  1. I think maybe, at least at times, you're misreading the body language. Because you've bought in. He's often gassed...he plays a tough game out there. So we're not discussing JT anymore? Awesome.
  2. But you, yourself, have said he made adjustments since the start of the year. So in seeing him reel in that aspect (the "tantrums" as you called them) why wouldn't he be captain material? You're using examples of what he's done in the past but, in the next breath to save yourself, you're back pedalling. Pick a side don't flip flop to make it work. Giving up on plays talks of the here and now but that isn't the case and you seem to recognize that. So don't use it like it fits in an argument against him being captain.
  3. OMG, get over it. "Temper tantrums" is what people use to embellish what most hockey players do at times...show frustration. Slam a gate, smash a stick or drop an f bomb. Happens in hockey but here we are offended by it and it's held against our players. It's ridiculous. You have to let go of what he's done and focus on what he's doing. Matters. All of our players have had "moments" (including Petey). But for some reason JT's a villain to some and they can't let go of that regardless of how he proves himself. He's changing his ways and some here need to go along with that as well. Give credit where it's due and don't stay stuck somewhere in the past.
  4. People buy into that drama aspect, but you have to be realistic. If teams aren't willing to do business with a guy based on that guy, they're not doing their due diligence. It's about doing business with anyone who has something worth considering. The rest of the stuff is the soap opera narrative that we have to quit putting so much weight on. Sells headlines but it isn't often the full "story". I mean, he managed to make 30+ trades while he was here so I'm not sure this is true.
  5. Wrong. Captain is a weight more suited for JT to carry than Petey. Petey is our superstar...let him quietly go about his business. If you go to games (I do), you'll see the guy directing traffic before every face off. If you go to events (or watch them online), you'll see the "spokesman" for the team in many regards. Petey's uncomfortable in that role...don't force him into something that he really doesn't need to think about. It's just not his gig...he's more introverted and JT's definitely the guy who can speak on behalf of the group. And does. Who was the one stepping in front of the bus for the team when they were being rushed back to practice, etc. during COVID? JT. If you're a "leader on the team" you're a captain. He very much is that.
  6. My point was mostly I don't want that to be the "go to". When someone does something, to look for a call as the reaction. A little more "I'll take care of my business" and less reliance on "fair". Because we've been burned in the past by that. Especially with our PK doing what they're doing. I want to shed the "easy to play against" rep we've had. I don't mean every play or go out there looking to fight. But to have the instinct to react.
  7. I agree, but we'll have to see how it plays out. Good on paper only takes us so far. Hopeful, fingers crossed.
  8. So if that applies to the d corp, not the forwards as well? If we're blaming them for d issues, do we not also factor this in for them?
  9. But the turning/looking for the ref part is what we need to shed. They ain't helping us. But I do like that he turned to face him...points for that.
  10. And I respect that. I accept that for a huge return it might have made sense (for some). It didn't for me because we've been a soft team for too long and I saw a change with him in the line up. That "culture" thing we hear about. Sure, offensive to some but put that out on the ice and it works. I do get the whole timeline and that end of the argument...I just don't think you can predict how a player will fall off/decline, especially if they're fit and lead a healthy lifestyle. 30 isn't 80 but some treat it as such. Time will tell and that's a high price to pay if he does start to Loui. I just don't know that he will to the extent that he'll be a total liability. But, like others, I don't have a crystal ball so it's totally possible. His game is one that doesn't rely so much on out of the gates speed and agility...so I also factor that in.
  11. So: when we criticize the d it's "vitriol". when we criticize the refs...we don't know/haven't played. They have it hard. But...when it's JT and you're criticizing him it's valid and warranted? That seems fair. Also: when you say "This is the team I thought we were going to see this season" that's total bs. You thought JT was gone...so you can't pencil him into what you saw and the lineup that's producing now. I try to avoid responding but the quotes are there...so.
  12. I don't like throwing our players under the bus and I am giving OEL and Myers a chance. But, if there was a chance we could unload either of them, where do we sign? I've seen enough to take a pass on them and try something new. Myers HAS been better lately/under Tocchet so I'd like to see more of that. Especially with the physicality...I'd rather him take a guy out with his body than try to "interrupt" a play by sliding into home or making a goal line save. We'll see...time will tell I guess.
