Interesting stat concerning Woo and Focht - Calgary is -73 on PPs vs PKs - that will seriously effect point production for our prospects.

Yep, before Jake was playing on the first line, he was playing with Gaudette and making that line better. That’s how he earned a spot on the first line. Tonight we just saw Jake have a great shift reunited with a Gaudette and Roussel and they dominated Buffalo for the entire shift and our fourth line scored on an exhausted Buffalo unit, unable to get off the ice. Next season I would not be surprised to see Jake with some PK time.

Gaunce did have a couple of good runs in the AHL, but nothing like this run of Bailey’s - it’s Bailey just found his game. Kind of like this year’s Jake - with whom I find some similarity.
-
They both have similar playing weight at 214, but Bailey is 6’4” and Gaunce 6’2” which makes Bailey considerably more lean and longer in the leg - which leads to an entirely different skating style. Gaunce’s skating was always a cap on his prospects at an NHL level. In terms of accidentals they are similar, but in essentials (what makes them the kind of player they are) they are entirely different - hence different expectations - though they might face similar fates. My sense is that Bailey will have to play top six in the NHL to be successful, and he will have to play an almost individual style - he scores so many goals on an individual rush - kind of like the early Virtanen tried to do. His skills are more advanced that what Vitanen’s were a couple of years ago - probably because he is older.

Amen to the that. Anywhere there is a joint - shoulders, knees, wrists, fingers are the worst.

Xenophobia is a form of fear, but racism and tribalism are more related to hatred, disdain, and dislike - similar in that they regard people in terms of the groups to which they are perceived to belong. Tribalism is a strange cocept because there are far greater differences within each group than there are between the groups.
-
Gaunce is nothing like Bailey, they are entirely different kinds of players - for one thing Bailey is the fastest skater in Utica and he can handle the puck at speed.
-
I was originally using the term with a dose of irony. Racism is a form of collectivism - regarding an individual primarily in terms of one of the ‘collectives’ to which he belongs. More specifically, in this case it is a form of tribalism.

Yeah, he’s more than a few high iq plays this year. Not bad for a guy that has (reputedly) no hockey sense according to more than a few on cdc. Guess those power forwards can take a little longer. -

Are we playing rope-a-dope for the first two periods just to burn them out and set them up? -

Does this imply that we are dealing with a bunch of racists?

Wow. I’m so ancient I actually remember them in my moments between bouts of senility.

Well, there is one thing, it sure hasn’t been gifted to him. Podkolzin has earned every minute in the KHL. I don’t think he’ll be showing any entitlement when he gets over here - but it would sure help to ease him in with Tryamkin here...
-
I agree with your assessment re Tanev vs Tryamkin, but (big little word there) Tryamkin brings that Tanev does not, is a very physical rambunctious nature (for instance his taking on Dallas). Or this vs the Ducks
-
The thing about Vancouver and injuries... is that they just keep happening.
-
I am a very big fan of Tryamkin and his potential, but Tanev is one heckuva good defensive D. For me, the big issue with Tanev, is can he stay healthy, not can he play a key role for us. If I was to target a spot for Tryamkin, it would be 3rd pairing left D (Fantenburg or Benn), or 3rd pairing right D (Stetcher). I believe Tryamkin has the ability to play further up the lineup - ultimately, but that is to be seen. Another player that we may want to work into the lineup is Rafferty, and another who next year may earn a look is Juolevi.

Confidence is a funny thing; there is the confidence of the player in himself, but also the confidence of the coach in the player, and the confidence of the organization in the player. The lack of any of those means the player doesn’t get to play. In the just passed world junior tournament, Podkolzin was second on his team in ice time - played in all key situations - most of any Russian forward. He looked like a very confident forward. Why was he played in all situations? On his KHL team, he was unable to get more than a few fourth line minutes - no confidence from a coach who needs to win now. But it would seem he was observed in tournament play because he has returned to his KHL team, has more minutes and his first two goals for that team. As for organizational confidence, I think Benning has already made a statement about that - he expended a high first pick on a guy with what appeared to be a scant statistical record. Benning and his scouting staff have made an increasingly impressive record at drafting young players. Some, like Jake, have taken a while to impress (and some would still say they are not impressed), and Juolevi (hampered and development delayed by injury) - but other than that, Boeser, Pettersson, Hughes, Gaudette, and others now impressing elsewhere argue to the efficacy of their scouting and development. Players such as Rafferty, Lind, Demko, MacEwen, Bailey, Jasek, Teves, Gadjovich, Juolevi have all shown great improvement. Most recent draft selections have almost all shown great development wherever they are playing, which speaks volumes to their ability to identify potential.

One year contracts may work well both for Edler and the Canucks as we transition in new players and Edler’s workload is eased. If we reach the point where Edler is our third pairing Left D, that would be a pretty darned nice place to be in.
-
Something that turned me around on Edler is that in previous years he has shown flaws - bad pinches, putting slapshots from the point into defenders pads only to have the puck pop out behind him. But even as a distinguished veteran, he worked to improve his game - rarely now do you see him make bad pinches, rarely do you see those big slappers, mostly now you see low wristers from him off the point - the kind of shots that players will stand in front of the net without fear of having their head taken off - and we see his wristers deliberately directed at players for the tip. That Hughes has been able to take the first PP unit and give it a style, Edler has taken the second unit and made it effective using the rush and forwards driving the net for the tip. Lately the second unit has been the more effective of the two - of course playing against the send PK unit can help there too.

Funny. The first great Russian coach, Anatoly Tarasov was asked what he did to improve the Russian team so much... in his book he said something to the effect that he got all of the film he could find of Bobby Orr, broke down his skating, and trained the Russian players of his day to skate like Orr. From the results of the '72 series, he may have had some success.
