly having trouble moving the puck out of our own zone and moving towards one guy when the rush is going against us. These all cost us goals in this game and embarassing ones that good defences don't give up. I thought Benn and Hughes were really strong and Marky of course, but as a 5-man unit we have a lot of work to do. Moving the puck cleanly out of our own zone against a forecheck has been the down-fall of this team all season long and might be the single reason we don't make the playoffs if Green doesn't rectify it. Green has a LOT of work to do in the coming days, especially with Petersson and Boeser injuries. The season will be decided in the next 10 games. -
Green needs to do something special with this team. Our passes have been off all game, no net front presence, simple one shot and out offence and our defending is a joke, all our defenders getting sucked towards one side of the ice leaving far too many Flames wide open. This has been one of the worst signs of pressure cracking the Canucks team slowly over the course of the game and it's disappointing to see because it was a win-able game. The Flames adapted and got stronger as the game went on but we really let them.

[Proposal] ANA - VAN Trade Deadline
DownUndaCanuck replied to Junkyard Dog's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Rakell would be lovely alongside Bo and Pearson but I think we'd need to give up Gaudette and a pick for him. Gaudette and 2nd for Rakell would be interesting though. -
Gaudette has the potential to be the next Grabner-type trade away. He's got far too much potential, started the season a lock AHLer, ended up a lock on our 3rd line and I wouldn't be surprised if his skill gets him knocking on our top-6 next season. Would only move Gaudette if it was for a solid young D man like Ristolainen or Montour...

(Proposal) Van - NJD

The only way we're getting Hughes is with Boeser + Juolevi which, to be fair, I'd do in a heart beat. -
Hope Bailey draws into this one and gets a chance, I think Benn on the back end will give us some much needed toughness. Every game from here on is important but especially this one, at home against a division rival after a 3 game losing streak. Need to get up for this one, I hope our leadership team really stress the importance of this game 3-1 Canucks

Got to win to avoid a 3 game slump and get them feeling good about themselves before the big upcoming games. 6-4 Canucks -

If Eriksson doesn't have a good 1st period swap him with Virtanen to boost Horvat and Boeser on the top line. A lot of the players weren't in the SCF but this is a big chance to prove ourselves against a top team who are hard to beat at home. We've beat the Blues nicely, done well against Washington, now this game is a big chance to prove to the league that we belong in contention conversation. Winning this game would take us to the top group. 5-3 Canucks -
If we can get back in the winning column, this will be a Blues-like run to be honest. After a horrible losing streak we've put together two nice winning streaks and can keep the point streak going on this road trip. Hope they rest, recover and come out strong against Boston. Minnesota will be a rough but hopefully easier game.

I'd be weary adding him to this team so late in the season but next year if he wants to join he's welcome to try at training camp, but you have to think Green's going to give Juolevi/Rafferty a decent look-in. If we do run into injury problems he'd certainly be welcome as a 5th-6th defenceman who can slot straight into a 20 minute role comfortably.

How long until Markstrom has proven himself?
DownUndaCanuck replied to The_Rocket's topic in Canucks Talk
This team does not play a sound defensive game under Green and even though we have good defencemen, we do give up a lot of turnovers. Sure, less so in the last little while than before, but we're still getting shelled by shots and Marky is having to work hard. A lot of the "best" goalies in the league right now are playing behind solid defensive, relatively safe coaching tactics whereas Marky is exposed a lot and has to bail his team out. He's easily a top-10 goalie in the league and his numbers don't do him justice. -
I thought Eriksson made some good defensive plays against the Isles but killed each offensive rush stone dead with his slow footwork or terrible passes. We know what we're getting with Loui. I'd like to see Green put a more skilled player like even Virtanen on the 2nd line at parts of the game and near the end of the 3rd if we're hanging on for dear life, throw Eriksson out there with Bo. I'm all for the defence he brings, but you can't have a 2nd line just defend and miss scoring opportunities all game.
-
Say what you want about trading Sutter but he is a staple on our 3rd line. I wonder what our records like with and without him because he brings so much, and will be key in the playoffs in the matchup game where other 3rd lines have to try and score and defend a trio of Sutter, Gaudette and possibly even Virtanen/Ferland. That Schaller goal was a beautiful rush by Sutter too, he's still got great offensive IQ.
-
At the moment looks like we're giving up the 23rd-ish overall pick for Miller. Absolute bargain. Hopefully we continue to climb and make that pick even worse.

Obviously one of the best pure goal scorers in the league, especially given the era, but he won't come close to Gretzky. We'll never know how he would have done playing in that era but no one has come close to what WG did yet and it'll be a while before anyone does, when you consider consistency and points compared to the league average. There's a reason 99 was retired leage-wide and not many other numbers will be. Ovi and Crosby have obviously been consistent, but never scored that much higher than the league average. Even what McDavid is doing now isn't close to Gretzky's prime days.

Better believe it. We shouldn't be satisfied until we have playoff success, a 14-3 run is cute but when it comes down to it, late in the game in the playoffs, we need to be able to hold on to leads and push. Blowing another 3-1 lead is pathetic. Doesn't matter how you look at it, we've blown leads all year long. You could argue that the modern day NHL allows for more goals and comebacks, but if we play like this with a lead in the playoffs we're going to get spanked the way Tampa and Florida destroyed us. So to answer your question no, we shouldn't be satisfied with regular season success. Yes, this season's goal was to make the playoffs but looking at how weak and tight the Pacific is, why stop at there?

[GDT] Nucks @ Canes - Feb 02 2020 - 11am Pacific - SNET

Carolina will be a much tougher test than the slumping Islanders, especially at home at the end of a road trip and back to back. This will be as tough a game as we'll get so we need our goaltending and PP to come up big if we're to win this. The boys are playing with confidence though so hopefully we can weather the storm early and sneak out another road win. 3-2 Canucks -
As much of a Hughes fan as I am, we have to remember that Makar has played 10 less games. There's an argument to say that Makar is playing with more skilled forwards, but he doesn't get a lot of cheap points, they're mostly well earned. Hughes is ramping his play up of late though so will probably be a photo finish for the Calder.
