  1. Would be so sad seeing a fan fave playing alongside McDavid, ripping us apart scoring 50 goals a year for the next 3 years.
  2. Zacha just got almost 5M for scoring at a 48 point pace. Garland is pretty much scoring at that pace and his deal was signed ages ago. There's lots of variation, sure, but I think the top end deals are going to get silly. We just need bench marks to go off, MacKinnon and McDavid's deals are sort of that. I worry what Matthews is going to make, and then likely every other big deal will fall into line under that. Petey at 10M for a 100pt season sounds great, but 100pts in today's NHL is probably similar to the Sedins scoring 82 points. I can't quite remember their proportion of cap hit but doubt it was that massive a chunk because obviously the cap isn't going up as fast as the scoring. Would be wise to wait out all these mega contracts, it will surely cripple young teams soon and leave them a bit like Toronto - top heavy with little depth. Fair play to Seattle for coming into the league and signing a bunch of relatively cheap deals.
  3. I really wanted Zacha and Marino in the offseason from NJD and there must have been a trade to be made there as NJD got rid of both of them. 3C and 1RD fixed, we could have given up a lot for that. Can't remember their cap situation but Miller/Boeser + Rathbone/Schenn + 2nd/3rd would surely get it done. Miller + Schenn + 3rd last year for Zacha and Marino sounds outrageous considering Miller was a 99pt guy but boy would it have worked out well for us. That's the sort of bold move that would have easily put us in the playoffs.
  4. Yep overpaid, sure, but this is exactly what the Canucks were missing this year. He's on a 48 point pace, terrible at faceoffs but plays 13-15 minutes on their third line and PK and plays well physically. We should have hunted for a cheaper 3C like him this offseason. Instead we blow that money on Mikheyev (when we already have Boeser and Garland). Overpayment, sure, by a smidge, but that Boston team is well built and always has been with big, strong two way centers, a star defenceman and good top-4 guys, a great tandem goalie system and their last priority is depth at winger because they can roll anyone in their top 9 alongside the core centers and D and they'll produce. When you've got such good defensive centers it really lets guys like Pasta and Marchand and even Debrusk now run riot offensively. Meanwhile the Canucks load up on wingers and have an AHLer in Dries or Aman as our 3C, and our 4th line center is Lazar who is basically Boston's 5th center and wants good enough for them, not to mention Studnicka too.
  5. Exactly, and best of all, fans will come to cheer individual performances. To watch a 1st round pick score their first goal, shoot up the rankings, be in the running for the Calder etc. will be minor victories the fans will get behind. I know FA wants playoff revenue but there's not much point gunning the team for a 4 game sweep - not much revenue there. Might as well tank, sell out regular season games to watch an exciting young team grow and then when they are ready in 3-5 years we'll get consistent playoff revenue.
  6. Proof that this team would tolerate a tank nicely, ownership just needs to see this. Question is, would it still sell tickets? I'd like to think so
  7. This thread is really going to heat up the deeper we drop into the top 10. I know Michcov and Sale are ranked around where we may pick but really hope we don't go for BPA, the last thing this organisation needs is another winger. Not many D in the top 10 unless some team gambles high on Sandin-Pellikka (it's got Allvin written all over it) but our franchise could use a solid center under Petey. Wouldn't mind Will Smith or Dvorsky or Yager...
  8. Before this road trip we could have made a trade, forward for a defenceman, and I think we could have picked up some wins, stay competitive, then deal Bo for a young D and center at the TDL and make a real push. Management have done NOTHING and watched the season slide before their eyes, it's too late now to do anything, they can't make any hockey trades and realistically cannot be competitive this year so have to think rebuild to some degree. Even if they want to do it stealthily and trade our players for very young 20-25 players who likely aren't good now but will grow with the team, they have no chance to be competitive this year. Maybe they aim for the playoffs next year but I'd rather we just full sell and gain a bunch of picks and prospects than young players other teams have given up on. It was on this new management to fix the defence as soon as they were hired. They made moves for 7th D-men instead of hunting quality guys (UFA or trade a forward) and we're over a year into their tenure and nothing has changed so they shouldn't be surprised.
