I mean, I agree that Green likely (and fairly) has a season and a half to get the ball rolling. This team, on paper, should be competitive enough to fight for a playoff spot. If it isn’t clicking by then, sure maybe you look at changing the coach. If we struggle to start this season, though, I think TG gets some rope... lots of changes can make it hard to find traction early on. Still, I think we come storming out of the gate again since we’re young and hopefully hungry... the trick will be sustaining it this year.
-
Yeah if the coaching change comes with a top pairing, right shooting defenceman I’ll drive Green to the airport myself. It’s a common fallacy in sport that if something isn’t going well to just try something different. Sometimes teams need time to learn and grow.. and mistakes and periods of “failure” are a part of that. It’s especially true when the overall talent level is low. They could be preforming at a (relatively) high level and still losing games. One aspect of the last 5 seasons I’ve appreciated is the relative continuity in management and coaching. We’ve lost Willie and Linden, but overall it’s been stable considering the team’s record. I don’t have any magic stats to back it up, but I’ve always thought this was a wise course. Particularly if you’re transitioning in a bunch of younger players who can benefit from some familiarity rather than musical chairs with the coaching staff (and subsequently strategy, etc.)

Green has done a great job and seems in sync with the team JB is putting together. He coaches an up tempo style that really fits the current group, at least on paper. He’s gotten a ton out of the young guys while the vets have played hard for him too when healthy. Edler is playing what might be the best hockey of his career and healthy 17-18 Sutter is exactly what we went out to acquire. No reason to think he’ll be replaced any time soon.

To play devil’s advocate, Roussel is hurt and I don’t see Goldy as any kind of a fit in the bottom 6. Loui could be the extra forward or in a rotation with Motte/Leivo. Im still hoping we can move him this offseason or he could very well end up in Utica... but there’s also a chance he’s still on the roster for another year at least. It’s not the end of the world if he is.
-
Honestly, not looking to “defend” him either - but if we can’t move him there’s worse fates than Beagle and Loui on your 4th line. (I’d prefer Motte/Leivo as I’m sure most would.) But at least Beagle/Loui can play some defense. The worst part would undoubtedly be sifting through the hilaaaarious “10 million dollar 4th line” comments ad nauseam.

He’ll start in the AHL but Juolevi’s busting out this year. When he cracks the NHL roster he’s going to look awesome slinging the puck up to our revamped top 6.
-
I’d rather have Stecher at that price than Hutton but anything more than 4 is starting to feel high for me for what he’s done so far. A lot will depend on how he does this year, too, I guess. If he hits 30+ points with our upgraded lineup then he gets his 4 plus change and we should be happy. Otherwise, as much as I like Stech, he doesn’t add the “extra” stuff like toughness, PP, PK, big point shot, etc to warrant too much money. If you can nab Benn at 2x2 I’m not sure 25 point Stech at 4+ makes sense as much as I like him.
-
What was Hutton rumoured to get via arbitration? 3.5? Stech should get around that barring a huge offensive explosion this season. He’s a great 3rd pairing guy who can move up when needed.. but he’s behind Myers and Tanev and not ideally a top 4 on a good club.

(Trade) Lucic + Conditional 3rd to Calgary for Neal
ilduce39 replied to Pears's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
There’s no room on our roster for Lucic, Neal or Loui. I’d rather have Motte in, Gaudette on call up and Roussel come in off the IR mid season. At at this point, seems like we can live with Loui’s 6 on the books. Bury him, loan him or keep him in the press box and try to sell the contract in his last year when we need the room for Petey and Quinn. -
Yeah, I have a lot of time for Sid but what mistakes need to be cleaned up outside of Loui? Myers and Beagle would be other guys signed to a contracts that may be problematic at the tail end. That’s not insignificant but it’s hardly the problem of growing a prospect pool devoid of first line forwards, top 4 defensemen and we didn’t even have any good goalie prospects. Honestly, we didn’t even have any DEPTH players which is why we needed to pick up Megna, Chaput and sign Jack Skille. No, if JB is fired tomorrow he leaves the franchise in an infinitely better situation that he inherited. Agree completely. One thing that was consistent through his tenure was JB kept his top picks while actively turning over the roster. By serving two masters he certainly left himself open to criticism... both by not loading up on futures but also not going all in to get those roster players that would have cost 1st rounders. With that said, the top end talent from the draft is finally starting to catch up with a relatively deep roster. Some “mistakes” like Beagle and Sutter are solid complimentary pieces to the young core we finally have.

