2 trades / 4 signings (Proposals)
DownUndaCanuck replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I like the thinking and have been a big fan of getting some of these UFA defencemen but we should be a bit cautious - this is how we ended up with the Myers mess. I've been a big fan of Gavrikov, Graves and Mayfield and any of them would fix our main defensive issue - size, grit and toughness - to varying degrees. Realistically I doubt we sign two of the top UFA defencemen in one off-season but it'd be nice. More realistically, we make a trade for one and sign one. I wonder...Dubas and Pittsburgh must be open for business and there were talks around Marcus Pettersson being traded. Not sure why, he's a young stud for them and they don't have much depth on defence, especially with Letang's injury, but let's play: 1) Boeser + Rathbone for Marcus Pettersson Pittsburgh get their guy. I don't want to trade Brock but Petey 3.0 is a young, 26 year old left-handed solid defensive defenceman who can skate well with good size. We've got Hughes and Hronek around 24-25 years old, Petey fits that mould and gives us a solid young top-3. 2) Sign Mayfield 4M contract Probably will get overpaid but he's one big, mean shutdown RD. Watching the playoffs right now, you need a strong top-4 with size, grit and puck moving ability, and Mayfield rounds it out nicely. He wants to stay an Islander though, got to make him an offer he can't refuse. He could easily be overpaid and not look very good in a non-Islanders team but Tocchet's style is quite similar and he can't go wrong playing with Hughes. 30 years old now, he's got a few more good years in him. 3) Trade Myers as you suggested with a Beauvillier trade, I'm all about that. 4) We still need a 3C - UFA is probably easiest, there are cheap guys like Kampf, Sundqvist, Suter etc. I'd go for a guy like Kampf and give him a shot at the 3rd line duties, he's a pretty defensive-minded guy. We don't want another Dickinson fiasco though. Should be quite cheap. Mikheyev - Pettersson - Kuzmenko PDG - Miller - Podkolzin Garland - Kampf - Hoglander Joshua - Aman - Studnicka Raty Hughes - Mayfield Pettersson - Hronek OEL - Burroughs Hirose Big difference is we lose two good wingers, gain a defensive 3C but most importantly, get two of the better defensive defencemen in the league. Little sting comes out of our offence, the trade-off being a solid defence, IMO the best in the Western Conference. When you look at the final 4 playoff teams, they all had one thing in common - star forwards up front, depth scorers but most importantly and most commonly - a solid top-4 defence with at least 1 good puck mover and 3 solid defensive guys. Pettersson and Hronek are both good two-way guys in any case. If OEL has a resurgence he could be one of the league's best bottom pairing guys. I take that trade of wingers for defence any day of the week and we should focus on changing the structure of our team. Most importantly, we have Podkolzin and Hoglander sitting in the wings who can easily chip in offence so there's not too much of a drop off. I'd ideally keep Brock and trade Garland but if you want quality like a top-4 defenceman, you have to give up a young top-6 scorer. -
(Proposal) - Boeser for Pageau
DownUndaCanuck replied to bh90's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I'd be reluctant giving up Boeser for him, Pageau is only going to get slower and worse. Pretty low production, very solid defensively and on the PK and great at faceoffs though, a real intangibles kind of guy which is what we need, but Brock is worth a lot more. Garland for Pageau straight up seems a bit more fair, pretty lateral trade in cap and production, maybe we add a 4th or later pick for Pageau's defensive ability but Garland brings some value back in youth and forechecking ability so it's pretty close. He's not the best 3C target in the world but he's pretty good to be honest and would fit Rick's style of play well -
Trevor Linden speaks on Canucks captaincy and life after hockey
DownUndaCanuck replied to Canuck You's topic in Canucks Talk
Not sure why this is a conversation. McLean is in the BC Hockey Hall of Fame. Luongo is in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Comparing the playoff runs is quite tricky. I'd argue McLean had a fantasy-driven team in front of him, Luongo had a battered team in front of him by the time the Bruins series came around. Honestly it reminded me a lot of the Canucks most recent playoff series (was a couple of years ago now...) against Vegas. We blew our lid in the playoff bubble, got extremely jacked up, and just didn't have enough offence in the tank for Vegas. Demko somehow stands on his head and gets us to a game 7 and they win by one goal somehow and we never looked like scoring, we were just gassed. The same goes for the 2011 team, they had been on such an emotional run starting with Chicago in 7, Kesler carried us against Nashville, our PP and the Sedins make light work of a prime SJS team, we take a 2-0 series lead against Boston and honestly after that we just lost all the juice. You can blame Luongo for the bad road losses where we scored a couple of goals but on home ice, the team just disappeared in front of him - couple of clutch goals but 3rd and 4th liners but he had little to no help. The game 7 was obviously a real shame, anything could have happened, but without Lu that's a 4 or 5 game series loss. I think Canucks fans really loved McLean and hyped him up a lot but in the grand scheme of the NHL he was far from a world-class goalie, whereas Luongo was. -
