  1. The “negativity” thing hit critical mass on twitter recently.. hilarious stuff. Funny how sensitive our media gets about being called out on their biases. Honestly... of course they’re going to be “negative” as the team has been horrible the last 4 seasons and in a decline for a few before that. For me, “negative” isn’t the issue - its the condescending, obnoxious and smarmy tone adopted in their writing that has caused me to stop reading. I also don’t need the reverse-poop sandwich (start with “Benning has been terrible, but....” and end with “the team is still horribly managed.”) every time I read about a “positive” thing.
  2. My best guess: Miller Boeser - Petterson Hughes - Myers Horvat Pearson - Baertschi Edler - Stecher or Horvat Pearson - Baertschi - Ferland Edler Sub Goldy for Baer depending on who makes the team.
  3. That’s good to hear. As an aside, from his interviews and stuff it felt like it bothered TL a whole lot more. But you can’t change your vision... and I’m glad Aquilini stuck by JB long enough so that we can really get a sense of the type of team he’s trying to build. It’s taken some time to get the top end talent in place but imagine adding Tryamkin and a buzz saw like Podkozlin to this mix. You can really get a sense of the type of team being assembled.
  4. JB has taken his lumps for acquiring Sbisa, Sutter and Guddy. For drafting Jake, for signing guys like Dorsett and Beagle. These players have had varying degrees of success here but he hasn’t stopped trying to add that physical, gritty element to our team. For the naysayers it must be frustrating that he doesn’t give one whit to their opinions. For me, I absolutely love it. This feels like the style of team you can win with.
  5. That’s a fair take and I pretty much agree. 14-15 had the advantage of having “president’s trophy” level effort and consistency from the vets. Can this current group find that consistency is one of many questions going in to this season. I do think our current team is built a lot better for playoff hockey, though.
  6. He’s being hired as a scout and video analyst, not assistant GM. Edit: this came off as a little blunt, just trying to say it seems the guy is hired for his analysis work. Not sure it’s correct to take it as some big admission of mistakes by management or to expect him to immediately influence the club on the strategic or even tactical levels.
  7. On one hand it would be awesome to bring in Barrie to upgrade Tanev or Stecher.. but we do run the risk of icing a lot of smurfs if it’s Tanev who goes out the door and is it worth committing the cap to that area? Assuming this year goes okay with the blue line, we could be due for a pretty big internal upgrade in the form of Juolevi and Tryamkin, too. If Barrie is brought in as well there would need to be some shuffling.
  8. In his interview he repeatedly mentioned it was his and his wife’s decision to come to Vancouver. Sounds like they’re both excited to move to Van. In other news, someone needs to teach Mrs. Ferland Russian and get her into contact with Mrs. Tryamkin ASAP.
  9. I’ve heard that part, too. I certainly wouldn’t want to give up 4 firsts for anyone other than a Gretzky or Lemieux clone but if you’re going to do it, you better get them for the full 7 years.
  10. IIRC these comments were directed at Virtanen/McCann and maybe Hutton back in 2015/16. Burrows made some as well. Comments (leadership) like this is why people supported having some vets around as we cycled in the kids. I also don’t remember many more call-outs and Jake and Ben have rounded into quality pros so maybe the veteran thing worked. Further, being more competitive in games helps players find that drive you were talking about so they often go hand in hand. Even in losing seasons you can be more competitive than you would have been by adding a few guys. It’s hard to measure but I’ll have my rookies rubbing shoulders with competitive, effective guys like Ryan Miller and Derek Dorsett any day.
  11. Yeah I heard (or read) someone saying he turned down some offer sheets because he didn’t think Toronto would match. I don’t think he has much interest in going to Ohio.
  12. True about his value as well. He could be worth a reasonable return if he can hold together and Gaudette looks ready. To think I’ve read stuff insinuating we’d have to package a sweetener like Jake to get rid of him. Geez.
  13. Yeah, he’s like Tanev at this point, with injury woes it’s tough to really count on him (and easy to forget him) but those two HEALTHY really cement our C depth and give us at least an nhl caliber top 4 defence. He was effective once we stopped trying to play him with the twins or trying to use him as a top 6 C. As much as we’re improved, 65+ games apiece from them might be one path to us making the playoffs this year. Gaudette is just pure gravy at this point but it’d be nice to see him work on his scoring touch in all-situations in Utica if he isn’t needed to start the year. If Gaudette and Juolevi are on the farm until injuries happen that could facilitate a nice bounce back for the comets.
  14. Can’t see us moving Sutter. After all the moves we’ve made it’s pretty clear we’re hard charging for the playoffs and a good 3C is pretty key. His contact is also up before the dreaded offseason where we have to re-sign Petey and Quinn. No impetuous to move him. Nothing against Gaudette as he’s a big part of the future but he’d have to show more than last season before we clear out Sutter for him.
  15. He’s always been one of the more balanced and fair commentators, though. I’ve never noticed him being particularly obnoxious with his takes, anyways. Congrats to him in any case!
  16. So you’re saying the team put forth a poor effort and underperformed? Because this group has been picked to come dead last the past few seasons, absorbed multiple critical injuries and still kept out of the basement. This team had a ton of holes the past few seasons but “effort” wasn’t one of them. Not even during the WD years.
  17. I agree with this and think it’s wise to roll the dice on a longer contract to keep his hit down in the future. His agent might be angling hard on what we see as well, though.. that he’s probably a 30+ guy fully healthy playing on Petey’s wing. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out.
  18. It certainly looks a lot better when you consider the entire offseason. This isn’t a one-off acquisition that moves the needle a little... it’s part of a multi-move upgrade to add size, skill, speed and toughness to the top of the roster. We aren’t magically cup favourites... but if this group stays reasonably healthy and plays for Green the way last year’s team did, they aren’t going to be any fun to play against and I bet at least one pundit says, “this isn’t a team you want to play in the playoffs.” We’ll be rolling four heavy, fast, defensively responsible lines who can score. A decent mix of size and transition on the back end and two big, athletic game-stealing goalies. I can’t wait!
  19. Agreed and you’re dead right about the key to it all being the young core. The year to year improvement of Pettersson, Horvat, Boeser and Hughes... plus Jake (and Juolevi) has always been what’s driving the rebuild. Thats key to our acquisitions as well. We aren’t asking Roussel/Beagle/Ferland/Myers/Miller/Benn to come in and save the team. We don’t need Sutter to be “foundational” any more. They just need to do their part to help our young all stars. That’s huge. And fundamentally different to a lot of the “mistakes” we’ve made in the past.
  20. Full season of Hughes, plus a big RH shot in Myers and Miller’s net front presence bode well for this. Not to mention we still have Edler and his drop pass for old time’s sake.
  21. Just throwing the other GM’s off the scent. He’s playing 4D chess out there.
