When you see a lot of guys trying to make a quick change in direction, they have to gather themselves, adjusting their balance to accommodate a change in direction. If you’ve seen Hoglander’s workout video, it is all about core strength, and when you see him juggle while riding a unicycle it is all about quick, fine balance adjustments. I can’t watch his workouts and conclude that it does not have an affect on his quickness, balance and ability to gain leverage - so yes, there is something you are born with, but then there is all the stuff that you do. My brother is an amazing guitar player, and I’ve heard people tell my brother that he has a ‘gift’, and I can see that they mean it as a complement, but that skill grew out of hours of daily practice over a lifetime, going to the Guitar Institute of Technology, learning from session players like Tommie Tedesco, and it’s not just practice, but focused practice, each exercise focused on learning a particular skill, And I see that same devotion to improvement in guys like Hoglander. I’ve coached kids at hockey and soccer, and I stressed even when doing something simple like taking a shot on goal, that shouldn’t just float up and fire something generally at the net, but to attempt to choose and hit an exact spot, and adjust that spot and attempt to be exact. Same philosophy as using a weapon, ‘Aim small, miss small’. You teach yourself to be precise - it’s not enough to just shoot, but to shoot at something in particular. But back to the point, yes, he is an energy player, but he seems to be a very focused one.

Not helping a lot at the moment, he’s hurt. But yeah, he does bring offence with seven assists in five games, but is a liability defensively. Still, he probably adds more on the pp than what he gives up even strength.
-
He has always taken penalties, but is doing much less to make up for them.
-
He’ll be unique among the Canucks’ bottom six if he makes the team, in that he can set up his teammates and play D.
-
Shut up! Louie is one of the six million dollar defenders: Eddie, Schmidt, and Myers. & Louie. You have to bring D to get six mil with the Canucks.

Lemaire was given’ ‘em the good ole one and a half, huh?

I see him as a fourth line energy guy, penalty killer. He’s a very good fore checker, not big, but constantly harassing the other team. He’s been very well coached in college, defends well, good on the PK. He has scored in college before he got hurt, have to see if he can regain that as a pro. It’s real early, lots of time for him to develop. Rafferty found another level last year as a 24 year old, so why not this kid?
-
He might be a useful replacement for the unproductive, undisciplined Roussel. Third line scoring touch, muscle, net front presence.

We do have a right hand shooting defenceman coming in Woo, but I think he needs a couple of year in the AHL, except that with each game he plays he gives me more reason to think that won’t be necessary. He has surprised me several times already this season with just how good his hands are. If you’ve seen the Tom Hardy movie, “The Drop”, you’ll know what I mean when I say, you just don’t see this guy coming.

He didn’t get an assist on the first goal, but he was the guy that broke out the puck that led to the goal.

If we added Tryamkin that would actually increase our size and physicality on the back end and probably save us four mil per year (Edler’ 6 mil - 2 mil for Try) - Hughes, Schmidt and Juolevi would made a decent left side, or switch Schmidt to the right and add Rathbone. The right side could then be Schmidt, Tryamkin and Myers - keep Rafferty as a seventh D. Woo has been playing well, better each game, gosh know what we will have in him with a pro season under his belt.

Gotcha. They sure miss Bailey, Brisebois, DiPietro, and Rafferty. Of course, they also miss Boucher in a game like this. Baertschi has not been particularly effective this season. I’d rather have Woo than Chatfield, though, if we have to make a choice. Glaovac could really help in the middle, too, where the only natural centre is a rookie, Focht (assuming no St Louie players).

Podkolzin plays either wing. Fortunately, the cap issues will force JB to take away Green’s security blankets - Eriksson, Roussel, Sutter, Beagle, Pearson, and replace them with younger, cheaper players. That will leave room for guys like Gadjovich, Lind, Jasek, McDonough, Kunz, Michaelis to fight it out over forward spots. Not wishing him any ill will, but Ferland’s ongoing concussion problems might cause him to seek other employment - which is too bad, we need a guy with his aggression and willingness.

This star was known to enjoy his tracks through the back country. Sulu was a lulu.

Offence was never the a problem for Pedan, unfortunately he had major problems in the other end of the rink.
-
That may be true of Chatfield, but certainly not of Rafferty. Rafferty, after all, was last year’s a Rathbone.

Being stuffed up to the gills with bad contracts makes teams vulnerable to offer sheets. Canucks are rotten with bad contracts - an indication is how teams went after the players we left dangling unsigned - Markstrom, Tanev, Stetcher, Tofolli - because we didn’t have cap room.