Trevor Linden speaks on Canucks captaincy and life after hockey
DownUndaCanuck replied to Canuck You's topic in Canucks Talk
Looking back at Linden's stats, he had a nice streak of 30 goal seasons in his prime but was only really a 70 point player then, his best was 80 points. I know in the later part of his career scoring in general was down but he was never a massive force on the ice. He did play with heart and soul and was a pretty big guy on the ice, but boy did he come alive in the playoffs. He was pretty much PPG in the playoffs his whole career and scored some massive goals. Offence-wise he was always a tier down from say the Sedins and Naslund (funny to see Naslund finished his career with just 2 points more than Linden though), he's more on the comparable list with guys like Burrows and Kesler but it's a sliding scale. Probably one of my top-5 Canucks (along with the Sedins and Luongo) and of course he's over-rated amongst Canucks for good reason. To be really controversial, have a look at his 1988 draft where he was taken 2nd overall. Modano goes first, a bunch of busts after Linden but then look at who we could have drafted - Roenick, Brind'Amour and Selanne. I'd take Teemu over Trevor any day. -
Good move by Pittsburgh, Dubas is savvy and can make trades out of nothing - just what this desperate Pittsburgh team need. They just missed out on the playoffs and really should have been better constructed, if they had Dubas at the TDL they could have had a guy like O'Reilly at 3C instead of that dreadful Granlund trade. Pittsburgh surprisingly have a lot of flexibility this off-season, I think Dubas will do well. The NHL knows a good GM when they see one, there's a reason guys like Mike Gillis and JB didn't get a job straight after they were fired - everyone knows they sucked. Dubas on the other hand didn't really do anything wrong, he just clashed with the Shanaplan and got released. The fact he gets a job mere days later just shows how the league view him - pretty decent GM.

I wonder, does Petey get us 3OA + Peeke straight up? Carlsson looked good playing with men, he might not be that far off top-6 NHL production. I'm assuming he plays 4th line minutes next year in the NHL straight away, probably ends up scoring a good 30-40 points and then could easily hit a PPG in the year after that, or after that. Can Miller carry the reins as top line center in the meanwhile? Peeke certainly isn't that good but it'd be nice to have a partner for Hughes. In the short-term we're dreadful but in even 2-3 years time, we could have Leo Carlsson as a big, strong two-way likely 80-90 point center and big physical top pairing RD Peeke alongside Hughes who will only be 26 years old, and we build around him as our captain. Retool slows down a couple of years but that's not a huge rebuild really. I think CBJ probably have to add seeing how good Petey currently is, maybe throw in their 2nd round pick. It's pretty high so I say we take another defenceman - a guy like Willander, Strbak or Lindstein if they're available. These guys will all surely be a while off the NHL but could easily be future top-4 guys In that time, we lose the dreadful contracts on the roster and who knows...maybe an OEL buyout is a bit less sour then too... In as little as a couple of seasons time: Mikheyev - Carlsson - Kuzmenko Podkolzin - Miller - Boeser Hoglander - Raty - Beauvillier 4th line will probably change a lot Hughes - Peeke UFA (or Hirose if he does well) - Hronek OEL? - Willander

[Signing] Canucks re-sign Jett Woo
DownUndaCanuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Yup, really depends on what management decide, also not to forget Dermott who can play the right side quite well when he (was) healthy. Forgot about Filip Johansson too, former first rounder from Minny, a year older than Woo and he looked good in the few games he played. I'd peg Johansson a smidge above Woo as well. I really hope we keep Burroughs, he played out of his socks for us last year, only guy on our defence playing with any grit or heart and we need a boat-load more of that. I'd be more than happy getting rid of Bear. Assuming McWard is too fresh and they'll let him cook in the AHL, but I think you're right - I think they'll stupidly re-sign Bear, let Dermott go and hopefully keep Burroughs to make us line up like this: Hughes - Bear OEL - Hronek Hirose - Myers Burroughs Rathbone Wolanin - Johansson Brisebois - Woo Kalynuk - Guittari McWard Very good AHL defence though! -
[Discussion] Any possibility?
