Yeah, it’s a great time to be old, I’m so old I can get vaccine for diseases the CCP hasn’t even invented yet.

Sitting in the stands watching the likes of Roussel and Eriksson would not be a happy prospect for Podkolzin.
-
The fact Virtanen’s new contract will overpay him in the coming year will help to protect him. It might be worth surrendering a mid round pick to protect Motte.
-
With Try, I think the front of our net would not be place that it is now, which is a good place to take a relaxing vacation for our opponents - for the most part.
-
Yep, Eriksson might be one of the gentlest players I have ever seen - Cliff Ronning had way more bite than Louie.
-
I would not protect Motte and Lind over Gadjovich, and too bad a no trade protects Pearson - the fact that he is overpaid in his new Sutter-like, Beagle-like, Roussel-like contract protects the Canucks from having Pearson poached.
-
Gotta love Gadjovich’s off ice work ethic and dedication to improvement. Too bad he didn’t have Virtanen’s speed, just wish Virtanen had Gadjovich’s dedication and consistency.

Number one D on PP, and first line even strength. Not so much on PK. Cull appears to be developing Rathbone like he did Rafferty. Rafferty, by the way, had numbers like Rathbone last season till Brogan got hurt, At that time he was more than a point per game and had a gaudy +/-. Toward the end of that shortened season, Rafferty was logging big minutes on both special teams, closing out periods, closing out games, and finished at +17, bested only by his defensive partner, Brisebois at +21. There was wild speculation on this site that Rafferty couldn’t defend, yet an analyst that follows Utica noted that he hadn’t seen Rafferty get beat all last season. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Rafferty killing penalties by season end - probably at first when we are short handed and losing by two or more near the end of a game - that was how Cull introduced Rafferty to the PK. They were already losing, were short handed and needed a couple of goals. The main caveat to that however, is that Rafferty is a bigger guy than Rathbone at 6’2 200, to Athbone’s 5’11 190. Another guy to watch, and who was playing very well just before the Covid lay-off was Woo, looks like he may need another game to get hi# game back after the layoff.

Rathbone just made the defensive play of the game defending on a two on one - great skills, great decision making.

Yeah, that was a great play, but as I recall he made two great passes like that in that game - behind the end line, near the corner on the right side of his own net to a winger streaking up the left side, and hit him on the stack at the opponent’s blue line.

Great play by Anas and nice pass by Rathbone on Gadjovich’s second of the game. Gadjovich is a monster near the net - he reminds me of a big, physical version of Luke Robittaile. We could use a guy like this playing with Pettersson.
-
Great list, thanks. His size and stick length help him keep the puck out of trouble.

Great list, thanks.

Comets now up 2-1. McKenzie (Rathbone, Stevens) Rathbone now 2g 5a in 7 GP - one period to go. Gadjovich (Anas, Reinke) Gadjovich now 10g 2a 12 GP - one period to go. Focht having a good game, generating some great chances, but only hit metal so far. Lockwood kind of turned the game around - Comets we’re down 1-0, when he had a great shift in the offensive zone and drew a penalty. That shift fired up the team and they whole team started cranking up the energy and the pressure. Rathbone as slick as ever. Gadjovich does more than just score, couple of very heavy hits - which seems to be his routine - run over a couple of guys to get his blood up, then do the dirty work on the boards and make plays close to the net.
-
Comets back at work: John Stevens from Anas and Gadjovich (point now in every game).GP 10 G 8 A 2 Pt 10. Utica going on the two man advantage.

No it’s not. They are going nowhere this year, you think Juolevi doesn’t know that, it is the perfect time to play him in that roll, there is nothing at stake but his own progress as a player. It is the perfect opportunity to play the young guys - or at least all we can afford to play within Benning’s cap.

Why? Justify, in the long term (since we have no immediate prospect of being a playoff team - never mind contender) that it makes sense to invest more time in a player whose best years are long past. And Juolevi is no kid, Juolevi will be 23 in a month, this is his fifth year with this organization. He has played his way out of Utica inti a limbo where he no longer gets to play - never mind be challenged to get better - we have just thrown him on the scrap heap, like Rafferty (last year’s best player in Utica), and like DiPietro - among our best prospects, they remain, unplayed.

Edler, himself, wasn’t ‘eased into his role’ - look back to the FACTS, he was dumped into it by injury to Ohlund. It certainly did Edler no harm, in fact, it probably accelerated his development. You don’t develop a player by having him play ‘down’ you develop him by having play ‘up’ a level. Juolevi needs to play, and there is no point in this season in playing a Edler. Nailing Juolevi’s butt to the press box does nothing to develop him, and he is the future, not Edler - we need to be looking at replacing Edler. One of the reasons this team is mired in mediocrity is that we have realized little or nothing from expiring talents because we did not move them soon enough. We got nothing for the Sedins, precious little for Kesler (then we overpaid the third liner we ultimately got for him - namely Sutter). Burrows and Hansen were both traded too late. Hamhuis was mishandled. Cap mismanagement led to the loss of Tofolli, Tanev, Stetcher, and Leivo. The consequence of trading away draft slots, and waiting too long to divest of aging vets is that you end up with an organization so thin on prospects, that can only ice half a club on its farm team. That Benning is wasting time and assets negotiating with a thirty year old third line winger in Person, is laughable. He is easily replaced by Vesey at a fraction of the cost. Now, cudos to Benning for grabbing Vesey and Boyd - but then negating that by re-signing a soon to be has been in Pearson, is next to absurd. We are in no position to be continuing to fill our team with vastly overpaid third and fourth liners, when in the near future we need every scrap of cap space to sign the supposed core of this team - Demko (done), Pettersson, Hughes, etc.

This season is over, that is what you don’t seem to be getting. You can’t break in the kids unless you actually break them in. Juolevi is more than ready. On the other side, Rafferty just needs playing time at this level. Rathbone and Woo need the rest of this season in the AHL. People also forget that when Edler broke in, he was thrown into the fire as a rookie - the Canucks were entirely depleted with injuries at that time - didn’t seem to do him any harm. It was Edler’s first full season, and the guy he replaced, because of injury, was the guy doing everything Edler does now - Matthias Ohlund. Look it up - 2007/8.

What good does it do to play Edler in a year that is over? This team, already struggling from a terrible schedule, is going to make the playoffs with an even more compressed schedule? I think not. If Edler agrees to a trade fine, if not, play the kids anyway. We never hesitated to break in Horvat before he had done anything in the AHL, we played Boeser, Pettersson, Hoglander, and Hughes before they had proven anything in the AHL. Juolevi has played in the AHL successfully, and has done nothing to say he can’t play in the NHL - in fact, he has played well in his short exposure.

Not really, when players like Brisebois, Sautner, Rafferty, and Rathbone were on the taxi squad and were unused. He used the forwards because he had to - there were not enough healthy bodies. But as soon as JB got the chance, he replaced them with waiver wire players, rather than continue to develop our own, such as MacEwen, DiPietro, Michaelis, and Hawrilyuk.
-
Rathbone only played a part season with Fox, he got moved back to the second unit part way through to match up against the other team’s best line.

It is very good, especially when considering his deployment.

Yes, he is an intriguing player, who I thought was really coming on until Lucic crunched in the numbers into the boards. Very unfortunate. But it is also about game awareness, if Lucic is following you into a corner, it’s a good idea to have the exposed butt end of your stick about teeth height, and blade wedged into the runner at the bottom of the boards, cuz if you are not going to defend yourself, he will crush you.
