Jim Bennings legacy without the OEL trade. Grade him out of 10.
ilduce39 replied to MaxVerstappen33's topic in Canucks Talk
Malhotra had almost one good season before he got hurt, struggled big time as a 2.5 mil 4th liner in his 2nd season and was shut down by Gillis after 9 games in his 3rd. I don’t like Boeser’s current cap hit either but he’s made a much bigger positive on-ice impact with the club than Malhotra did and it’s not particularly close. -
I’ll disagree on Pearson. The guy played a hard game, wasn’t afraid to scrum it up or drop the mitts. We needed more Pearsons, not less. Agree Beau/Brock and Garland don’t mesh well together. Too much cap hit and not enough tough to play against there to complement a top 9.

No one is easy to trade right now. Let alone anyone with a near 7 mil contract. Good or not. -
[Rumour] Canucks getting calls on Conor Garland

For sure. Just seems like some people think opening up cap space is somehow guaranteed to make us better. There still needs to be a plan on how to spend it - and there are absolutely worse ways to spend cap than Garland and Boeser. -

I agree Boeser’s legacy is still being written - but if Malhotra is a major star for Gillis after not even a full healthy season, I think Boeser counts for Benning. He’s also a pretty good distributor and good on the boards if he does have some work to do defensively. Closing in on top 20 all time Canuck scoring with a #23 overall pick is pretty good work. -
Yeah, Bear’s health isn’t getting the discussion it warrants. Having him AND Hronek on the right side is a huge step towards actually playing decent hockey. Only one leaves a big Myers-sized hole. Hope he makes the decision and starts the road to recovery asap!

I’ve always found a lot of the discussion around Gillis was positive because he oversaw some great teams then got fired in short order. His best moves were Hamhuis, Ehrhoff, Malhotra plus Horvat and his mistakes were Ballard, Booth, Roy, Pahlsson, Hodgson/Kassian and overall poor drafting. He should have been given the opportunity to rebuild but I think ownership wanted one last run with the Sedins - and to be fair Gillis’ later acquisitions and drafting sure didn’t help extend the window. I think he was decent and had some nice ideas / patience when moving Schneider and Luongo. But he also, clearly benefited from an all star core with elite players at every position and the best coach (hired by Nonis) in club history. Benning, meanwhile, inherited the worst combination of on ice talent and prospects since the old expansion teams and an owner who wanted it turned around in a hurry. He didn’t do a good job overall but Petey, Hughes, Demko, Boeser and Miller are some pretty big highlights. Should have been let go after allowing Tanev, Toffoli and Markstrom to walk for nothing and before the OEL trade… but oh well. -
This core actually played tough when they made the bubble playoffs. Part of our perception of being weak / soft is because we’ve sucked so much it’s hard to have that scrappy swagger. They need to develop a hard nosed two-way mentality and find some consistent success there. We’re always top of the league in fights - it’s not that. They need to buy in, play defence and block some shots. Get into a playoff hunt. Have each other’s backs in the scrums. Play as a team. Recently we’ve seen too much of the soft play / stat padding that happens on perpetual losers. It’s a lot deeper than size.

Yeah, I can see us trying to upgrade on him next offseason - could be easier to do if he has another good season and has some value. In the meantime, I’m happy enough to have him as at least he’s shown he can play and has chemistry with OEL and Hughes. He should grow in value with another good season.
-
Personally, I don’t think so unless they’re particularly worried about the injury. I’m high on Bear and I’ve read some things about how his underlying numbers match what I saw this season - he simply played good hockey for us. ( https://canucksarmy.com/news/amp/ethan-bear-demonstrably-made-his-canucks-teammates-better-throughout-2022-23 ) He’s the type of guy we’ll be always on the hunt to upgrade on but right now looks like a solid placeholder on the right side and won’t break the bank.

I see both sides of this. I agree that the #1 priority needs to be guys who can straight up play. But it would be nice to find guys with a bit of size AND can play - particularly on the PK. Going to be hard to find that all this offseason but guys like Carson Soucy, Niko Miklola, circling back on Schenn or going after Holl.. we’ve discussed trading for Andrew Peeke who should be available. Some reasonably cheap and available big bodies out there if we can clear a bit of space. They’re all NHL’ers but not spectacular. Could work if we move Myers and find a lefty to play with Bear and a righty to play with Hughes. Easier said than done.

Ahh. Measurin’ the old D on a Saturday evening. In all seriousness, this has been Vegas’ thing since their inception - and they’ve been a tough out in the playoffs for years. When we played them in the bubble we still took them to 7 games thanks to Demko - and our team didn’t quit. They were clearly the better squad, though. No doubt about that. I think it’s pretty obvious we could really use a bigger LHD who can kill penalties and we’ll need a heavier RHD once Myers moves on. But they don’t necessarily need to be top pairing guys. Toews and Makar aren’t big but are by far the best for Colorado (yes I know they have bigger guys playing on the lower pairs.)
-
I agree with this. I also doubt we go D in the first round. It’s going to be Dvorsky or Benson. Maybe Leonard.

