  1. I'm actually very curious to see how DiPietro ends up. I think he's a more technical goaltender (less raw) than Demko was at his age, but Demko has always had fantastic agility and ability to read plays. One goaltender is definitely far more reactionary than the other. The problem with DiPietro is his size. A little bit too small, but he can display that he's a fantastic goaltender at times. I really wonder how good he'll end up becoming.
  2. Where did you see that statistic on Edler? I've always preached that he's absolutely horrendous at that aspect and everybody thinks I'm delusional around here. I'd be curious to check it out. Edit: nvm, found it: https://www.vancouverisawesome.com/canucks-hockey/how-nate-schmidt-narrows-the-gap-between-the-canucks-and-the-nhls-cup-contenders-2799839
  3. Green is a mix between a good coach and an absolutely dreadful one. Some games the team plays a style that can kill any team in the league (heavy forecheck, relentless puck possession, etc) and then the next game play extremely passive. He can't get his team to play consistently and that's why this team is where it is. There's been talent on this team, and it has been utilized effectively... sometimes. Let's put it this way, he's a fantastic coach against awful teams and a horrific coach against the good teams. I like his breakout plays, but I hate his breakout/safe approach to when to enact those plays. I like how he structures the forecheck, but how often he gets them to do that isn't often enough. He CAN be a great coach, but it depends on whether or not the players want to play in their own end the entire game or whether they think a forecheck is more important than a line change. Can't knock him when the team is playing well, they're coached well. But when they aren't he can't coach his way out of the hole.
  4. https://www.sportsnet.ca/590/hockey-central-at-noon/dec-1-i-heard-they-were-doing-thumb-wrestling-or-something/ On the December 1st edition of Hockey Central, they bring on Steve Valiquette who does analysis for the New York Rangers and has a great history of analyzing modern goaltending and tracking statistics that's a better, more modern take on the "eye test" that many of us who have played and understood the game can finally flesh out with goaltenders. I recommend most of the podcast just for listening, but the part that is very interesting (and his take I agree wholeheartedly with) is around the time of 40:05 where Jeff asks the question, "Is there a goalie that you've analyzed that you feel would have a better name if he weren't playing on a bad team?" and his immediate answer is Jacob Markstrom. He goes on to break down the analytics of why Markstrom has been one of the best goaltenders in the past 3 years. Not only does he allow an incredibly low amount of low-danger chances get through him (last year he had ZERO.... Z-E-R-O during the regular season on another analysist's report), but he also stopped an incredibly large amount of high danger chances. Now most of us know Markstrom is a good goaltender, but I'm not sure how many understand just HOW good of a goaltender he was for us. I think Steve Valiquette is right, I don't think the team would be anywhere near as good if it weren't for him and I don't think they'd even stand a chance at getting into the playoffs without his performance. Now obviously with cap issues, somebody had to go. I'm still personally not quite sure letting go of Markstrom was the right deal (as opposed to playing both Demko and Markstrom this year, and getting an asset out of trading away Demko at the deadline). There's definitely a risk to giving Markstrom that huge contract as he's aging, but I've always been a guy who has the mindset of "if you have something elite, you can't just let it walk away". Goaltending is the most important position in the game and we're taking a huge gamble for the cost of 6 million dollars. Jim Benning is definitely thinking long-term, but I wonder what the repercussions could possibly be on development if goaltending doesn't get the team to where it needs to be (in the playoffs). I'm crossing my fingers Demko pans out. Goaltending is not an easy position to fill and getting consistent elite goaltending is as hard as finding a first line player. I think a large part of our success is riding on a young goalie. Fortunately for us, Demko is used to being "the guy" and his trajectory is showing fairly decently that he'll be a starter. The team has to grow significantly to become a contender anyways, but having an inconsistent goaltender could derail the entire rebuild. With that said, Go Canucks Go! Hockey still feels forever away. I can't wait to see how Demmer performs! I really hope he proves my worries to be ridiculous!
  5. I love your evaluation of those prospects hahahahaha
  6. I make plenty of positive posts about Petey, Marky, Motte, Tanev, Hughes or anybody that's playing well that game. People like you just hate it when I say somebody is not playing up to their potential. Those guys just happen to do the little things that win you games far more often than anybody else not on the team. Not everybody on the team deserves praise 100% of the time and we are here to discuss how they play hockey. Sorry if that offends you.
  7. I make plenty of positive posts. People just hate the realistic ones. Let's face it, a lot of posters on these forums are ridiculous in their assessments, doubly so for prospects.
  8. He makes us better offensively, but worse defensively when we lost Tanev in my opinion. He's a better overall player than Tanev, but we also won't have the goaltending we had last year. We are losing two of our biggest defensive pieces next year. Our team isn't gonna be better. We will lose more games.
  9. I completely agree he is an upgrade as he has a two way game, but we need defense. Nate Schmidt isn't good enough defensively to cover the defense we need to have. We literally have no true stay at home defensemen now that we can fully trust. I believe you need two on your team. For 6 mill and for what he brings I think he's making fair value for open market but the contract could end up being a killer. He's also somewhat injury prone. Don't get me wrong, I like his game but 6 mill when we just lost 3 important players due to cap is a tough pill to swallow. We got him on the cheap, but he's a big contract to be putting up less than 40 points. Not to mention that's playing with Vegas who is a team that generates off the rush way more effectively than the Canucks. He's got a great outlet pass but when our boys seemingly can't generate a shot on net 50% of the time on a 3 on 1, I just can't see him being nearly as effective. And now we even have less scoring depth. If I were Benning I'd honestly use Schmidt to offload one of our bad contracts so we can gain some wiggle room. I can't see us coming close to the playoffs this season. Hopefully I'm wrong, but I anticipate a high draft pick next year.
  10. We won't save a whole bunch on any of those buyouts. I think Baer is the biggest one though and from Sportsnet that's the one Canucks are aiming to buy out.
  11. Edler Myers shut down pair is absolutely terrifying. Gotta think Schmidt and Hughes are the shut down even though they'll be counted on for offense.
  12. Nope, that's for sure. Great trade but the cap management is just absolutely baffling.
  13. Good trade but that's another massive contract to take on again. Better hope it pans out. I do like him as a defenseman but I also think he's overpaid. We need to be searching for cheaper contracts, not more expensive ones. Personally I'd rather keep Tanev at 4 over Schmidt at 6.
  14. I honestly have this weird feeling it's how they had negotiations with the current gm crew. I think something soured. Seems really odd that guys are all just packing up and going without much word.
  15. I'm okay with not overpaying and creating a team atmosphere when it comes to contracts, but you need to figure those contracts out and whether you'll be able to afford them at the deadline. If he knew he wasn't gonna be able to keep Tanev, he should have been traded.
  16. With what team? We lack offense, we lack defense, and unless we get lucky, we lack goaltending. We just lost an elite goaltender and a fantastic #3 dman. We have some good puzzle pieces but we are in a rebuild again. Demko panning out is dire now.
  17. Pretty solid defensively. Not as good as Tanev in my opinion but he's still pretty safe.
  18. We are gonna miss those stats badly. Pretty underappreciated here some days.
  19. This team is undoubtedly worse going into next season. Hopefully we are able to be a bubble team next season.
  20. Yeah that's easy. Rumors were saying originally it was an nmc.
  21. It's unfortunate we can't sign Wayne Simmonds too for the trifecta.
  22. And that's what we should have been looking at. 1 mill cheaper and for a goalie with much better numbers.
