They have been able to get him for more than a year, probably for the cost of just taking him off the Canucks hands and taking on his cap. But it’s a risk, they could take him, be on the hook for the financial bite, and he is at high risk of being back on the LTIR in a heartbeat. There is very little doubt that Baer can generate offence, for for how long, for what cost. The Sens management is not known for throwing their cash away.

Thanks, Sterlitz, appreciate the update.

I'm sure any other team could get him for essentially nothing and they have been able to for the past couple of years - nobody wants him and his concussion history. Ferland had the same kind of history with concussions, but Benning decided it wasn't a problem. Those kind of decisions are the reason we have so much unproductive or under productive cap space, On the other hand, Benning has made some fine choices in the draft, and we will see another fine choice tonight in Hoglander, and hopefully soon have another great choice in Podkolzin. Hopefully Benning's crew master cap management before we have to re-sign Hughes and Pettersson.

Why isn't anybody taking him?

It's the relative speed compared to the other players on the ice that I find impressive - amazing!

I have to say that I was down on Benn, but he has played well with Hughes the past few games - we'll have to see what happens when the opposition gets tougher... like in Winnipeg and Montreal.
-
Except for a few games Podkolzin was just getting five minutes a night on the last line. In addition, you managed to miss the fact that in World Juniors he had 9 assists to go with the 3 goals and that he is primarily a playmaker offensively.

Jasek, Focht, Costmar, Karlsson, Zlodeyev... it’s a start.

Finally, we started clogging the passing lanes through the neutral zone and turned the puck over. Petey with the wrister instead of the slapper on his goal - want to see more of that. Because he has that one timer with the slapper the D has laid back on him, so he used that - moved forward, cut down the range, buried it where my dog puts his favourite bone. Happy for Petey’s and Miller after a frustrating first period. In the Prospects thread, Podkolzin killing penalties in the KHL, plus he scored a goal. Can’t wait till he takes Roussel’s job.

A move to the middle for Lind seems to have been brewing in Utica since the middle of last season. He was taking most of the key face offs with great success in the last half of the year, his play making is strong and he is very aware and sound defensively. The Utica coaches did the same thing with Jasek the previous season. Either of them could make a good third or fourth line centre/winger. Lind also has a bit of an edge to him - he loves being a piece of sand under your eyelid.

Every player except Motte should turn his cheque over to Demko and start training for a new profession. The lack of discipline on this team is just stunning. Why Juolevi is out for Chatfield I don’t understand either - Chatfield is playing like he played in Utica tonight, the deeper problem is that so is the rest of the defence. Pettersson seems to have infected the rest of the line with his lethargic play - the problem is that none of the three is mentally active right now. Hard to play hockey when you are in a brain daze. The trainers should be handing out the ammonium carbonate.

Depends when the picture was taken - if it was taken a year ago, Podkolzin could have grown.

I wouldn’t assume that Podkolzin would have success on the Canucks PK no matter how good he is. PK is about system play, and I don’t see anyone having success with a system that has not worked for anyone to date. Even with Markstrom last year and him being a premier goaltender, the PK was 16th in the league. Presumably, Schmidt and Hamonic are better than Tanev and Stetcher. Apparently not.
-
The thing that really disturbs me is that Chatfield and Juolevi have been our best defence tonight. Chatfield not playing has been better than either of Schmidt or Myers - they were absolute liabilities. Hughes, never strong defensively, looks like he's playing hurt - now it even looks like the forwards are mailing it in. Rough start for Rafferty. I guess Rathbone will be up next... don't know how excited Rathbone will be by that.
-
Not if the Canucks don't offer him a contract because we spent all our cap on Eriksson, Sutter, Beagle, Roussel, Baertschi, Ferland, Benn and God knows what other broken down old fart.
-
I liked the postgame with Chatfield. The thing that was good about him is that he knows exactly what HIS game is, and he played within himself. That is not an easy thing. Lots of young players, and lots of vets try to do too much, or don’t get the most out of themselves. He seems very level headed and sure about who he is. That is a big deal in hockey, but even more so in life.

Loved Horvat’s game, tonight. I did not like Hughes’ game, 2 assists, but minus 4??? He is an exciting guy, but man, he needs to learn to play defence. Not having Tanev with him really reveals his shortcomings. People seem to miss that Tanev was a very smart, mobile guy who covered up a lot of mistakes that his partners’ made. Hughes 5 points in five games and -5. He needs to be partnered with someone who is smart enough to read his play and who is agile enough to adjust on the go - Rafferty.

Nice to win, but I had to take out life insurance during the game. We have a horribly porous defence. Is it just me, or do our D’s that have played elsewhere try to make plays at our blue line when the opponent is attacking, expecting a forward to pick up a check if they are not successful, but no forward picks up an attacker, like ever. Hamonic, Schmidt, Myers, Hughes all got deserted when they tried to make a play at our blue line - no forward back checking fills? At least, at home, we were able to get Pettersson’s line away from the opposition’s choice checkers. I was not optimistic that we used Chatfield, but he was the least of our problems tonight, a solid debut for him. If Edler’s out does Rathbone get a shot? Yuolevi back in? Or does the Covid kid, Benn play?