  13. This is the part I'm tired of. Sure, he turned to him but I never saw him unleash. Oh well, made him flinch counts for some.
  14. People are conveniently glancing over that part. Doesn't fit their argument.
  15. Oh so now you're applying psychology to it. Nope. The "how many other reasons" are that JT's a good player who wants to win and is ultra competitive. He's shown that. What "you thought" is your own deal....what he is on the ice is what we're discussing. If he has the capacity to turn it off and then on for a contract year...at least he's capable of turning it on. But his personality doesn't seem to be what you think it is...he's shown he just hates losing and that generally drives a person. Not the type to settle for "oh well, good enough". It's all good. No point in me spelling it out for those who can't see it for whatever reason.
  16. Anyhow, we all know how I feel by now. Thing is...if we're going to hold some player's feet to the fire, it seems only fair to apply that to everyone. And OEL and Myers are not exempt in that...no matter what their "reasons" are, they are the guys paid to defend. And if our defense is struggling (even due to coaching/lack of structure) these are not guys new to the game. They should know how to play by now and not get "dragged down" by others' deficiencies on d. They should be able to cover for them (to some degree). I think our problems on d were the biggest problems we had. And...goaltending. Obviously, with Demko being back and up to form, it matters.
  17. What about before the start of this season? I explained "why" I let him off the hook. Because he dragged the team along last year and that counts (too). He played anything but "like LE" and I don't buy that part. He had momentary lapses but LE was nothing like JT.
  18. The guy who is stuck on JT getting moved is talking about scapegoating. The same guy who says "refs have it hard" and OEL and Myers aren't responsible for our struggles on d. Excuses and letting some off the hook while others are hung from it. JT has been stawn's scapegoat for some time...which is where this "it's the forward's fault" comes in. D gets a pass for some reason. It supports his narrative. People who have claimed to know the game better than everyone get stuck on a stance at times and don't ever budge from it. But the proof's often in the pudding (as they say).
  19. JT was good before he had his blunders this year and that was mostly why I exercised patience with him. I saw what he was and had faith that he'd be that again and know that players sometimes do have highs and lows. Like when Petey was struggling and people were dumping on him. We need grit and a bit of surliness and JT brings that and I saw that edge to him. It had to be channeled a bit better, but it was there and that matters to me. I'm tired of a "soft" team and guys who get fired up and will direct that on the ice are the players I want on the team. No passiveness. It doesn't have to be an outward expression of such....but I want guys who'll slam other guys into the boards when we're batting in games. Not gently try to remove the puck from their sticks. I do understand that sometimes that pulls people out of position and can put them behind a step, but it also can set the tone in a game. We're not afraid to engage. Plus, he produces and his points tell that story. He also sets others up quite nicely and their points come through him so even when he's being a grumpy gus, there's something there. Myers, at least, has shown that capability (even if the refs have stifled it to some degree). With Myers and OEL, they've had a good sample size but I just don't think they're bringing it like they should be for high paid vets. You can't deny that JT produces and while Tocchet has refined JT's game, he was quite capable prior to Tocchet's arrival (when he had his 99 point season). So the foundation was there to work from. I wonder how much OEL is just more accepting of mediocre than JT is and will settle in and be ok with less than great. I think Myers has a bit more drive than I've seen from OEL. The attitude, energy and work ethic matters to me. I want to believe in OEL and will give more time to decide....but he's a top paid player who hasn't really performed as such. For whatever reason. JT has.
  20. No, it's dumb to think this d corp is just fine...it's not. Sure, Tocchet has helped and the forwards playing a bit differently factors in. But Myers standing beside the goal acting like a back up goaltender and also sliding all over the ice on his belly wasn't the forward's fault. It was his scrambly, chaotic ways. OEL is also not missed because his replacement(s) are totally outplaying him. That's on him. You can't predict that we'd be better with him in the lineup....we were not. And you can't keep giving free passes to those who aren't performing with excuses for why that is. Refs, our defense, etc. It's always someone else's fault but there's no accountability in that.
