Would be a pretty crazy coup if we landed Michkov. I’ve been trying to keep my hopes down on him. If we deal with Philly and he’s gone, that would still leave Reinbacher, Leonard or Dvorsky on the board. Would be a pretty nice swaperoo.

[Buyout] Oliver Ekman-Larsson

I just need to remind myself once in awhile not every spot is going to be filled with the best piece available. It sure gets tempting to hope we land 3 hulking defencemen and say, Bjugstad. But I think we’re more likely and better off targeting one really good mid/long term fit and some low maintenance place holders. -

Hughes - Mayfield/Peeke/Holl/Schenn Soucy/Graves/Forbort - Hronek ??? - Myers We could certainly have a *bigger* defence next year. But to do this plus sign a 3C it’ll likely require paying to offload a winger to the Blackhawks -
Athletic just dropped a “teams that should trade for Brock Boeser” piece - it’s just some summer fodder but there’s people out there looking to buy low on the guy. While PA isn’t looking to move him, you know there’s people around the league window shopping if not kicking the tires just yet. Im happy to keep Brock for the same reasons other teams might be interested. But same goes for Garland even though he’s the guy PA seems to want to move on from. Could be a huge summer.

Pretty sure I read we’re happy to take Michkov if he drops but we don’t really expect him to be there. As much as I’d rather go C or D id be pretty excited with that - what a coup.

Yeah, and Canucks fans we should brace for the inevitability of him having a pretty good season next year. -

I was just thinking about that. Under Benning we’d probably already know what he was about to do. This group keeps things nice and tight to their chest. -

I think the question with Hronek isn’t, “did he play awesome last year” it’s “is that who he is now.” Because, if last season was his “arrival” we absolutely landed a first pair caliber player. But whiles been good, I dont think he’s been that guy his whole career. -
[signing] Monahan re-signs with Canadiens.
ilduce39 replied to qwijibo's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Montreal got a 1st for taking him on. Wonder if we could get something similar taking on Johansen. Maybe Johansen + Foote or a 2nd in exhange for Beauvillier. Only thing is Nashville isn’t desperate for cap space so might not be willing to give up futures even for a bad contract they’re content to sit on. -
Latest I’ve heard is we won’t be qualifying Bear at 2.2 or whatever but would be open to bringing him back for a lot cheaper - which might be the best bet. If we can get him for about 1 mil on LTIR after the dust settles at the draft / UFA I think that’s a nice bet. Still set up for a cheap deal next year even if he returns to form and a non issue if he doesn’t.

Drance and Harman have me set on Kampf, Suter or Bjugstad. I think this is a hole we can fill in FA (unless we can get a 1st back for taking on Johansen or Granlund) while on D we should pursue a trade before looking at FA.
-
You’re not wrong - and it would take some work without giving up the 11OA. Id like to see us explore moving the 2024 1st or even later. Calgary moved their 2025 1st with Monahan iirc. But let’s be honest - we’d be lucky just to land the UFA list you posted based on it being a competitive league.

I don’t mean to be a wet blanket but while spending our cap on these guys *helps* it also just bogs down the cap space we created with average bottom pairing / bottom 6 players. It’ll help, but really not enough. I do like Soucy and/or Kampf in addition to a trade. But I really hope we try to fill another top 4 D before spending on bottom 6/bottom pairing types.

[Rumour] Canucks interested in Carson Soucy
ilduce39 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I like the way you’re thinking here - Soucy alone does very little to move the needle beyond adding a nice 16-18 minute guy with size. If we really want to take a step forward there needs to be top 4 level player to pair with Hughes or Hronek.. but it’ll cost / take some finesse to pry them away. -

I like Soucy but more as part of a bottom pair, possibly with Bear or someone like him once Myers moves on. -

At the time of the trade, that NYI 1st looked like it was a good bet to slide into unprotected waters next season - with little hope for NY to improve. The 17 is still nice - and I’m sure a lot of fans are still happy with it - but a lot of pundits were buzzing about the chance of it being a top 10 selection next year. I don’t think Hronek is a “#1” but he was playing at a first pair level last year. To me, a #1 has no weakness and/or is playing at such an elite level you can look past a smaller frame. Hronek was close but not quite at that level yet, even breaking out last year. -

David Kampf would really fit the bill at 3C. Feels like we have enough talent on the wings to offset his lack of offence. Drance and Harman liked Pius Suter as well - seems like an upgraded Dries at 5v5 and he can kill penalties as well. A little smaller and less stingy - but with more pop. Both would be major upgrades to our post-Horvst roster and should come at a bargain. Would also love Bjugstad, too. -

In a heartbeat. Can’t see it happening though. -
Can Tyler Myers still become a good defenceman?
ilduce39 replied to brokensticks's topic in Canucks Talk
Signing D men from very good teams can be a pitfall. At least when they’re going from structure to a tire fire. One I think we need to be a little careful of going after Graves who’s played for Colorado and a good New Jersey team. Although I like our chances of tightening up with Tocchet, Foote and Gonchar. -

ilduce39 replied to brokensticks's topic in Canucks Talk
For sure he could look better. He had a good first year, poor 2nd, good 3rd and terrible 4th season with us so far. Even the Twitter stats weirdos would say so. He’s capable - and has played well for us. The one thing that stands out on this graph and matches the eye test is the high level of competition. Myers tends to look a lot better against average or weaker competition. He’s being used in a pseudo shutdown role - which worked 2 seasons ago with a healthy OEL and 4 seasons ago were he played a good chunk with Edler. He’s failed miserably without a guy who can play in his own end though. I get it - your 6 mil d man shouldn’t need to be carried - but he can’t be bought out and he’s going to be hard to trade. We need to find Hughes or Hronek a proper partner and let Myers romp around on the 3rd pair this season. Ideally with a salary castoff from Boston. He’d likely look good enough in that role and at the very least it could juice his stats for a deadline deal. -

I honestly think even if we sign a proven 4-5 vet like Soucy to play regular minutes with Hronek we’re asking for trouble - if we don’t have a proper top 4 partner for Hughes at least. Would be really nice if we had at least one quality match up pair. -
At this point they kind of have to walk away from Bear. Maybe there’s an opportunity to sign him to a cheaper deal and park him on IR as the offseason winds down. As it stands, though, I can’t see him being a priority. Sucks for him and the club, he had a good situation here.

I agree with you 100% - but as a joke (but not joking) we should ALSO try and pry Girard out of Colorado. Push the tipping point between “big” and simply “good” defenceman. Who needs to clear the crease when we have the puck the whole time? You’d have to think a D of Hughes-Makar Girard-Fox Grzylcek-Krug would still flat-out dominate.
