He could easily easily easily transition to C. He plays like a center already it just depends on if you think his size prevents him from playing C (in my opinion it doesn't). He has also stated he's open to playing C.
-
There's also a good chance he gets taken in the top 10. He is all over this draft and I really don't see him dropping out of the top 15.
-
Behind Benson, this is my second favorite choice for player to draft that we have a chance at. Both of these players' upsides are chronically underrated.

They said there was no market for good d-men. They were right as well. Nobody was getting moved and so every good d was being over-inflated in price.
-
Only reason I could see this is if they don't believe that the window will be during his prime contract years and moving things towards landing a better option for Petey's prime.

No way Columbus does this. Would need another decent player to be considered as JT is too old.
-
Most people can't watch him and his stats were underwhelming and just in general Russian factor. The risk is why he's low. He will go in the top 20. There's gonna be one team bold enough to take the guy with the highest ceiling on defense.

I'll have to listen later but did he imply Benson isn't good enough for a #11 pick? Lmfao

The Canucks since 2005 are dead last in having prospects from round 2 onwards play 100 games in the NHL. Dead. Last. 4%. Some of that is on the team too, because they outright refuse to develop and give players a chance to learn at the NHL level. And when they do this, they trade them away immediately.

[DEBATE] Which is the worst trade in Vancouver Canucks history?

Ah yeah forgot Tanev was a bit later than guys like Kes and Hansen. -

Canucks development has always been really bad. Has there been anybody they've really developed since the mid-2000's? Also they've drafted and signed quite a few offensive dmen and developed exactly zero of them. They don't even bother giving them NHL experience. Guys like Subban, Rathbone, Connauton, and a plethora of others don't ever get a chance to learn the defensive game at the NHL level and then they wonder why they're not NHL ready when they come up. -
Well this solidifies that we lost the Garland/OEL trade.

While I agree, he's also well known for his outlandish optimism of certain prospects. A lot of his selections are very off the board and in a world of their own. Have you seen his board this end of year?

First off, Craig Button. Second off, I see what he sees. My reasoning was stated above though. However after getting a fair amount of newer footage he progressed well over the season and I moved him up. I still think his trajectory will be around where it'll end up. Has a lot of upside though but has a few bad tendencies that need to be ironed out.

That's also the reason why Benning did half the moves he did. Constantly trying to save his job at the expense of the team. Not to mention the circulation of the old boys club, majority of the gm's in the league operate like complete idiots and then you get one like Kelly McCrimmon who isn't afraid to actually try to improve his team and look where he ended up.

I am 100% in support of moving up the draft to select Zach Benson.

Companies raise dividends when they need more money in stocks. Majority of the time it's not a good thing if they raise their dividends. It means they aren't performing. Edit: whoa didn't realize this thread was from 2021 lol. Nvm.

The closer we get to the draft, the more I hate the fact that we traded away our pick we got back in the trade for Bo.

Not even from just a skating standpoint but just how quickly you need to decide. There's a reason why players who were playmakers in junior don't end up playmakers at the NHL level. It's why scanning is one of the biggest and first things you need to look for in a player. If they puck watch and they don't have that ability to scan plays ahead of time they're cooked. With that said, I don't believe Wood's scanning is poor, but I worry his reliance on advantages he does have will prevent him from continuing to upgrade this fundamental skill. You see a lot of big guys (guys like Slaf) who end up just eating pucks on the walls instead of being bumper guys because they have that advantage of not being forced to move the puck immediately. A big boy who can bump pucks to start transitions is elite and that isn't something I've noticed he's been able to do. Like you alluded to, one of his fundamentals is missing in this aspect.

I think people severely underrate just how fast the NHL is as a league.

I'm saying the u18 is a horrible metric because the style of play you can get away with when you have that type of leverage makes a big difference. You don't have to be good along the walls, you don't have to make space for yourself to the degree you'd need to at the next level, etc. (obvious, I know). He has the raw skill. I disagree with your assessment of the IQ because I think he's playing an immature game. He can pass, but he's not making snap decisions. He gets out muscled on the wall despite his frame and weight, he doesn't have the shiftiness or edgework to cut inside from the wing like a Leo Carlsson can, he's not able to make consistent plays with his back facing up ice, etc. All of these are absolutely pivotal tools that he lacks, despite having a huge leg up. Everybody is banking on potential because he has above average hands and a great shot. At the NHL level how is he gonna get that shot off when he has 10x less time and space to do it? He's not gonna out-race guys to open areas when they're significantly faster than him, he's not gonna be beating the same weak defensemen over committing on 1 on 1's like we see at the level he plays at (which is the reason why his hands work now, not because he's making big lateral movements outside-in or vice versa that you need at the NHL level), he already is inconsistent with his poise because he overestimates guys closing in on him... These are details that are bad now that are going to amplify tenfold once the speed of the game gets ramped up to the best players in the world. His advantage will become a disadvantage because he's used to playing the wrong way. If he does make it to the NHL and say he reaches average skating ability (which would be an amazing achievement in itself considering his stride has little to no technique) my impression is he gets casted into a role of a PP guy. Everybody way overestimates how much these players improve. It's ultra rare that you get guys improving on so many varied details at once. You referenced Toews, but what you're also neglecting is that Toews had above average skating for his class and he was a very complete, very mature, near elite level IQ. Ultimately in the end, I suppose it's subjective so we can agree to disagree but I do highly respect (aside from leaving out Benson) your pick choices that you listed at the end there. I will also admit I'm overly nitpicky on details, but those details I view as the foundation of how guys get into the NHL. I think this particular draft year many guys have skill but many guys also lack so many of the fundamentals that will allow them to play into the league. I suppose we shall agree to disagree!

Of course he's gonna put up points against people half his size and weigh a third less than he does lol. Also every scouting report that talks about IQ says everybody has good IQ. I wouldn't read into any of that because everybody in the first round has phenomenal IQ (nonsense). I will give him credit, he's got a bomb of a shot but even if he strength trains that hunched over frame of technique he skates with looks like they took an NBA player and gave him skates. He doesn't have the hands that Mark Stone has, doesn't have the defense or attention to detail or decision making. There's a reason why half of the scouting reports have him as a late first round. He is without a doubt one of the biggest projects in the first round. People are banking on him learning how to skate. I will gladly admit I'm wrong if he doesn't turn into a complete bust but the comparison to Stone is absolutely ridiculous.

Minus the defensive capabilities, ability to skate somewhat, IQ and hands. Matthew Wood is such an extreme and long term project. He has size and he has a shot. That's literally all he has. Weak hands, poor IQ, the worst skating in the draft, very little playmaking ability.
