[Signing] Canucks sign Micheal Ferland
ilduce39 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
We're at the point where people who have lobbied to get JB fired the past 5 years are now uncomfortable with the idea the team might actually push for the playoffs this season. Complaining about (mostly overblown) cap implications 3-4 years from now is pretty much the last foothold for them.. this offseason has undoubtedly left us a stronger club, in every conceivable way. -

We're a bit locked in for the next 2 years with a few guys.. but the contracts do tend to tail off as the years progress. Not NMC all the way through and I don't think anyone has an NMC for the expansion draft. -

If he brings what he did to us that series with any regularity he's going to be one of the all time fan favs. -

That could be a pretty funny persona.. one of those Russian animatronic fortune tellers constantly foretelling cap doom “3-4 years from now” -

Honestly, they should have their own awards night in some parent’s basement where they award “most weaponized cap space” and “biggest pick stockpile” -

That’s very true. I think when anyone hears “concussion” they think a guy is done. Thankfully these days there’s a ton of precaution taken over the issue. I think he’ll be fine and an awesome fit with us! -

Feels kind of gross saying this, but, if the concussions catch up to Ferland (and knock on wood that they don’t) his cap hit won’t be an issue. That’s his big red flag, no? The length of the contract against his age isn’t super concerning. His speed should hold up. He’s 6’2 210 not 240. -

From the beginning of last season we’ve now added Miller, Ferland, Pearson and Leivo to the wings. All bigger guys who can score. Honestly, if Green can keep doing his thing this group is going to turn some heads. -

That’s a fair enough take, but just because you have some regrettable contracts (Loui) doesn’t mean you turn down a deal. Just because some are bad, not all FA signings hurt. That said, something has to give before the season... we’ll see what it costs to make room. -

This guy looks like a young Raveen. Maybe he can see the future? -

My only hope here is that Virt isn’t being added as a “sweetener” in a move to jettison Loui. Love the idea of Ferland/Virtanen/Roussel terrorizing the opposition. -

JB getting his guys at waaaay less than the chicken littles predicted. He has some nice pieces locked up long term at great cap hits. Old Swindlin’ Jim isn’t going down without a fight and I, for one, am here for it. -

Probably something like, “Well now they’ve handcuffed themselves and other GMs know they need to deal Eriksson. Terrible move by Jim Benning!” -
[Report] Eriksson “NOT” likely to be moved on

I agree. The situation was always volatile and the cap situation + some ill timed comments are enough for this to get silly. -

I actually think Loui’s attitude and effort issues are being hugely overblown. Not like he’s a 20+ goal guy if he just tried a little harder. I don’t believe that at all. Fans have been nothing but trash to him the whole time, too. I dunno, at this point I just want it to be over. I’m sure he feels the same way. Hopefully something gets done. -

It is selfish to derail a positive thread by bringing up a contentious, tenuously related and negative topic. You can talk about virtue signalling in off topic if you want without calling into question a pretty slam dunk nice thing to do by a 19 year old kid for another teen. ...and yeah, let’s compare the feelings and likelihood of looking at the Canucks official message board of Brad Marchand to a local kid with special needs and his family. Way to completely miss the point. I remember a tweet about the Canucks signing a college FA was met with all the usual derision of canuck twitter and Murph had to remind everyone that the kid and his family were probably pretty stoked to have signed regardless of what the negative fans thought of him. Give him a day to celebrate before crapping on him as a waste of a contract. Athletes, people in news stories and their families are real people too. Probably a lot more emotionally invested in whatever story is being published than a random talking point under an anonymous internet handle. That carries a whole lot more weight with me than someone being called selfish for saying something selfish. -
That’s a pretty myopic lens, though, and ignores Benn who I haven’t seen anyone complain about. Most of his acquisitions were of the bargain variety and forgive me if I’m a bit worn out listening to people whinge about Gudbranson. ”brought in on bad Benning transactions” Del Zotto was a free UFA who nabbed us a pick at the deadline (exactly what everyone whines about, right?) and Pouliot was a low risk, decent gamble. Only our colicky fan base can turn that we replaced that cap hit with better players into part of the fire Benning saga.

The most likely people to be interested in this story would be this kid, his friends and family. If they peruse this site, they now get 3 pages of your headcase contrarian nonsense instead of enjoying what boils down to a classy move and awesome moment for Quinn and this kid. Something there is no shame in others enjoying, being inspired by and applauding. Honestly, it’s super selfish and rude to hijack a pretty slam dunk feel good thread with this garbage.- 82 replies

[Signing] Canucks sign Francis Perron

“Utica is a mess” comments hopefully put to bed this year with a few of these signings. At the very least we’re looking a lot deeper on the farm. Incoming “Cull won’t play the prospects” though, I guess. Can’t win em all. -
If we stay relatively healthy with Pettersson-Horvat-Sutter-Beagle I think people will understand what JB was doing when he spent money on those bottom 6 C-men... our bottom 6 is going to be a pain to play against when you add in guys like Jake, Gaudette, Motte and Roussel. Motte and Roussel are 10+ goal guys and Jake and Sutter are more like 15+ goal guys over 82. Gaudette’s ceiling isn’t known at the moment... I could even see him C’ing a line with Sutter on the wing for face offs. Could be a better blend of playmaking and shutdown D. In any case, I don’t agree when people rattle off Sutter and Beagle’s salaries like it’s 7 mil of wasted cap. Those guys are useful players... and to find veteran bottom 6 C’s you might be able to cut some corners but they ain’t going to be free.

Where we’re avoiding Edmonton is that, besides the lack of multiple 1OAs, our roster tends to outplay the “on paper” talent level while the Coil fall short year after year. Its tough to pinpoint but coaching and leadership would be where I’d start.

I honestly don’t care what you consider yourself, I generally appreciate posters on both sides because it makes things more interesting. I think it was a trollish comment in any case. I’ve seen from some other “fans” (and media) of the team that are so invested in the “management is terrible” narrative that they openly hope the team flounders to get rid of Benning, but also stroke their egos. It’s understandable given how invested we can get on the debates that rage over the past few years.. but kinda silly when you’re hoping the team suffers misfortune to prove a point.

Ah yes, nothing says fandom like the time honoured tradition of hoping we lose out on a lottery draft pick to spite the current general manager. I’m not complaining about another fan, I’m calling out a troll.

There it is. No surprise. It’s more about being right than being a fan of the team.

Ugly game. I actually like the group. Tons of turnover doesn’t surprise me with the slow start. They just need to win one and get rolling.
