I don’t think we can have any more call ups unless there is an injury.

I really like his puck control and ability to hold the puck long enough to find a better play. That’s what confident players do. He has also really stepped up his defensive game. Abby is @ great place for him to develop his game because he is getting a ton of ice time and responsibility. Coach Colliton and his assistants + Sedins, is a great place for young players to polish their game. In addition, having a couple of former NHL scoring champions teach you the finer points ofvth3vgame and the fitness and dedication required to be a successful NHLer is a pretty extraordinary situation. If I was a college free agent or junior overages, or undrafted Euro, this is where I’d want to come to become an nhler. I’ve gotta think that player agents too, have to see how this situation can help their young clients.

When Rathbone first came into the AHL, he was a very confident player in both ends of the rink. That confidence took a shellacking during the Green/Boudreau regimes. Between injuries, too, he lost a lot of development time. I sure wish coaches would review his first season game film, because there is plenty there for him to reclaim and build on.

I watch pretty much all the Abby games, and it’s hard to think of a single player that has not had significant improvement - Raty among them. Raty’s defensive game was good from the outset, but he lacked confidence on the arrack, now he looks much more confident. Like Kravtsov, also a very promising guy at the time of his draft, they really have not been developed very well - I think Kravtsov like Raty, would benefit greatly from some time in Abby and guidance on building his strength and stamina. Getting stronger helps with confidence, especially for players introduced into league essentially as boys having to compete physically with men. Building their physical strength helps enormously with most of these kinds of picks. You can also see this in the improvement of both Hughes and Pettersson as they physically matured.

Sure, him leaving will give the team a resurrection.

Why on earth would you curse Hronek with having to play with OEL? Do you hate Hronek that much? Before OEL spent his last dozen games out of the lineup, he had the second worst +/- in the nhl and dragged down the performance o& anyone cursed to play with him. But his +/- actually flatters him compared to actually watching him play. He gives up way too much room on the outside in his own zone, he can’t pivot left to save hi# life. He always lines up when holding the blue line when the other team is attacking our zone, way too far toward the center oft he ice, allowing attackers to get great angles to shoot from while on the rush. He rarely holds the blue line against the rush because he can’t effectively do so. The reason the team has done so well in his absence is because he is absent. If all is right in the world, his contract will be bought out and the savings applied to the cost of covering Hronek’s cap hit.

Hopefully we can have another Youngstars Tourny in the fall to get a look at this kid.

Just had to repost this comment on behalf of the authors to maybe turn this back into the Josh Bloom thread.

I think the scouts did a great job, but his fit with two elite players does carry the blessing of good fortune. He brings a lot of what Mikheyev brought to the line earlier- speed and energy, less D than Mikheyev, but, I think, more offensive smarts. He is better on the forecheck than I expected, and wiling to take the abuse dished out near the opponent’s net. Apart from being with Pettersson and Kuzmenko, he probably reverts to what he was with the Isles. But good for us, we have Pettersson and Kuzmenko to line him up with. One of the great blessings of having a great player, like Hughes and Pettersson, is the make better players of those around them. Gotta give JB and his staff some credit for those two choices + Demko, after I dumped all over them about Virtanen, Juolevi, and giving away Forsling for less than a song.

I think he got what he wanted after Hughes, Pettersson, and Miller got big bites. Had we offered early in the process 6.5 or so before the season started, we might have signed him. As it is, I don’t mind at all the deal we got - we replaced his point production via Beauvillier, got an intriguing prospect in Raty (who is looking more and more like a real 3C player in Abby), and we got a first round selection that we have translated into a guy who lead the right D’s in Hronek, after we tossed in a second and got back a fourth. Granted that Hronek will soon be back to 100% health, and that is shaping up to be a great deal. Right now it looks like we are the early winners on that trade, to be seen how much when we see how much Hronek helps us, but the thing that would really put it over the top is if Raty turns into a 3C. Of course, Detroit could really score on the first rounder, and even the decently high second that we surrendered. To be seen.

[PGT] Vancouver Canucks at Anaheim Ducks | Mar. 19, 2023

Third game in four nights on the road, just won a real tough one in the shootout, it would have been real easy to have a letdown. But, tonight the stars starred and the journeymen journeyed. They pretty much outplayed the Ducks from beginning to end. I know Anaheim doesn’t top the standings, but it would have been real easy to lose focus, and they didn’t - Canucks are beginning to look like a decent team. Really liking on our young D. -
Yeah, Rypien wasn’t the only smaller guy with great fighting skills, Scottie Walker was another undersized guy who crushed a ton of guys he had to punch up to: both had lots of TKOs. Woo has been crushing lots of big guys with his hits this year. The

Woo has really taken advantage of his circumstance, the coaching in Abby has really brought out the best in him, and he has rediscovered his confidence, Love to see it. Such a smooth, confident goal was his last - beauty, as Cherry would say.