It’s a toss up for me. I like the idea of Miller setting up Bo and Pearson, who are more shoot first players. Petey can do it all and I think Brock is underrated in his playmaking... thus Ferland fits better with them as a balance thing. I think Miller is obviously the bigger impact offensive player though. He’s that 4th forward we were really missing to round out our top 6.

2011 roster compared to the current 2019-20 season
ilduce39 replied to Arrow 1983's topic in Canucks Talk
I don’t think our current roster touches the 2011 as that group was a stacked and special team in their prime... but it’s nice to see a lot of parallels in the point totals and the overall depth. The kicker is that the 2011 squad went downhill in a hurry after that and our current group still has a lot of growing to do. -
[Signing] Canucks sign Micheal Ferland

I agree.. and I'd add Pearson to the list I produced before. There's different ways to add "grit" to your lineup - hits, forecheck, battle level in the corners, agitating, fighting, etc.. but our new roster is chalk full of guys who bring some kind of "hard to play against" element. Ferland - Pettersson - Boeser Pearson - Horvat - Miller Baertschi - Sutter - Virtanen Leivo - Beagle - Motte Roussel Edler - Myers Hughes - Tanev Benn - Stecher ...and Pettersson is a competitive phenom, Myers is huge and both Tanev and Stecher are warriors in their own zone. The crux of it is, of course, that the team finally looks to have the skill as well. The defence may be "average" but all of those guys excel at transitioning the puck up the ice.. and up front we have a ton of guys who like to shoot. There's 15-20 goal potential up and down the lineup. I can't shut up about it but I honestly don't think we're getting the credit we deserve as a nicely put together squad. To your point about Guddy, it finally feels like we have a complete team and that should elevate everyone's game. -
[Signing] Canucks sign Micheal Ferland

...yeah, I’ve been optimistic about top 6s and top 4s featuring Granlund (almost 20 goals!) Baertschi, Etem, Hutton, Goldobin, Rodin, Stecher etc etc... “This time it’ll be different!“ -

We’re so used to signing role players and trying to force them up our weaker lineup and then being disappointed. This offseason feels different. Not not only is the quality of our pickups at a higher level than in the past, they still aren’t expected to come in and carry the team. It’s easy to be optimistic in July, but I think we have good cause to be. -
Well, in any case, it was a throwaway comment. It’s the Canucks so I’m sure we’ve had a few stinky rosters. 2015-2017 in particular have to be up there though. A bunch of listless vets and role players put in over their heads... then Chaput/Megna/Vey and Matt Bartkowski’s mom. Wooo! I think management could have saved a lot of headaches even if they did everything the same but framed it with the “lean years” veneer instead of “trying to make the playoffs.” Or “we acquired Sutter because he was the best we could get for Bonino and we need someone to get their head kicked in while Bo develops and the Twins soak up 70% ozone starts.” Rather than calling him “foundational.” (This is admittedly debatable - did JB really think Sutter would come in and put up 50 points in a 2C role? Or maybe just hoped and figured he’d settle for a solid 3C in any case. I’m not sure.) I still think that’s a weird way to sell your team, though, and I like the stubborn fighting spirit even though they didn’t have chance. That’s just me though.

You’ll have to post the worse roster. I remember when we couldn’t give tickets away in the 90s and we still had AlMo and Bure. All due respect to the twilight Sedins, we didn’t have anyone who could hold their (Bure/Mogilny’s) jock straps in the Willie years.

[Signing] Canucks sign Micheal Ferland

I love the whole overall style of play. We don’t have a pure, heavyweight face puncher but a plethora of guys who can skate, hit and muck it up. Horvat, Virtanen, Miller, Ferland, Roussel, Motte and Benn are tough customers.. and Edler once in a blue can really lay the body too. If coach Green can get them flying around it should be an exciting group to watch. -
Haha maybe, I didn’t watch in the 70s/80s. I stand by it for the 90s and onward.. especially when you consider it was multiple seasons not just one and the twins were 50 point guys who needed a lot of sheltering by that time.

JB takes a ton of heat for not publicly crapping all over his team during what has to be the most talent-deficient lineup in 50 years of Canucks.

Which new player will have the biggest impact next season?
ilduce39 replied to 48MPHSlapShot's topic in Canucks Talk
I chose Hughes and am unsurprised to see he’s running away with it... for all the excitement of Myers-Miller-Ferland-Benn we’ve been missing that elite puck mover for years. Combined with a polished top 6, Quinn could have himself a season.
