They have their core from first round picks yes, ( demko 2nd), but they lack depth from other rounds or poor drafting,, they have to overpay for depth of team and have made bad choices in the past with terrible contracts even recently signed ones they now regret ( allegedly of course). For 10 years or longer the canucks try to cover their misteps by overpaying for ufa’s.

[Rumour] Canucks Getting Calls on Luke Schenn
cocanuck replied to Warhippy's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I highly doubt anybody would offer a first,, second would be great! Picks are great,,, who would be making them again? What was his draft record in pittsburgh? -
Of course teams re tool,, that wasnt the point. The point is the very best teams are built through the draft and having success with 2nd through even 6th round talent being strong contributers. These cheap entry level contracts are a necessity for long term success. the canucks will be fine if the can get rid of bad or over priced contracts and have great success with new additions. In that time frame, will petey still want to be here? Quinn? Demko? how many draft picks of the canucks are still on the tram in last 8 years? Not being smart ass just curious. Maybe 5? Wonder how that compares to colorado, tampa, detroit ( early but building right).

It doesnt matter how good your core group is as you can realistically only afford about three or 4 stars with the flat cap, the ability to win a cup is entirely how good your cheap contract, young draft picks are.. without good cheap depth you cant be successful. You can still be pretty good though.. when you lose your depth players who helped win a cup your drafting better be great to replace them because you cant afford to pay everybody and those players will get paid elsewhere. If you want to pay ( which generally you have to ) to get support players you are then hamstrung with contracts. Great teams are built through draft .. jr has added some nice pieces this year but there is nobody coming up to add that depth. ( debatable i know ) Draft picks are cheaper then rfa’s. Canucks keep paying way too much for ufa’s that are not worth it.

If management keeps overpaying for veteran players without having a great group of young players on cheap contracts this team is nothing more then average at best below average at most.. stop with the big contracts and draft better in rounds 2-6. Smart isnt the term i would us to classify this management group

A proper rebuild can only be successful if the right players are chosen through the draft. I will admit that the additions this year were good, however, jim rutherfords draft record isnt that great. Its very difficult to have a championship team unless you draft exceptionally well with top picks! Keep playing stillman!! -

I wish they could but i doubt any team would want that player for that contract.. here is hoping though. Its almost impossible to trade any big contract these days. Better really like the player if you sign them to a big contract. We are stuck with that one im sure. I just dont see how we can keep kuz with how he is playing. Thats a player we can trade in a heartbeat at deadline. Would hate that but thats the reality. No money to sign him -

Wow! This team is so unpredictable! Love the effort last night and didnt chase in their own end.. millers assist on horvats goal was special.. most players would have just shot from in close or tried to score. Smart plays make easy goals sometimes! Full marks. Most complete game of the year.. burrows was solid. Stillman can sit -

There are too many puck watchers inside our zone. Very poor positioning to help reduce chances against. Demko wasnt his best but it happens. Better positioning needs to be taught.. players getting goals and assists makes them money,, keeping goals from being scored makes team money and is ultimate goal for success. That isnt a priority for a lot of canuck players. -

I agree somewhat that brock isnt the reason we are losing games. Never said he was,, he is the result of a poor team makeup that has too many of the same type of player. We need players that can do the heavy lifting and are tougher to play against. Our top 9 has nobody that is and with poor D (structure haha), We cant be a consistently good enough team. Yes there is talent that can win a few but unless there is more heavy lifters this team will never win a championship. Brock would be fine if he was one of the few that played that way and not one of the many.. he has a role but too many players on this team want to play that role.. not his fault but makeup of team is problem. -

How can you say Boeser has been one of the best forwards all year? Guy is invisable except for a couple of tip ins. Gives up countless goals against and doesnt play D. It was nice to see him score but we need more guys playing like lazar last night.. team is too soft and easy to play against.. feel great for demko! I think the off season surgery is playing more of a role then he is letting on
