I have some bad news about Jake Virtanen and Olli Juolevi -
That’s totally fair!

As an Italian it pains me to admit this, but Mode being included in that list is like Italy being included in the World War 1 “great powers.” -
No they trade back into the top 15 by moving the 19 for Granlund + the 14OA
-
I agree we need to hunt value deals but this cap space presents an opportunity to add a high value player with less teams in the bidding. We’d be silly not to look at Hanifin, Carlo, Pesce types. Not saying force the move, but that’s where we’ll gain ground. Not with Grzelcyk - even if he’d be a nice add *in addition to* a bigger piece.

The problem with that, I think, is that every team is chasing that value deal. Buying out OEL presents an opportunity to buy where several major players are strapped against the cap (and perhaps even ripe to take a good player from.) I agree this isn’t the offseason to drop a 6x6 on Ryan Graves but it isn’t the offseason to nickel and dime that cap space away either with safe picks. (Not that that’s what you’re saying) added in edit: I think we need to see one high quality player added with this space or it’s a bit of a waste at this point. -

I totally agree with that. However, it feels like we’re moving on from Myers sooner or later so we should be looking to add a bigger body or two if it makes sense. -
I wonder if we could pull something sexy like trading Myers + the 11th to Chicago at 19 but then flip 19 plus Garland to Pittsburgh for the 14, Granlund and bonus parts. Would open up some serious cap, still having us pick relatively high, and put a warm body in the 3C hole.

As a positive, lots of larger players available in UFA / rumoured on the trade block. Adding 1 or 2 to the back end could go a long way. -
Not signing Juulsen OR Burroughs is a bit of a head scratcher as they’ve both put in decent minutes with the club. Not just saying that because I like the local boys - they’re a couple of tough customers who can fill that 4RD spot nicely if nothing else.
-
Right now we’re even lacking a 2LD - but yeah - I agree with the premise. Ideally, Hirose/Wolanin are battling for 4LD where they’ll still get a ton of time this year.
-
Yeah… Part of the reason I didn’t like the OEL trade when it first happened was that we already had an elite PPQB in Hughes ahead of him. I agree - there were times fans even said they’d rather OEL get a look on the top unit because he looked so good there. I liked how this year he switched up his approach and set up a ton of tip-ins rather than shooting to score. It was smart and effective. If he goes to a team looking for a PPQB he could easily make us look silly putting up 40 or so points.
-
Per the various models OEL provided about 5 mil of value in 2021-2022 - which if you thought you were going to get this year you’d take vs his cap hit. The “injured his foot” makes sense for a slow start, but he got worse as the year continued and you’d think as he played himself into shape that would have been the opposite. It’s likely the foot exasperated other issues and he had a bit of a physical cascade body failure - that fits with what we saw real time. There’s always a chance he bounces back this season but as I think about it, I can see why management would bet against it. Again, still not a big fan of the move but it is what it is. If OEL plays terribly next season I think it’s fair to concede this was the right call.
-
I’d say he’s probably out of our price range anyways as Calgary has a lot of time to be patient on the return. With the cap space I hope we take a serious (but not reckless) kick at Graves’ tires while calling Boston about Carlo, Columbus about Peeke and Carolina about Pesce. 2024 1st on the table but the 11OA this year off at least until the draft and we see what’s on the board.
-
Aside from Graves (whom I’d love as well for the right price) being 2 years older and decidedly less handsome, as a UFA he first and foremost needs to want to sign here. I’m also not buying the low term and cap hits I’m seeing for him. Maybe to go to a contender but for us to get him? I’m skeptical. All that said, I guess Hanifin would *also* need to be open to signing long term with us. And that’s no guarantee given his attitude towards re signing with old stink town.

Adding another top 4 d man from a team in a cap crunch would make the buy-out make a lot more sense. (Assuming we have the assets to acquire them.) So would taking on an expensive 3C that, as opposed to costing, may come with a decent draft pick attached. I’d rather we use the space to chase a big ticket piece, or bank a prospect or two for the future, than just plug holes with average pieces. -

Sure, but part of Drance’s article talks about how it’s strange that OEL and his agent were taken by surprise. Normally, the club would tell him he’s on the block to be bought out and he would at bare minimum submit a list. I think at that point they’d be pretty frank - include some teams that are taking on cap for picks - or you’re getting bought out. Even if the Canucks retain half of his 7 mil cap hit, that’s less dead cap than what the penalty is - without all the extra years beyond his contract. Yes it would cost assets but you’d be saving cap in other ways, and over a longer timeline. Putting in zero effort / patience to even exploring these options is certainly a decision. One they boxed themselves into with the Mikheyev, Miller and Kuzmenko signings. Now they can totally come out of this as winners if they use the league wide cap crunch to add some players that would normally be unavailable or more expensive. But if we just use the one-year 7 mil of space on a couple of ho-hum run of the mill UFAs (even guys I like such as Soucy and, say, Bjugstad) it would really seem like a long term waste. -

Sure, but as the deal carried less term there may have been opportunity to move him, though. And the buyout would still have been available with less dead term and cap. -

Haha I got a little carried away adding Graves, Carlo and Johansen on adding size. Probably too slow even without him. -

I like how Drance is highlighting the “proactive buyout” - we’ve done this quickly and decisively - and I’d assume it’s with a move or two already in mind. His “shoe to drop” comment might be speculation but I think he’s on to something. I doubt we pushed this just to kinda see what will happen. -

I don’t particularly want to go this route, but I wonder if there’s a path where we use our 1st and just go all in on improving the roster this year. Maybe start with a trade-down with Chicago to offload Myers and create mega flexibility. Then flip the 19OA to land Carlo and take a big run at Graves in FA. Work a trade with Nashville to land Johansen for Garland. Mikheyev-Petey-Kuzmenko Beauvillier-Miller-Boeser Hoglander-Johansen-Podkolzin Joshua-Aman-Lucic Hughes-Carlo Graves-Hronek Soucy-Bear (with one of Burroughs, Woo or Juulsen holding the fort until he’s healthy.) Demko That’s kinda nice but a ton of moving parts. Probably still best just to hang on to the 11OA and, if anything, try and add some draft capital by taking back an overpaid C to kill 2 birds with one stone. -

I love that this buyout burns one of Arizona’s 3 contract retentions as well. Those losers can kick rocks. -
[Proposal] Hannafin for first 2023?
ilduce39 replied to canucksnihilist's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
No way we should do that but that might actually be close to the price. The thing is, it will be a 1st from a team picking later in the round and also has a 2nd. 1st, 2nd, decent prospect. That’s probably the price and the problem is our 1st is too valuable and we don’t have the 2nd. Or really a prospect they’d want. Edit: I do hope Allvin gives them a call and asks around - maybe dangling our 2024 1st - but I think we need to keep the 11 over trading for a D. Too likely we get a top 10 caliber C with that pick. -
I’ve said it in other threads, Hanifin would be great if he finds chemistry with Hronek. That’s a classy top pair in their prime/mid 20s we can grow with. The price might be too much, though. Really think we need to use this 11OA to try and find Miller’s heir apparent at 2C. Pretty unique opportunity to land that piece outside the top 10 this year.
