2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017

If I were NHL GM I would pick OJ 10 times out of 10 over Tkachuk. Megna I agree with you - Chaput I don't, I believe Chaput is a decent NHL player and could be part of bottom 6 on any team. Megna is a curiosity to me as he simply shows nothing in the way of an NHL player so not sure what Canucks see in him. -

What does it exactly mean when someone says this? You going to find a new team to root for? If Glass if available too and they choose him over Vilardi you will now be a fan of another team? I want them to draft Glass over all other than two players who will be long gone. If they don't, I still believe I will follow the team but remain curious what you will do. -

Canucks have had VERY few high first round picks over past 20 years so pretty easy to pick on them not finding superstars. Bourdon could have really been something, for example, but that is sadly never to be known. Picking in the teens to 20s is a lottery in many ways. I think given the cycle of things, they have some high picks for a season or three to come and then you can judge. The OJ pick is a beauty - if you are a fan you will like that pick for years to come. Boeser looks like he could be a steal. Give it time but first round it tough to judge them recently (for a long while actually) as they have only recently got some taste of reasonably high picks and those still take four plus seasons to judge (well, not on CDC where judgment comes immediately ). -

It actually stacks up about average if you compare the last, say, 20 years of Canucks drafting against all other teams balancing out position of picks etc. If you take the time to look at pick position and then number of NHL games, Canucks have done very well (better than most teams) with their mid to later round picks (not as good as say Detroit but still pretty good) but less well than a bunch in terms of earlier rounds. Brutal drafting teams are teams (pathetic is your term) like Oilers who given their draft pick positions over, say, past 10 years (which really skews it all the way back) has been abysmal until just more recently. Understand you want to slam this team but when something is about middle of the pack, "pathetic" isn't really the right term. -

All fair but some anonymous trolling poster saying "a friend of mine who shall go nameless talked to an unnamed friend of this player who says he is partying all summer" does not constitute relevance. It is trollish, mean-spirited and cowardly. All the "official" news on this player paints an entirely different picture but one that apparently doesn't fit with a trollish agenda so you can choose to feed that agenda or not. I choose not to.

Can you please note the source of this reference as it would be an interesting read. Thank you. -
Sneak in and steal Hossa's equipment and put it in LE's locker?

He was taking the chicken to a party and clearly demonstrated irresponsible behaviour. Outrage required. Bust for sure!
-
You know full well why - this player brings out the trolls like no other.

One thing they will need to balance is having too many contracts due at wrong time either soon or in a few seasons. In the CAP ERA, your team needs a balance or it goes into Hawks mode who will be in tough to continually find supporting cast to three or four heavy contracts. Oilers heading there too - that is why historic windows of great teams will be shorter moving forward. What Pens did with (on paper) a very weak D and a bunch of filler outside of their core superstars is impressive. Vegas will have a nice looking team on paper after this weekend but I suspect it won't be the "dynasty" that some people think as they will be smart enough to understand the balance needed. For what was termed a "weak draft" a year ago and beyond has become one of the most intriguing in years. -

Friday will be interesting - in some ways good to be fifth for Canucks as prior choices will make their choice easier to some degree. Having another pick before 15 or so would be great but not sure that is in the cards this year. -

I would take Glass from number 3 on - this is one player other than the top 2 that oozes having a long and successful pro career. He already looks and plays like a pro. -
I found some old video of Lumme in a Canuck uniform (a very ugly uniform) and he is VERY similar to OJ in how they look up the ice all the time and even the first push off move. Lumme was a very good player I would think (I am a little young to know for sure) but it appears he had an excellent NHL career. Not saying any bearing on OJ but the similarities when pointed out to me were remarkable. Any of your older types remember Lumme and able to comment?

Unless he goes to Russia at end of season......

The post above yours. -
Did you think very hard before you posted this? How Gubby looked here with one hand has absolutely nothing to do with how he played in Florida. I think that his former coach would have a better perspective on what he brought and Gallant said losing him was the single biggest reason the season went south - not the he "didn't look good playing in Vancouver with one arm". Unlike yourself, I think he had a massive contribution to the positive growth the Panthers were making and as a Panther fan, I was very upset at the lopsided trade made with Vancouver as I don't think McCann is a legitimate NHL player as he doesn't have the frame to ever fill out. Further, I think a healthy full season of this guy will have Vancouver fans falling over themselves happy with how hard he plays, how he supports his teammates and how often the opposition seemingly hate seeing him on the ice. Perhaps some advanced stats show that he doesn't turn left fast enough when pucks above 3" come in from a southerly direction, or whatever metric some of you like, but I can say where it really matters on the ice and in the room, this guy is a beast. Have fun with stats and your negative outlook!

Penguins also had great goaltending and amazing help from zebras. One could argue stripes were more important for them in final two games than Malkin. -
Rodin looked really good when he played and that was on one leg essentially. If he truly is healed and ready for the season, hard to see him not being NHL material and a nice piece for Vancouver either as part of the team or someone to use in an asset swap.

All you do is whine about no moves and then propose trading Tanev for a top 3 pick or Gubby for another first round pick. You cannot make those trades as no one will do that as the other 30 GMs have no vested interest in making crap trades to improve the Canucks at the expense of their own teams. Realistically, the Canucks have very few trading assets other than picks and prospects if you consider Horvat untouchable. No one is coming off a statistically unusually great year that may lure a team into overpaying. What they do have is a bunch of picks in a draft that a 30th pick could be as good as a 10th and they finally have a semblance of a prospect pool. The management team will be doing a very positive and proactive job with your team if they don't screw with that and add to it his draft year and next and if they can move a veteran or three the best timing would be TDL next season when value in return likely highest. What you call proposals = things no other GM will do. What you call "inaction" is what I see your team finally doing, something positive in their actions to turn the ship around much quicker than could otherwise be the case. Stay negative or perhaps find another team to root for because I think this particular team seemingly is finally getting it and won't just make a bunch of crap trades. -

OK, give an example of a "move" that they can make with this group. It is NOT a ten year rebuild what the can do from here as the plan seems to be but as you seem so despondent re. drafting and developing prospects, pray tell what older assets you would trade and what they would provide in return for your team. -

If you are rebuild mode, you DON'T make a bunch of crap trades and you USE all your own draft picks. IF you can make trades to improve your number of picks or can obtain prospects, you make those deals BUT all other 30 teams are trying to do similar things. If the Canucks use their picks and do not make any stupid trades, that is not "doing nothing", it is actually pretty active and precisely how you rebuild. "Your" management team as you keep calling it, is finally on the right track and you seem to be criticizing them for not making some of the knee jerk moves that other teams have done and kept themselves mediocre versus embracing an actual rebuild. You cannot have it both ways.
