Personally rather VAN went for Connolly than Kane. Less risk salary wise and less to acquire. Love to get E. Kane but loosing top assets for Kane while knowing VAN could really use those ELCs to maximize cap could end up as a double whammy. It's a bigger risk than it looks on the surface. Probably involves dealing another contract of equal $ value away. ie buyout Booth in the offseason.

Too Early to call Kassian a dissapointment?
Canada Hockey Place replied to Go Go Canucks Go's topic in Canucks Talk
He was drafted just after guys like Brayden Schenn, Glennie, Kadri, Paajarvi-Svensson... ahead of Holland, Leblanc, Kreider, Josefson. I can't see how his development would be considered anything less than average. IMO it's looking good. -
Play Weber.

Surely the floodgates will open now. Seriously, can we please open the floodgates now?

Too bad, I really liked the Rennie choice. I fear the next coach will be a safer choice; Sigi Schmid or a Bob Bradley type. Which isn't a bad thing I guess. Mattocks... What a joke. How do play with unselfish, class players like YP Lee and end up so ungrateful and full of yourself? -

Also think that there is a unrealistic expectation on the return in a trade. 2 examples. 1. Iginla was traded for 2013 1st (28th) Klimchuk + prospects K. Agostino & Hanoski. 2. Hossa & Dupius for Armstrong, Christensen, Esposito and 2008 1st (29th) Leveille. I can't think of a similar trade that returned more. Maybe I'm forgetting. Can anyone provide an example of a better return?

Sure. And I'm a diehard Nickleback fan. I'm eagerly anticipating a new album so i can trash it. Even before listening to it. That's how dedicated I am.

Tanev has turned out really good. Basically skipped the AHL to make it onto a very good team. He's done more than most prospects his age since the draft. Tanev probably would have been drafted in 2007. It's hard to pick 10 D better than Tanev from that draft. eg VAN picked Taylor Ellington 33rd overall. And even less RHD. Tanev should have been an off-season priority. Should have been settled before signing Weber, Richardson, Sestito. At the very least right after the Ballard buy-out. As a RFA I can't imaging he's asking for that much. The difference must be in term. If VAN wanted Tanev on a longer term. They should have got it done sooner. They missed the boat. And now he has offers from the KHL (I say half-jokingly). I'm assuming all he and his agent want is a shorter contract. So he get a big contract sooner. IMHO if anyone deserves to get paid, it's the undrafted guy who earned a spot.
-
Tanev is a pretty important signing for VAN. But with 4 D making over $4.5m, they need cheaper options on the bottom. He is restricted so I believe there is a minimum offer. I'd bet that's the offer. Or else VAN takes it's chances with Weber and Corrado. Since Tanev would be quite valuable in a trade given his position, age and experience.

(Article)NHL goalie rankings: Is Luongo still elite?
Canada Hockey Place replied to naslund.is.king's topic in Canucks Talk
Is Luongo still elite? He stole the starting spot away from a pretty good goalie. The worst thing about Luongo is people won't shut-up about Luongo. Hockey Canada seems to trust him. Other NHL teams seem to dislike playing against him. Overall stats are comparable to other current elite goalies. So it's hard to argue otherwise. But bottom line = who cares. Are the Sedin's tough enough? Is Kesler durable enough? Is Luongo elite? etc....... One 1 thing will stop those questions being asked. -

I still believe Don Hay is good choice too. I hope he is being considered. http://blogs.theprovince.com/2013/05/23/could-longtime-giants-bench-boss-don-hay-be-a-fit-with-a-new-canucks-staff-its-worth-pondering/ http://www2.canada.com/theprovince/columnists/story.html?id=1a534688-286c-4ddc-b538-1ae644eda7d2 -

How about Dale Hunter? He coached WAS over BOS last season. Didn't get a cup as a player. Good chance in VAN. -

I'd probably go with Boucher as a 1yr transition coach. Personally, I think the Canucks waited way too long to change coaches and will leave this team in a really tough spot. Not only is it going to be a tough job for the new coach. I predict it's going to be a tough job to convince a coach to come here. Here's what I mean... A new coach in VAN will be expected to make the playoffs(in the new aligned Division), compete in the playoffs with anything less than the 2nd round considered disappointing while taking into consideration that Henrik and Daniel Sedin are in the last year of their deal. Comparatively, BUF for example without Ruff will probably have less immediate expectations and a deeper focus on development. Even though Vanek and Miller are in their last year of contract, they don't seem to have the same urgency to win now and they have the option to trade them as rentals. Add to that Gillis extended Vigneault just last season, so the commitment to a new coach is probably not going to be a long term deal. All the other teams looking for coaches can probably commit. Which leads to the question, who would take the Vancouver job? My guess is Boucher. -

Kekuta Manneh is a quick learner. -
Garrison was signed for size and versatility. Not just a offensive replacement. For example last season, Alberts/Rome would dress instead of Ballard when size was needed. With Garrison in the lineup Ballard has been able to get more regular minutes.

I don't think over hyped, but I do think over exposed. The rest of the D haven't made it an easy transition. Hamhuis-Bieksa should be the rock on this team right now. The team is trying to pick up where they left off from previous seasons but that's asking a lot of Garrison to simply fill-in for Salo, Salo was a major part of this team. Decisions like splitting the pairings on the PK last night, presumably to get one of Edler/Garrison to clear the crease, is what is messing things up. Keep it simple until the team gets settled in. Until then, use Hamhuis-Bieksa as the 1st pairing. I really don't see the point in experimenting with the D so much. It's like they do just because they can.

I agree with what you're saying about the press for the Timbers game. But not so much about "history". Actually, just looking for an excuse to post this. Biggest game IMO because it's against the Cosmos and because of the shoot-out. -

[Signing] Justin Schultz to Oilers
Canada Hockey Place replied to Strombone1's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Great moves by EDM to get him. Schultz just fits the best in EDM and their young core, they wanted him more, they got him. And it's close to home for Schultz. So it make a lot of sense. And. Ugh. Free agents are free to sign wherever they want. It's a pretty simple concept. People who don't understand that and then start making up stuff so they can justify some self-fabricated hate towards any player who choses another team are just.... well obviously haven't been following this or any sport for that long. To those people, please for the love of hockey, shut the hell up. You are just confirming your ignorance. -

Nothing against Demirtt but he makes double what everyone else on "D" does, and has barley played.