I don’t know about that, Burroughs and Juulson are about the same size, and have both really asserted a physical presence since Tocchet and Foote have arrived in Van. Contact is about leverage and skill, not just size. Hughes is small, but he has managed to play a controlling game this year. He has managed to play a plus game against the best the NHL has to offer - he does not physically dominate, yet he dominates. Woo is great at making opponents “Woozy”!

I really love the way Bains is developing. I watched a recent game that he dominated with three brilliant plays that exhibited wonderful creativity and gritty determination. Those are the qualities that one looks for in a future NHLer. His compete is off the charts, and his creativity is befitting of a past WHL scoring champion. I really hope he has the patience to stick with the process because he is really taking advantage of his situation on this team. His development is remarkable - he could really be a future top six player in Vancouver. I think Kravtsov and McDonough could really benefit enormously from the coaching situation in Abby. That experience could really bring their games (and their confidence) to an NHL level. I haven’t been able to say that of a Canuck farm team since the days when they developed Burrows, Kesler, Hansen, Grabner, and Bieksa. I guess Rutherford and his crew deserve some credit for that. What a great place to bring young players to bring them on. No wonder Jurmo wants to come over. Could we use a 6’4” 200 lb + left D that can skate? I sure hope Livingstone, Hirose and their agents are taking notes.
-
I know it’s cherry picking to carve off game segments to evaluate performance, but how else do you detect trends? Raty has 2 goals 5 assists in his last seven games, while playing strong D. Hat is an encouraging sign? Or just a statistical anomaly? Viewing those games argues that is just a consequence of increasing confidence as he asserts himself over the games he plays. Hopefully that is the explanation. Actually watching the games, not just the stats argues for that. Maybe this guy is our emerging 3C in Vancouver - he is responsible defensively. I really appreciate the coaching and development on this Abby team. It has really turned into a great place for players to develop, and that is something to sell to college free agents.,

I hate seeing them loose, but I want the better shot at Bedard. I’d say I’m conflicted. -

Man, are the Canucks ever flat tonight. -
Heck, I thought with his massive contract that Bo was their biggest offensive threat. But then, unlike Pettersson or Miller, Bo is not a play driver and requires someone else to drive play - which is why I said that his performance was enhanced by playing with Petey, Hughes, Miller, and Boeser. Pettersson and Miller have enormously enhanced the performance of whoever they play with, not something that Bo has done in his career.
-
It wouldn’t surprise me, but strictly as depth. If we can shed Myers, we have Hronek, Bear, and a pick of Juulson or Johansson. I think the team would prefer the young guys if they can play. If not, Schenn would be handy, especially if we are playing a tough team.
-
Ah. I don’t think Bo is a big, fat, lazy anything - but I do think he pretty much gave up on playing defence this year in order to enhance his contract resume. Which worked for him. He managed to make an outlier year into an extra couple of mil - good for him and good for us. Because Bo ignored his defensive responsibilities and got more goals, we got more in return than I thought we would. Great. Essentially, for Horvat and a second, we got Beauvillier, Hronek, Raty, and a fourth - in my mind, a good deal - if Hronek is healthy after recovering from his injury.
-
That pretty much describes him.
-
Why? Do I have to upgrade Pettersson’s performance because Mikheyev got hurt?
-
Somebody called him a “fat, lazy, turd’? Not me. The worst I’ve ever said of Horvat was years ago when I said he was not a number one centre, and I said he was not even a number two centre on a good team.

His production had fallen off a cliff in 2019/20, while he was still in Arizona, and never recovered. Arizona knew this and thought they had died and gone to heaven when JB came sniffing. They happily unloaded boat anchor OEL and threw in fifty pounds of lead shot with Garland. Heck, JB blew up 13 million of cap before breakfast, along with a ninth over all pick, plus an early second. In return the Coyotes erased three earlier Benning goofs: Eriksson, Roussel, and Beagle. Jb managed to erase his earlier foul-ups by committing an even bigger one. Still, not to be outdone by this colossal debacle, Benning allowed Markstrom, Tanev, Stetcher, and Toffoli to escape with not even a bag of pucks coming back in return. JB managed to do the impossible: he made Jake Gordon look like a genius by comparison - he managed to stack goof on top of goof in a teetering inverted pyramid of shame. It is impossible to shed OEL without giving up a raft of assets, which establishes exactly how much he is worth - his value is measured in negative numbers. Or we could buy him out at enormous cost - a second confirmation of his lack of worth. In addition, he has a full no-trade clause so that we can neither trade nor demote him. Our alternative is to keep him on the roster when he returns from injury, but if we want to play winning hockey we have to keep him off the ice - which leaves us less flexible in roster moves… and we are stuck with his massive cap hit. Nevertheless, if we want to win, we can’t play him. Our winning ways began with his injury - his near league leading for D -23 providing evidence as to why.
