  1. You’re right in that it’s way too late in the game to be drafting support pieces for the current roster. The only exemption I’d have would be we need another middle 6 C in the system beyond Raty - Miller’s 30 years old and will almost certainly need to switch to the wing part way through his contract. That’s a piece we can draft now that might safely be ready when we need it. A defenceman for Hughes will always be 2-3 years too late.
  2. I think we’re guaranteed one of those will be on the board and they’ll immediately become our best prospect since Hughes. Would you be upset if we swerved for, say, Benson or ASP instead? I don’t know enough to get upset about it but I’ll be disappointed if we don’t get a bigger bodied player considering they’ll almost be guaranteed to be on the board.
  3. I actually think a quality top 6 C is harder to find than a top 4 d-man - especially a lefty. All things being even (and I know they aren’t - but I’m also not a scout) I take the C. That’s what this draft is known for and we’d be wise to lean into it. Danielson or Dvorsky for me but I’d warm up to Willander or Simashev pretty quick.
  4. Simashev is super intriguing but could he still be there if we trade down? If we stick at 11 I still hope we go C if Reinbacher is off the board as expected. Pronman at the athletic is super high on Danielson but even then I was surprised to see him ranked 6 for upside: FWIW Simashev was 17 and Willander was 16: Edit: Oliver Moore at 21 but then gets compared to a slightly less skilled Tim Stutzle… goes to show some of the potential firepower in this draft.
  5. Things are starting to heat up around the league. Hopefully Allvin can make something happen.
  6. I’ll still maintain that I’d like to see Allvin find *one* splashier acquisition but I’d be happy with that next year if nothing is available. None of those guys will likely come too expensive or with a lot of term so we can keep looking next offseason. With the differing reports of how much cap we have that looks 100% doable as well - might actually leave some room. This lineup wouldn’t be considered contenders for the cup, but sure looks better defensively / on the PK and every line can score. Good size on the back end if a little small up front. I’d watch this team.
  7. How on earth are they going to move Krug? And how does the trade get this far without talking to him? Productive enough player but he’s 32 and on the hook for 4 x 6.5 mil. In a world of tightwad GMs that alone is a monumental move.
  8. I think it’s easy to look at this roster as a giant disaster and second guess all the moves (I’ve done it too) due to the big picture results.. But we need to remember last season’s flop was due to historically bad goaltending, relying on a broken down OEL-Myers to be the shut down pairing and the forwards were all cherry picking trying to pad their stats - led by the captain. There’s also a stink in the locker room that I’m hoping Tocchet, Foote and Gonchar can clean out. Moving on from the head coach and captain is a fairly major *change* and let’s hope it’s a good one. I’m past giving the team the benefit of the doubt - they need to prove they can play up to their potential. But the potential is still there, assuming we pick up a piece or two this offseason.
  9. I’m surprised at how much people think Dumba is going to get. This has him in the 4s and I’ve seen as high as 6 mil projected for him. I’d look at him for around 3 mil on a shorter deal but only after exhausting Mayfield, Peeke and Schenn. Edit: while we’re contemplating pillaging the Bruins, Connor Clifton might be a nice guy to snag as well if we can’t get a bigger body to play with Hughes.
  10. It’s nothing crazy, just a 1 x 3 mil commitment for a big body (6’4 210) defensive-defenceman LD - who had the 2nd highest TOI on their PK a few seconds behind Carlo. Shouldn’t cost anything to pick up, either. I think they might need to exhaust splashier acquisitions first but it’s just a nice easy piece that makes a lot of sense. Probably more of a bottom pairing guy but could play with Hronek in a pinch.
  11. Drance has me sold on Forbort. I really wouldn’t mind getting him AND Soucy if we can’t land a RD. Lots of opportunity to really rebuild the D into a much tougher group - but that can still play.
  12. Seeing what players are going for in trade makes sense why we bought our OEL and haven’t been able to move on a winger. Bodes well for our ability to find a D via trade. Although if I were Allvin I’d be calling Dubas to take Granlund full freight with the 14OA attached for a 3rd.
  13. I think this coaching staff fits well with Podkolzin. He seems like a hard hat and lunch pail type of player so hope he responds well.
  14. I understand the cap space would be valuable but I still think keeping Garland isn’t some horrible sentence. Besides Kuzmenko he’s probably been our best winger since we acquired him despite not really finding a home in the lineup. Having him either with Miller on the 2nd line or with whoever we land at 3C always makes the lineup look better in my eyes. He drives offence 5v5, plays scrappy, back checks and draws penalties. If he were bigger he’d be a franchise winger and I never really watch a game thinking we’re losing because he’s getting tossed around.
  15. I was high on Boldy that year but I agree - definitely not giving up on Pods.
  16. Lots going on. Wonder if Allvin gets into the action - though I have a gut feeling that if he has a major play it’ll be at the draft so maybe just something small.
  17. We don’t really need Durzi but that seems like a nice price for Arizona.
  18. I like Danielson but this made me think of old Cole “McLegend Killer” Cassels
  19. I hear you - and actually a lot of decent bargain fits at C for cheaper. I’m also not sure about Johansen’s two way game and he doesn’t kill penalties. I think Colorado is going to use him as a 2C not the matchup 3C we need. Would have loved Johansen’s size and the fact he’s a good face off righty, though. Oh well!
  20. I’m really warming up to the idea of a trade like this - probably just taking on the player with maybe a later pick even rather than sending anything back. Trading for Edmundson or maybe Forbort out of Boston are both nice ways to add some veteran size on the back end for reasonable AAV and without the risk of a multi-year deal. Would still be happy with one UFA D signing in addition to, but this seems like a smart play for our management.
  21. I was hoping we’d make a similar move for Johansen. 4 mil is pricey for a 3C I guess but there’s a lot of upside to Johansen and he could very well tick all the boxes.
  22. I think I can see Willander ahead of Moore or Danielson (I’d be fine with any of those 3) but, yeah, leaving Dvorsky on the board would sting.
  23. Not sure how I’d feel us going Willander over Dvorsky. Or Moore. Or Danielson. If the top 10 goes C heavy let’s pivot to D but if not, I hope we take one of the C’s. Edit: I feel like you can actually find 2nd pair D in FA/Trade a little easier than even 2nd line C. Plus, D usually last a little longer age-wise so it’s a bit less risky signing them at that UFA range. Just my 0.02.
  24. This is a major perk of the 11OA - pretty much guarantees a guy we’d love to have. Drop down just a few spots and there’s some nice wingers but you start losing some of the upside / key position. I know scouting reports are usually glowing but the top of this draft all seem to be fairly wart-free beyond, “ Russian” and “might not be a 1st liner / top pairing player.” Just clean, solid prospects.
  25. Adding a bunch of players to the market where teams are already desperate might actually help us out considering the OEL buyout. There will be bargains That said, we’re likely still trying to sell a winger so this might hurt us there unless Calgary is interested.