  9. Coaching changes are a lazy way for organisations to try and get a cheap fix to some bad underlying problems. It worked with the Green firing briefly but at the end of the day there are just too many holes in this team. Bruce's 50 games last year was a surprising success, our forwards got better but our defence was never great and the only major difference this year has been lack of stellar goaltending. Good goalies can impact how we judge coaches and it really has shown lately, with AHLers behind an AHL defence. If management fire Bruce and hire someone else nothing will change, it's like they're trying to avoid the elephant in the room and do everything EXCEPT fix the defence substantially. Tocchet is a .500 coach with Arizona and TBL before that. Not sure why we're focusing on him, a coaching change isn't going to make a tiny bit of difference to this team whatsoever. A winger for defenceman trade would fix a heck of a lot, but firing BB won't achieve much. You could argue that Bruce's system is quite offence-based and leaves an already vulnerable D and goalie even more exposed, in which case a guy like Dave Tippett (for example) may have more success - preach solid defence first from the forward group as well, we knock off a good 5-10 points of offence per player but they play much more cohesively and conservatively to help out our weak defence. That may be where Tocchet is more fitting than BB but honestly we're so bad on paper on defence I doubt it'll matter. As good as Bear has played, you could argue that 5 of our 6 decencemen (everyone but Hughes) doesn't dress for any of the playoff teams.
  10. Cleaning management out this offseason wouldn't be an embarrassment, it'd be the right decision. I hope FA bites his bride and just cleans house, starts from scratch. What would be more embarassing is sticking to the same process, likely lose a couple of good players, fire the coach and keep a very similar squad going into next year for more of the same thing. We have such a good forward group, good injured goalie and pathetic defence. We are a couple of smart trades away from becoming a playoff team (ie. Getting a couple of top 4 defencemen) or a couple of trades away from starting a proper rebuild and gaining some great picks and prospects. However right now when the team needed it, management's done neither.
  11. Smart move, they pretended like they'd be ready to contend, crapped the bed then sell again at the TDL. Risky business because that's a big cap hit so they'll have to take cap back, but it's instant value out of nothing - likely yet another first round pick. If they get Bedard it's all over. That being said it's one thing to tank (which they've done well), it's another thing to turn all those picks and prospects into victories which we've seen many teams struggle to do. Got to think in a couple of years once their top pick this year gets a season or two under their belt, they should acquire some veterans to show them how it's done.
  12. Button has Fantilli at 2nd overall, Sandin-Pellikka at 10 overall. Don't think anyone will touch Fantilli after his crap world juniors, Carlsson looks much more NHL ready, I think he'll go 2OA. SP was ranked in the 2nd round by most guys before the World juniors but I agree, quick puck moving Swedish defenceman, he'll go top 15 easily, has a Canuck pick written all over him if he's still available for us.
  13. But how lol In a cap-less world we could trade Brock and Miller for 2 firsts and maybe a 3rd, then use those picks to shift the two D elsewhere. However cap world says we've got to take bad cap back but I wonder if we could take shorter contracts back which expire in the next couple of off-seasons.
  14. Problem is, who do you replace these guys with? Teams aren't just going to give us their best players to replace Boeser or Myers or Miller. Chances are we get guys like Dumba back who we soon find out plays D like Myers, or Kapanen back who is so snake bitten all the time like Garland and then we complain about these guys too.
  15. It's all well and good saying this but we are gonna be so deep in cap hell this off-season. 2.4M comes off the books (dead cap) Bear needs to be resigned, likely 3-4M bridge (say 2M raise) Dermott and Schenn's contracts expire, if we were to re-sign them surely their caps would be similar (no raise) Miller's 3M raise kicks in Kuzmenko gets a likely 5M raise Bo gets a 3M raise That puts us at 11M over the cap and we're basically no better than we are now, that's just to keep the dead beat under-.500 team together. Somethings going to have to give. I worry management will use buyouts too liberally and handcuff us with more dead cap. Moving big contracts out like Boeser or Myers will be tough, OEL and Pearson almost impossible. My biggest concern is we'll focus on re-signing Bo and Kuzmenko and forget about the defence again, let Schenn and Dermott walk and fill those spots with AHLers/Rathbone/Burroughs like we're not already thin enough on defence. A simple solution would be to trade Bo or Miller + Boeser and pray someone will give us some bad cap for Myers.
  16. Not a surprise when we've spent 14M on wingers in the off-season and have 1 decent NHL defenceman in Hughes, and have made 3 trades for other team's 7th defencemen and elevated them to our lineup (Schenn, Bear and Stillman) and have them playing alongside overpaid ageing veterans who are slowing down drastically (OEL and Myers). Not a surprise at all. Combine that with 2 AHL goalies, it should be expected. If we traded for a decent top 4 defenceman or two and had Demko in net none of this would be happening but here we are.