Every year the trade up / trade down is a hot piece of speculation around the league but it rarely happens. The deal with Chicago only makes sense from a cap bind position - and even then I wouldn’t do it to just shed cap. I’d want the cap dump AND a 2nd. And even then I think I’d be happier with the 11OA… but that’s also a pretty nice deal (and probably unlikely Chicago goes for it, even if our “cap dumps” can actually play.)

[Rumour] Canucks getting calls on Conor Garland
ilduce39 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
So, moving both Boeser and Garland - plus retaining 2.5 mil for 2 years and dealing away the asset you get back for Brock. For what? In one year we get 10 mil for Myers and Beauvillier off the books plus whatever the cap is going up. What free agents are we needing to chase this offseason that makes us retain and move out on a couple of 50 point wingers for nothing? We have the cap space opening up to extend Petey and Hronek. It would be nice to land a 3C and maybe one more D but as a non-playoff team can we really get a premium piece in UFA? Also - if we clear space for a trade what are we giving up that isn’t to a team at least interested in Brock or Garland? Creating the cap space just to have it doesn’t make sense - especially with how hard it will be to carve out right now. If we’re doing it, it’s to immediately spend it. Otherwise we should just wait until things loosen up and with one year less Garland and Boeser become easier to move. -
[discussion] big summer tocchett
ilduce39 replied to Angry Goose's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
This is the biggest key to me. When people talk about how we’re “so far away” from competing it isn’t from a roster talent point of view. (Or at least it shouldn’t be.) the group just needs to collectively pull their heads out of their butts and play better - especially to start the year. We do need a half decent 3C though. Somehow, some way. Find one of those and none of the core need to really improve - just play around the best level we’ve seen them play - and this will be a fun team to watch. -
[proposal] UFA signing Jujhar Khaira
ilduce39 replied to Ted Lasso's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Concussion history aside, I like Khaira on the 4th line but as others have said he’s not moving the needle enough for 3C and we already have Joshua and Aman at 4C. -
Yep. Teams go crazy for centres and big guys on draft day. (To be fair I’d love a bigger C like Danielson or Dvorsky too) but it could lead to some very interesting players still on the board at 11.
-
We also need to realize ASP won’t be here for a few years so our back end could change a lot by then. Not nearly as hard to find bigger defensive-oriented LHD to pair him with either. Finally, these high end RHD usually keep their value really well even if they don’t break out right away. So useful as an investment asset too. Not a bad pick at all.
-
Michkov will definitely drop. Maybe even to us. Need to hang on to the 11 until draft day even if we’re contemplating a trade down.
-
This is also a team with 7.5 mil committed to Guddy and Andrew “Guddy Jr” Peeke. Them re-allocating cap from that situation and putting it towards getting a good forward would be doing *them* a favour. I don’t see Peeke as a long term solution as Hughes’ partner any more than Poolman was so the fit isn’t there anyways.

[Rumour] Canucks getting calls on Conor Garland
ilduce39 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
11OA for Laf feels too rich. Maybe if we did the pick swap with Chicago (to offload Myers) and land an 2nd… and sent the rags the 18 + Garland for Laf. We could use that cap space to add, say, Graves. No first rounder but we’d be adding a 2nd plus Laf and Graves. Maybe a smidge of cap space after that’s all done. Management might have been thinking something like that given the Severson to Van rumours. Not sure that’s all worth it - even if Myers is willing to go to Chicago for a year and the Rags are even interested in moving Lafreniere. Edit: if we’re retaining on Garland - for - Laf we probably don’t have to give up a 1st. Maybe a 2nd would do. Probably don’t have enough room to chase Graves but could still comfortably add Soucy and the 18 could still possibly have a Willander on the board. -
[Rumour] Canucks getting calls on Conor Garland
ilduce39 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
It should be noted that article is all speculation rather than rumour - but he has both Garland and Boeser on the list. More so than “maybe we get Laf” I think it shows the hockey world realizes those two have value - but every team’s cap situation is going to make a trade a difficult situation. -
Yep just all around crappy situation. With Hughes, Hronek and Bear we were small but could at least get the puck out of our own zone. With us being so close to the cap even his 1 year QO is significant so it’s a pretty big decision.
-
Classic Canuck luck. At least we didn’t sign him before he got injured this time. 2 months recovery does give him time before the season but, yeah, risky stuff. Wonder how this affects our offseason. Another year of OEL-Myers doesn’t sound fun.
