Students have protested for decades. On a lot of the same issues. It's only recently we've seen counter positions such as opposing environmental movements, gender equality, white supremacy and countless more. Positions which were a few decades ago pretty universally accepted as the hallmarks of a free, democratic society now have opposition. The opposite was generally seen as Authoritarian, like Soviet era Russia, East Germany, and Mao era China. In the past people who opposed these positions were silent. But with the anonymity of the internet we see there were a lot more than everyone thought. A lot of it is argued by this idea that everything is over Politically Correct. But anyone who sees the real world can see the real state of the environment, gender equality, etc...

So South Korea bought some F-35 fighter jets - https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/asia/south-korea-displays-f-35-stealth-jets-seen-by-the-north-as-a-threat-11958078 North Korea saw that as a threat. Then hours after agreeing with the US to talk Friday, they fired 2 missiles. One may have been from a submarine. - https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-49902182

Trade war between Korean and Japan is escalating into consumerism. Some South Korean gas stations are refusing to refuel Japanese cars in the latest escalation of the two countries' new trade war. https://www.businessinsider.com/south-korea-japan-trade-war-gas-stations-decades-long-tensions-2019-7 Also "Butt Detective: The Movie," a Japanese anime film based on a series popular in South Korea, also suffered at the box office after its July 11 release. So that means we've officially reached the "Ass" part from the movie Idiocracy.

Time for the Calgary Stampede to Evolve... ?
Canada Hockey Place replied to kingofsurrey's topic in Off-Topic General
Sad about the horses but I'm sure they could learn from it and improve the situation. Overall I feel the Stampede is just Old West cosplay. I don't see anything wrong with it. It should be a fun, lost in time experience. I know a lot of people around the world who see it as a very Canadian thing. But a lot of it is modeled more on the American Old West than Canadian ranchers or farmers. I guess it's a part of Canadian heritage. But so is fur trapping. Not sure I'd support a fur trapping festival. -
One of these things is not like the others. But probably hurts the same.

Apparently 31 degrees yesterday. 24 today. 1 freak thunderstorm. Pretty cool watching this truck power through it.

Always hated the idiom "don't throw the baby out with the bath water". But it's how some people think these days. Democracy has flaws, so let's listen to a dictator. It's not that liberalism or political correctness isn't over the line, of course it is. It is because of slow learners who need a sign to tell them not to touch fire. Apparently we live in a world where you need to tell people Nazis are bad, people are equal, don't abuse women, not to lock up kids, etc...

"He found convincing evidence that climate change was not leading to higher rates of weather-related damages worldwide, once you correct for increasing population and wealth." How the hell do you "correct for increasing population and wealth" when increasing population and greed are the biggest contributing factors?

Venezuelan Presidency Dispute, 2019
Canada Hockey Place replied to thejazz97's topic in Off-Topic General
I really sympathize with Venezuela but I think we all know how bad the US has been to South/Central America. It helps to see it as a list sometimes because there's a lot. Some of the most notable U.S. interventions in Latin America: -
I think Canada should take the garbage back (like South Korea did) but should also stop all business with the Philippines as long as Duterte remains. More than 100 container vans of garbage arrived in the Philippines between 2013 to 2014. The materials involved were considered "household" waste and subject to different rules. The party accepting the garbage gave the consent necessary under these rules, took their profits and the company did not deal with the garbage for 5 years. In 2016, Canada amended its regulations around hazardous waste shipments to prevent such events from happening again, In 2017, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his country was committed to addressing the issue of waste from Canada that was shipped to the Philippines. https://www.philstar.com/headlines/2019/04/24/1912211/canada-working-philippines-timely-resolution-waste-issue Canada has acted. Duterte just threatens and does nothing.

BC Government has Powerex (BC Hydro). They sell our surplus to California through the Energy Imbalance Market. The total number of electric cars in California just hit 10% last year. Coal burning energy plants are and will continue to decline. Leaving the still inconsistent solar and wind options as the primary sources. Oil is highly competitive. Alberta will always be at the mercy of the US and OPEC. The government subsides Alberta when the price per barrel is below profitable. When the price per barrel is profitable, at around the price right now, we pay the highest prices for it in North America. Of course Alberta needs to continue oil production to exist. They chose to put all the eggs in one basket. But the rest of Canada doesn't. The rest of Canada would potentially benefit if the US switched off oil to electricity or nuclear. Do the math.

To be honest I thought there was more to this "scandal" when it first broke but I think it's just been slow in news lately so the Canadian media has been overly fixated. The more I hear though, the more I think Ms. Wilson Raybould wasn't a good fit with the Liberals. Simplistically speaking the Liberals have always been fence sitters. To approach this as such a black or white moral issue doesn't help anyone (both business and Canada) and is not a traditional Liberal way of looking at things. Her intentions were honourable. But her actions were counter productive and her motives puzzling.

In my view both the PM and Ms Wilson-Raybould come across reasonable to me. Especially commend the later for coming forward against her own party. Overall I think it's a good thing to bring attention to. It needs to be open. And if this continues as a pattern, the voter should let the government know this October. However the most illuminating thing about this ordeal to me is the conduct of Andrew Scheer. Today, calling on the PM to resign. Displaying all the opposite qualities wanted in a level-headed, rational leader. It's no wonder he appeals to people who share the same quality.