  17. His play could eeeasily dip next year and then we're stuck with yet another overpaid player. 5M x 2 or 3 would be my number but watch him get 6.2M x 3
  18. Sadly agree, don't think we've even seen the darkest days yet. JB really messed us up with the OEL deal but go figure not long after that our new management handcuff us with an even bigger 8M monster deal which ends in the player's late 30s. Not even finished cleaning up the last GM's mess and now we have a new one, it's like we're trying to create a core of big cap hits to sink us. I could see JR resigning at the end of the season or next, he sounds surprised by how hard it's been and Allvin will not be able to float by himself, will get fleeced by other smarter more experienced GMs and get fired. We can clean house as many times as we want, only 1 year ticks off those monster cap hit deals...
  19. This might be the start of an 8 game losing streak. We might beat the Avs, they're the worst team upcoming, who we face twice, but they look a lot better recently and will be desperate. We may beat Edmonton but that's the end of a back to back (which we've been surprisingly good at this year). Realistically we are playing contenders until a game against Chicago which we'll surely snap our 8 game losing streak. If we do blow them all, that leaves us with a win % of 0.38, good for 4th last in the league...
  20. Myers is a +3 on the season, this stat is sometimes so bogus, especially on a team that scores so much. If we're not able to move OEL's contract we should look to try and improve him with a better partner. We're looking for a top 4 RD to play with Hughes, but realistically we need one for OEL too. Bear has played admirably while being here and is the easy choice for top-4 RD next year and I'd like to see him paired with the slower OEL to help cover a bit more, then we hunt for a physical stud for Hughes and dump Myers. In the ideal world, we'd trade a winger (Miller) for a top RD (say Severson) to play with Hughes, another forward (say Boeser) for another RD (Dumba), trade Myers to whoever will take him, play Bear on the bottom pairing with Schenn or Dermott and we've finally got an all-NHL defence. I know Severson and Dumba are far from reliable defensively but they're proper bonified relatively youngish RDs who can play a good 20-25 minutes. I think if OEL played with a proper top-4 RD he'd become much better too defensively. Just quietly he's on pace for 40pts too
  21. Hopefully they do something similar in the offseason and the fans can convince ownership that we will stick around for a rebuild and watch games - it might be the only way forward. Convince the money-grubbers that we'll still sell tickets if we're losing by focussing on the little victories and watching our kids develop and know that even though we're losing, it's towards something. If FA could see and believe this, I think he'd allow a proper rebuild and then it's full steam ahead - any management team we hire or have will surely happily blow up this mess.
  22. The time for a winger-for-RD trade with LAK has come and gone. We had Boeser, they have plenty of young RDs not named Clarke, we missed the boat. Matt Roy was the guy I'd want, decent size, 27yo, plays 18 minutes but does so well under some steep competition and could be a 20+ minute guy, and he's got a nice offensive stat line now too. He'll never get more minutes over Doughty and Spence and soon Clarke, but from what I've seen he's much more reliable defensively. Looks like a bigger, stronger Ethan Bear at times. Boeser for Roy, surely LAK would have taken that before they nabbed Fiala. I just don't believe these deals weren't out on the table, especially when the teams go and make a similar trade weeks later. The other one that really peeved me off was Marino, we could have found a way to acquire him. Pens have wanted Boeser for ages. I know they get a young D and pick for Marino but you can't tell me we could have tabled a similar or better offer, and now look how well NJD is flourishing with a solid young two way RD. You give up Boeser+ or (if Pens wanted something similar to Ty) Rathbone+2nd for that.
  23. Wright + 1st would be quite a shakeup. Sounds like Seattle are in the discussion which I'm surprised about. More realistically the Canucks want to stay competitive, a young RD and C coming back. Horvat for Geekie + Borgen (big strong RD 26yo) + a pick (2nd?) fits that bill. Not the best combo
  24. Only trade I could see worthwhile would be one for a 20 year old defensive prospect on a team who wants a big strong scorer up front, there's got to be some out there. If Kuzmenko leaves it changes things too...
  25. Insane stat about how high his even strength points per 60 mins are compared to other forwards, a solid 0.3 pts clear which is a fair bit relatively. 100pt pace, he's become a true star this season and it isn't going to be an anomaly. Wonder if he can have a Robertson-like year next year.
