[Buyout] Oliver Ekman-Larsson
ilduce39 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
If we’re going to try and create our top 4 around Hughes, trying to pry Carlo out of Boston is the way to go. I kind of like the idea of trying to land Hanifin if Calgary is re tooling as well to play with Hronek. Either move solidifies the top 4 and your idea with NYR fills 3C to boot - though I’ve heard Goodrow might be reticent to waive his NTC for us. -

I still think the smarter bet is to try and build a matchup top pair around Hronek as LD are easier to come by. Paying a 1st (probably the price for Schneider) for a proven, prime, young, guy like Hanifin makes more sense than trying to pry a RFA out of New York. -
[Proposal] Hannafin for first 2023?
ilduce39 replied to canucksnihilist's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Maybe something like Garland, no retention, and a 2024 first, top 10 protected for Hanifin. I was just thinking we’re better off landing a stud LD to pair with Hronek to create a true top pair than we are trying to find that perfect RD to pair with Hughes. Go cheaper with Hughes’ partner and have a solid 3rd pair (Soucy and Bear, let’s say.) Hanifin-Hronek (14 mil top pair) Hughes-Peeke (10 mil 2nd pair) Soucy-Bear (5 mil bottom pair) I know I’m adding Peeke as a bonus player - doesn’t have to be him at all - just a bigger body stay at home type. -

Rangers wouldn’t give up Schneider in a package for Miller when Miller was younger, on a cheaper contact and putting up 100 points as a C. We have nothing to offer the Rangers beyond our 1st round pick that would convince them to move Schneider - and they have zero interest in moving him. Now, everyone has a price so maybe we try and do 11OA+ whatever they think our best defensive prospect is for Schneider. We’re way more likely to get Peeke or Carlo if we’re trying to pry a cost controlled RD from a cap strapped team. -
[DEBATE] Which is the worst trade in Vancouver Canucks history?
ilduce39 replied to Elias Pettersson's topic in Canucks Talk
I just spent yesterday ripping the OEL buyout (which indicts the trade as well) but come on. Neely is an HOF’er so him alone is terrible. I didn’t realize the 3OA went as well. That guy played 1400 nhl games and was in the league until 2008. OEL deal can have a strong silver but Neely / 3OA has to be one of the worst trades in the history of the *league* -

Acquiring Johansen would involve taking on some cap for an RH C - but we’d have to be sending a winger the other way. Not sure we’d even want to re sign him as he’d be 33 or something. Just a re-allocation of cap and filling a gap in the roster, albeit at a fairly steep cap hit (but reasonable term.) -

I, for one, welcome the era of Hughes-Hronek playing 40 minutes a night! -

No, certainly not meant as a passive aggressive dig at you yourself (I don’t know your previous stance and it’s fine if people change their mind!) - simply my own take on my own thoughts. I was fairly vocal about not wanting this move and really still wish it didn’t happen. 2-ish mil of dead cap 6-7-8 years from now could mean less than nothing for all I know but I thought there was a decent chance OEL was serviceable next season and with Hronek and Tocchet I was fine seeing what we could do. With that said, I did think we needed even a stop gap 3C - so maybe there was NO market for our wingers even in player for player type deals. Who knows. It doesn’t really matter what I wanted anymore anyways, I’ve said my piece, may as well see what happens. -

I hate being a wet blanket but I didn’t spend the last few months saying this was a dumb move only to pretend to love it when it happens. That said, there are for sure some positives. -I rooted for OEL but never really his fit on the team as an LH PP guy stuck behind Hughes. -Now we can keep (or at least not pay to give away) players I actually like in Boeser, Garland and Beauvillier -this makes the offseason way more interesting as it really seemed like we were stuck before -way less likely to move the 11OA as part of a trade down cap dump -Maybe we can find the cap to keep Bear (I like Bear) -most importantly: maybe Allvin has a master plan to leverage the league cap crunch and we get a key piece out of this somehow some way -

Well, if that’s actually true I support the buy out. Hansen is a weirdo though so whatever. -