DownUndaCanuck replied to Mikebeezy's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Good target, good partner but hard to say what Winnipeg are going to do this off-season. Their D is pretty solid up top, they need to sign a lot of guys and could use a change in their bottom-6. We do have a bunch of wingers of course. Lowry for Beauvillier straight up would be interesting. Beau is younger, scores a bit more, Lowry is older, bigger, a center and around 50% guy on the faceoff dot. I think it's win-win. Cap-wise almost a wash as well. If they want I'd happily give them Garland but think we'd have to retain or give them a 3rd or 4th alongside him, which I'd consider for sure. Third line of Beau/Garland (whichever we keep) - Lowry - Hoglander would be a great solid forechecking unit which would work well for Tocchet. -
[proposal] nuclear option
DownUndaCanuck replied to Angry Goose's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
If we want to go full-rebuild then yes, you do it, but if that were the case, we should have sold Miller and Bo for appropriate prices. We could have started the biggest rebuild this league has ever seen. Chicago are doing a stellar job of it but we could have easily competed with them. Bo got us a 1st, Raty and Beauvillier. Miller could have gotten us a similar haul last year, this year he could have gotten us two firsts from Pittsburgh and maybe a prospect. Petey could easily land us a top-3 pick in this draft and probably a prospect as well for insurance, Johnson is pretty decent but maybe someone like that. Imagine what Hughes could snag us, probably a similar deal of a top pick + A-grade prospect. Teams like NJD, Detroit, maybe even Arizona would be hungry for him. Demko might not get us as big a haul but surely you're looking at a first and A-grade prospect. The haul from trading all those guys alone is something rediculous like 6-7 first round picks, around 2-3 A-grade prospects and a couple of decent young players. Then we take on team's bad contracts for 1sts and 2nds, eat them right up. Suddenly you have a ridiculous number of top picks in a deep draft and a bad team which will tank hard for a couple of years. If we really wanted to do this, we should have tanked at the start of last year to set us up for a higher pick this year. Obviously this hasn't happened and we're gunning for the playoffs like a desperate team. It wouldn't have been palatable and of course, tanking and selling top players is no guarantee, but if you're ever going to do it, now is the time. Chicago have timed their two tanks to perfection so watch them create another power-house. Buffalo and NJD's tanks were pretty decent. Arizona have made a mess of theirs. -
[Signing] Canucks re-sign Jett Woo
DownUndaCanuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Right now our RD depth is: 1) Hronek 2) Myers 3) Bear if he's re-signed 4) Burroughs 5) Juulsen 6) Woo 7) McWard So yeah I don't see him playing any NHL games any time soon... -
With all the chat about ASP being too small/light for the NHL, I get that, but look at Quinn Hughes amongst others. The only issue is, we already have a Hughes. We need some grit and size in our defence big time. Hronek is a two-way guy, OEL and Myers will hopefully be moving on, we have no one in the pipeline who plays tough D. Reinbacher is therefore super tempting but if he's gone, I wouldn't mind looking towards Willander or even Lindstein. 11OA seems way too high for them but they play solid defensive-first defence. Simashev is the other option as a real physical beast. I'd never want to draft purely size though. For me this draft is all about Reinbacher vs ASP and either is a good option.

[Signing] Canucks re-sign Jett Woo
DownUndaCanuck replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Sadly I don't see him cracking the NHL roster with this team any time soon/ever. There are just so many better options ahead of him. He's on Juulsen's level and even then Juulsen looked good in the brief NHL games he played whereas Woo has barely gotten a chance. Big training camp and pre-season coming up for Jett but I doubt he steals minutes from guys like Burroughs, Hirose, Rathbone, Juulsen and Wolanin. -
Don't think he did a terrible job in Calgary when he had his hand forced by two baby superstars, and somehow finds a way to snag two more. His coach let him down and he got canned for it, even though they got rid of Sutter in the end. He'll have a much harder job in Toronto though but don't think he'll be scared to move some of the big core unit around. They probably just need a 1-for-1 Nylander or Tavares for defenceman trade and they're much better balanced.
-
You know you're not far off, Vancouver probably overpaying by a bit. I think take Raty out and it's a bit closer. Obviously these trades never happen though. I wonder, what about Petey + 1st + player like Beauvillier for Bedard, who does/doesn't do that? Petey is currently a solid two way 100pt player. The first could be say Reinbacher, a possible future top-4 shutdown RD (or a bust), and Beauvillier is a middle-6 winger good for 15 goals or something. There's risk involved with first rounders, if Reinbacher ends up being a Slavin/Tanev-type player, it's pretty close, but who's to say Bedard will be a 150pt player, yet alone one who's solid defensively. At his best he's a Crosby, at his worst a McDavid (controversial, yes, but Crosby has playoff guts and is so solid defensively, McDavid gets roasted defensively).
