  1. Funny how you changed your stance from "Bedard" and "the one guy" to "drafting in the top 3". "A player like that" has suddenly expanded outward . We don't yet know how these players will be in the NHL...we can guess, based on what we see happening but one guy doesn't make a team. Just ask Edmonton about that. The Oilers had top picks....it doesn't equate to instant success as some here claim. The team surrounding that golden ticket also matters and we're seeing some changes and good things that are important in a big picture way. Unless you're scrapping the entire team and starting over, you have to consider what's happening with them in a good or bad way. And it's good to see them figuring it out. It is a team game and by thinking that "one" guy will fix things rather than understanding that all guys need to fix it is short-sighted. People that moan about "same ol'" aren't watching what's unfolding. The past has jaded them but players are individuals and this group seems to be responding well to a new coach and systems that are helping them. There have been additions (and subtractions) to the roster that freshen it and make is something different than "same ol". How do you pin that history on new arrivals? They're not chopped liver who need a saviour ... they are going to be important pieces also. The other thing is that success somewhere doesn't automatically guarantee success in the NHL as players have to adjust. Lafreniere's a good example of how it can take time and not just instantly happen as they slide in. Number 1 picks are human beings so don't set the bar at perfection. I recall him actually being benched recently. A number one pick ends after the draft at which point that player is now in the NHL and has to re-establish himself. It's a step up. I do agree that top picks are important and we've squandered opportunities....but the point is to work on the team as well as add important pieces through the draft. Not just count on the draft to magically fix things. The team is improving and that matters. We're allowed to be happy about that because some of the pieces in place are pretty significant and worth considering in the here and now. When the team is in a skid it doesn't help Petey or Quinn because the mental game can become a factor and settle in. We're going to need them, too...not just the shiny new toys we're setting our sites on. "A chance". That's what you're taking in a draft, even with Bedards in the mix. The chance of us landing him are very low and no, you don't just focus solely on that without considering the repercussions of losing on the other players who also matter. But I've said it enough in response to you. If you choose to ignore this for a "long term plan" it's a short sighted view.
  2. "Sacrifice a piece" is quite different than losing out and an entire team being a dumpster fire in order to get "a" shiny new piece. That doesn't seem like a great plan. Addition by subtraction. I'm all for it if it happens organically...they tried and it wasn't to be. But if they're changing their ways under a new coach who's instilling some structure and making them work their asses off. If they're starting to push back and not be so "easy to play against". If they're adding pieces that are pretty impressive so far (Kuz anyone?). Then that counts too. Some seem to think that it's one or the other...but it's actually best if it's a little of both. We don't have to pick a side...we can see that things are unfolding in a more favourable way while we also hope for a good pick. Whatever will be will be because we don't control it. So we're here for the ride and allowed to enjoy some of it. It doesn't have to be constant pain and misery. "Smart strategic moves". Keeping the team motivated and happy is part of that. Petey, Quinn, Demko, Miller, Kuz, etc.. It's about them, not us. Overplaying players is partly because they're young and want to play. Putting players in cold after they've sat risks injury as much as anything else. These players don't want to sit. And their views are pretty important.
  3. So be honest here. If the team was totally losing out. We suck completely and Tocchet makes no difference at all. You think one unproven rookie...even of star calibre....will change things? Or do you consider that maybe the "culture" that is so important is changing? That even WITH a solid pick, that part also matters too? Or we should just be awful and wait for one guy to save the day? While Petey and Quinn and Demko just go down the tubes to suit the tankers? Because losing all the time has a very negative impact and has them overthinking and possibly changing their games. Maybe even wanting out (heard Quinn?). So be careful what you wish for. It may not be without consequences and you may be sacrificing as much as you're trying to gain. Don't sell these guys short...it's garbage to do so. They don't need a superman, they need to build their foundation and they're doing that. I don't deny that it's not "complete" yet and that this draft offers some great pieces that we could really use. But not at any expense.
  4. That last line is ridiculous. No, that's not the goal. But if that's how you sell your point, have at 'er.
  5. I'm going to call it the Willy Wonka syndrome. Dreams of a golden ticket that will instantly change everything. When really, it's the team that has to bring about change (and they are). So people overlooking the fact that they: 1. have Demko back in form 2. have a coach whipping them into shape and establishing structure 3. have new players in the line up who are pretty damn exciting (but these people overlook them for some reason) 4. are showing grit and have each other's backs (something fairly new) Matters. It's like kids waiting for Santa to deliver that one prized gift that they're totally fixated on.
  6. Other teams are easing up? Hardly. That's where you lost me.
  7. So if we lose out and we get....ONE guy. That makes things so much brighter? An unproven NHL'er at that? I'd prefer a balance where the guys in place are happy, confident, building momentum and chemistry. New coach has them building a solid foundation .... and perhaps they add a piece as well. Not putting all the eggs in one basket. It's common sense to not overlook what losing does to a roster. Even that ONE pick won't pick up all the pieces in that.
  8. This. Life is what we make it. I watch hockey to watch...hockey. Because I love it. Not just for the results which, apparently are only acceptable if they're losses. I take whatever comes at this point. But winning is good for the guys in the room and that matters. Not just the guys not in the room who may or may not get us there. It's all uncertain so success is important in some aspects.
  9. Thing is, some of these guys just rinse/repeat...exactly what they're posting about. They have options. Has anyone told them?
  10. Second time tonight. Earlier, too...when Juice wanted to talk about Edler (even though he's not a Canuck...to Juice he always will be). It's garbage. They don't deserve us.
  11. Winning's fun though. It's sort of the point. You don't get to the finish line without winning and so we're happy our team is turning things around. We have some new players, haven't you noticed? And a new coach. Matters. Are you Drance?
  12. Where the hell's JT? They said he'd be on one of the Sportsnet channels....LIES
  13. Hits 32-17 Canucks Thatta boys JT shows them what's up.
