  1. The best way to refute bad ideas is to have people state them out loud... and permit others to refute them. This was the lesson of the Age of Reason. Of course, when people reject reason for knee-jerk emotionalism, they are truly lost. The other lesson of the Age of Reason is that we tied the consequences of stupidity to the one who was stupid; now we force others to pick up the cost of the consequences of irrationality. We have socialized the costs of living badly, as a consequence stupidity is rewarded and rationality punished - it is pure economics that we get more of the former and less of the latter.
  2. A defenceman who can skate like that, if he can learn to defend, would be far more valuable than a bottom six winger, and he is very young. Defence is a learnable skill.
  3. Because of lack of forward support our defence can’t hold the blue line. Not a single forward on this team picks up players coming late. On the fourth goal, all Miller has to do is take inside position on Matthews - terrible play by Miller. Holtby has every reason to be annoyed with a Miller. Miller seems to have a big mouth telling everybody else what to - he should shut up and do his damn job.
  4. Yeah. Since there are only two defencemen, maybe that means a forward might want to lend a little assistance. Another change would be to have a Miller and Pettersson change positions and roles. Let Pettersson simplify his game until he gets his mojo back. He is having a miserable time as a centre man against guys like the Toronto centres.
  5. Wouldn't hurt to have forwards that are willing to backcheck and have brains engaged to pick up open attackers - right now they are playing like they are brain dead. it just leaves our 23 million dollar defence running around outnumbered, trying to cover opposition forwards while our forwards catch a nap. I just love guys that only ever played forward that think the ice is only 100 feet long, starting from center ice out, and that the only reason to come back to our end is because they have to stand on our side of center for the faceoffs after a goal.
  6. Utica PP looked way better last year with Rafferty on the point, not even half bad with Juolevi on the point. This year our best prospect defencemen are currently playing ZERO minutes - Rathbone, Rafferty, Brisebois, Yuolevi. Send them down where they can play - keep Chatfield and Sautner up. Young guys have top play to work on their game.
  7. Lind first star. Strong defensive game by Teves and Lockwood. Lind taking key draws and solid defensive play - looking good as a centre.
  8. Lind’s second from Anas and Reinke on the PP.
  9. Jasek with a nice assist on Gadjovich’s goal.
  10. Lockwood has good wheels at this level and has a couple of good hits.
  11. Bit of time for Woo on the second unit PP.
  12. Lind, then Gadjovich. That’s pretty nice. Comets sure miss Rafferty and Bailey on the PP.
  13. Why is no-one taking Gadjovich? He gets Comets second goal of the season.
  14. Yep, some players that can defend and score would be valuable in Vancouver, too.
  15. Why isn’t anybody taking Cole Lind? Gets Utica’s season started, goal from Baertschi and Anas.
  16. In Russia terminate means terminate.
  17. Any player concerned about anything said on CDC is too delicate to play in the NHL.
  18. Karlsson’s not doing anything, we are just pumping up his thread numbers to make him feel better.
  19. Benn won't be getting any raise, he'll be lucky to keep a job in the NHL. Remember Schenn? He played with Hughes as well and looked good. Veteran players content to play a role with have a chance of success with Hughes - because they don't try to do too much. On the other hand, they are replaceable.
  20. I’m beginning to think Jake needs a change of scenery, and we have MacEwen still coming along, and Hoglander seems to have taken that second line spot on RW. Then there is Cole Lind coming along, maybe as a centre, and that could push Gaudette to the wing. Jake still has value, but that value decreases the longer he does not play. I’m not sure we need a body in return, we have a number of young prospects at a stage where they are becoming players, I’d prefer to get picks if we can. Benning has a strong draft record.
  21. The Russian ‘roo - he is a big guy and there is a lot of jump to his game.
  22. I think Canucks management is more concerned about winning now, and if Benn makes Hughes more comfortable, he will play at least until Hamonic is available. Much of what happens with young players depends on openings due to injury to players ahead of them, and on poor team or individual play of those on the active roster. Nobody is going to gift them a position. From his play, it is pretty easy to see how Hoglander jumped ahead of Virtanen ( a guy who had 18g and 18a in a shortened season) - he outworked him and was at least as dependable defensively. Juolevi has played well, but he hasn’t clearly outplayed the guys ahead of him. Guys who have played junior are familiar with this, it’s not enough to be good, the onus on management is to win, so to play good is not enough, you have to be better than the other guy that is equally good. Another factor standing in the way of newcomers is the record of performance of the vets. Edler, for instance, has been a valuable player in Vancouver for a long time. Management knows exactly what to expect from him. Juolevi, by comparison, is an uncertain quantity. Management and the coaches keep their jobs by winning- the uncertainty of uncertain quantities is a problem for them.