-
They could probably just sling him on the 4th line wing and wheel him out for the powerplay. Purely based on say points this year, the Canada lineup would be something like: Hyman - McDavid - MacKinnon RNH - Point - Stamkos Skinner - Crosby - Giroux Benn - Tavares - Kyrou The bottom-6 is sort of hovering just above or just below a PPG, and if Bedard is anything like McDavid in his rookie year, we can expect him to score at a PPG pace so I'd rather have Bedard in there over Kyrou (or Benn after his most recent antics).
-
Would sure be interesting. If all players were available, does Bedard crack the lineup?

Is the Current Canuck Defence Playoff Team Quality? (My Analysis)
DownUndaCanuck replied to JamesB's topic in Canucks Talk
Yeah I do wonder this - he had some good games under Tocchet but then also glimpses of his former self. He looked the same at the WJC and this was against very weak forwards. I'm not convinced, I think we really should try and move Myers but doubt we'll be able to. OEL sadly isn't going anywhere with his contract so we just have to hope that Foote and Gonchar can turn the clock back and make him respectable. The way it stands, OEL is our 2nd LD playing with Hronek, and Myers is arguably our 2nd best RD but probably playing on a 3rd pairing. So essentially our 3rd and 4th best defencemen respectively. By comparison, Florida's 3rd and 4th best guys are Gudas and Forsling, Vegas' are Whitecloud and Martinez. I don't think Allvin will be able to move either guy so honestly our season really rests on how well or how badly these two play. If they play the way they did under BB and can form a solid shutdown pairing then we're a top-10 team in the league, no question about it. If they play like they did at the start of last year we're struggling for the playoffs at best yet again. -
MATHEW WOOD IS THE BEST PLAYER TO TAKE
DownUndaCanuck replied to hockeygod77's topic in Canucks Talk
Wood has done well and produced some clutch scoring, but I can't help but think that if we draft size and toughness over skill yet again we'll be burned with another Virtanen. -
Sounds like Dubas is going to the Pens which makes sense - he made a lot of quite shrewd moves in Toronto to fit guys in with the cap, especially on defence and with O'Reilly, and I think that's what Pittsburgh is going to want more of to try and extend their window. They surprisingly have 20M in cap space and just have to sign a goalie (probably Jarry) and pretty much an entire bottom-6 but that can be done easily. Their defence and stars are pretty much locked up. I don't think they're ready for a retool, they might as well go for it while they still can.
-
Insurance or not, I wouldn't re-sign him, his QO is going to be what, 2.5M? I'd rather sign a UFA like Connor Clifton (coming off a 1M deal, bottom pairing minutes with Boston all year long) or Schenn or heck even Burroughs can play that role for a lot cheaper, or we take the option of acquiring a slightly better guy for only what, 2-3M extra?
-
Sounds silly if we can get a late first and a second or two I'd be all over it. I'd just go nuts and take every defenceman available - take Strbak with the 19th overall, and a couple of Willander, Lindstein, Simashev, Gulyayev, Dragicevic etc. Take 3 defencemen and roll the dice on them. There is a risk taking a defenceman as highly as 11OA like Reinbacher that he may not pan out, whereas it always seems to be the case that good top-4 defencemen end up going in the late 1st/2nd round, so why not take 3 instead of 1?

[Discussion] Logan Stanley
DownUndaCanuck replied to Angry Goose's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Watching him from time to time, he's just not that good, probably drafted way too high because of his size. He'd be a real project who may pan out on a different team, may not. At the worst, he's a pretty good big, strong bottom pairing defenceman but I doubt he'll ever reach the potential he was promised. Problem then is that we've got too many bottom pairing defencemen, we end up shoving one of them in our top-4 and the general quality of the team really gets dragged down. For example, having Bear as Hughes' partner, that's essentially a 7th defenceman/guy who couldn't crack Edmonton and Carolina's roster, and is now playing on our top pairing, arguably our 3rd or 4th best defenceman. We need to stop fishing for projects who are other team's run-off and acquire proper top-4 defencemen. Hronek was a good move, but he's one guy. When you compare these guys to even the final 4 playoff teams, not many of them crack that lineup.