The gamble is, he played well last season and had a reasonable explanation for poor play in this one. Every season you eat with OEL takes a bit of AAV plus one year off the bite of the buyout. The UFA market is soft so the space is nice but it’s likely you’re getting back a meh player anyways. All this in a season where it’ll still be a long shot to make the playoffs. I think an OEL buyout was likely - but I’d have preferred to eat at least one, if not two (if he bounced back again) more years of the guy. The final down side is we all know he’s going to go somewhere and look good because the team will have structure and a roster where he can come in and play his game. All that considered I don’t think 4 years of dead cap is worth a chance at Bjugstad and Soucy. -

the last 3 off-seasons have been punctuated with the OEL trade, a huge Miller extension and now the OEL buyout This team just needed to catch its breath for a minute and re-tool around Petey, Hughes and Demko. Instead they doubled down on some 30+ year olds and it feels like we’re sprinting right into a wall. Maybe - hopefully - Allvin works some magic here with the cap space he’s carved out. But if it’s just sign a UFA D and C for likely more than they’re worth it’s not going to go well. -

I know some people aren’t that high on the guy but I genuinely wonder if Bear’s injury expedited this decision. With Bear we had a set top 5 and we knew he could play with OEL and Hughes. Without him we have Hronek - but then Myers who we know *didn’t* play well with those two. Lots of need to go shopping this offseason and the cap flexibility opens up way more options. -

Or Garland for Ryan Johansen might be an option now. Not sure if Nashville is interested, though. -

Yeah Replacing Benning with a GM/President who have continued the exact same approach (with maybe some better professional scouting - but also clearly their own taste in personnel) was certainly a choice. It’s not boring but it’s not exactly coming together amazingly either. -

I’ve thought of that as well - and while I’d didn’t post it (feel free to not believe me!) when Bear got hurt I kind of circled back to the OEL buyout as a cure-all for this upcoming season too. With the league’s cap crunch we can probably find a D and a C who look good enough with OEL’s space. And a D who fits better with Hronek or Hughes to boot. But 8 years? Long term pain for short term gain. Ah well. -

I don’t like this at all (but willing to be proven wrong if Allvin has some quality signing / trade to pull). Still, this move does fit with my opinion that dealing assets to sell actual good players in Garland/Boeser/Beauvillier is insane because that would have been about as bad (if not as long lasting). If GM’s around the league want to be stubborn may as well fall on our own sword and screw them over by snapping up Soucy or Bjugstad or whoever. -

How do people spin this into a negative on Aqualini, by the way? He can’t be cheap anymore so I guess he’s just impatient and greedy for playoff revenue? -

We’re also now sitting at Myers, Hronek and Hughes as the only veterans on the D. Immediate UFA overpay is the looming fear. It’ll be interesting and fun to see what we do though. -

I’ll get over it, but… what a dumb move at face value. any money we spend this year wipes out what we’d be gaining next year. I guess there’s a way to benefit if this helps us leverage the league wide cap crunch but holy hell this hurts for a long time. The 2 mil or so will hurt but HEARING ABOUT IT will be the worst part. This ensures Benning discourse into 2030. What a major bummer. -
Regardless of Bear, I hope PA shows some patience here and we don’t force something to sign an RD.
-
Of course they’ll look elsewhere now. Typical luck for this franchise. What should have been an easy solution is now a Myers-sized mess. Maybe circle back to Bear once they have some LTIR room.

How long until we are competing with Vegas & Colorado?
ilduce39 replied to Nucks89's topic in Canucks Talk
I think people underestimate the parity in the league. We’re a good game from Demko away from beating anyone. I wouldn’t bet on that holding up over a 7 game series, let alone multiple series, but this roster can also score like crazy. Learning team defence / transition is the biggest key and it’s also something we can improve on without adding players. So… I don’t feel silly thinking we could have a pretty good squad next year. I’m more worried about that fragile loser mentality that’s been sinking in the last few seasons. But we jettisoned the coach and captain. Hopefully that helps. -
If Danielson’s stock is somewhere between good 2-3C that’s a fabulous pick at #11. Look at the coup Horvat got at the deadline. He’s a 2C. 2Cs are worth their weight in gold. Are there a lot of guys you can roll out as a crappy 3C? Sure. But good 3Cs? That’s one of the hardest positions to land because when they get too good they get paid / move on. Having a home grown / cost controlled guy in that role would be fabulous.
