  1. On the other hand, Lions have some high upside Canadian WRs in Durant and Cottoy. I’ve been particularly impressed with Durant this year... nice to see a local kid doing well!
  2. I agree that the 2RW spot is more of a want than a need this season. Top 6 wingers as of now would be Boeser, Miller, Pearson and one of Baer/Goldy/Jake/Leivo. I guess you could even consider Gaudette if he converts to wing. It would be nice to add Dzingel or Ferland but I’m not sure they’d bring much more offence... all 5 of those we already have could be 10+ goal guys with decent ice time. I think this year is another progress/evaluation year.. IMO the top 6 actually looks half decent, especially if the kids take another step. Plus, our D should be providing a whole lot more transition/possession and pure offence than in the past. As always, there’s a ton of moving parts and not everything will go smoothly... but every year it seems a whole lot more likely. Man, look at the rosters to start last year. Pouliot, Guddy, Hutton... all in the top 4.. Del Zotto on the bottom pair. Goldy, Loui, Jake and Schaller in the top 6. Leipsic, Archibald and Granny in the bottom 6. Bachman was our backup. There must have been a crapton of injuries already.. but holy moly don’t we look better going into 2019! (And we somehow won that game!!!)
  3. People hope for an all-drafted young core sweeping through the league.. but the St Louis / Boston final should show that there’s more than one way to build a contender.
  4. In another universe, maybe JB went all-in on rebuilding through the draft... but he didn’t in this one. We’ve done a good job developing on top of drafting this way. Plus, we have a scrappy bottom 6 to let our young guys flourish. We’ll go as far as they can take us.. and the depth on the team will ensure Juolevi, Woo, Lind, Rathbone, Lockwood, Madden, Podkozlin, etc etc wont be called upon until ready and should have some decent veteran teammates when they are. We’re doing it the old fashioned way.. not trying to game the system or cut corners and get extra “assets” or tank, etc.. just adding young and old talent together and trying to win. We’ll see if it pays off.
  5. Honestly, I like their forward group but jebus it’ll be interesting to see how they manage next year after being decimated on the back end. Losing Trouba alone is crippling.
  6. Check again on JB’s contracts. Loui = full this year, 15 team next 2 Sutter = 15 team no trade Roussel = 15, 8, 5 teams Beagle = 15 then 5 teams for last 2 years Tanev = 8 team no trade Edler is a 2 year deal and avoids expansion.. Myers’ deal is easier to move as time passes too. All his deals get easier to move as time goes on, at least from an NTC perspective. Outside of Myers, our next longest contracts are fantastic 4 year ones for Miller and Horvat. Roussel, Beagle and Loui still have 3 years left. Everyone else is 1 or 2. As as for the rest of the cap, Loui is the big problem. Other than him, it’s 1.9 for one more season of Schaller and 1 mil for the next 2 to buy out Spoons. Hardly egregious but it does add up along with the 3 mil for Luongo. I see one big mistake in Loui, two minor ones and one obnoxious kick to the shins with cap recapture. Maybe we replace one of Sutter or Beagle with Gaudette and save a mil or two after this year but right now they’re starters as 3C and 4C on this team. Maybe we let Baer’s 3 mil go... but healthy, he provides a similar PPG to a guy like Dzingel at likely a cheaper salary. A lot of Jim’s guys just need to stay healthy and a better schedule and deeper team should help with that.
  7. “Capped out” after signing Myers and Benn, trading for Miller and re-signing Boeser. I keep reading this on Twitter and it makes me laugh as though JB couldn’t get anything done this offseason. He’s done more than anyone save maybe one or two teams. Pretty huge tantrum to throw because we can’t sign Dzingel. Its also hypocritical to criticize JB for not being able to sign UFAs because... he signed too many UFAs. What do you want? To sign or not to sign? As always with JB’s critics, there isn’t much of an alternative plan (other than 10 years of tanking, “weaponizing cap space” and “stockpiling picks.”) You just want to sit back and bitch about everything in isolation and then wonder why nobody agrees with you. JB’s clause contracts are also a lot less restrictive than the full NTC’s Gillis was tossing around. They’re always partials and scale back as the contracts age. Loui aside, we also have a ton of guys coming off the books as we progress. There’s a lot of flexibility. We may be “capped out” this year after a few big moves but are in no danger long term to lose guys like Petey or Quinn.
  8. Also, Kerfoot is an RFA acquired in a trade making the comparisons kinda silly.
  9. The Myers pick up is different than previous acquisitions because our team is just a lot stronger. He’s our #1 offensive option at RHD, where he should feast after being stuck behind Buff and Tuba. He’s also going to get a better partner in Eagle or Huge than he had in WPG. There’s very real reasons to be optimistic. Our team has lacked two big things the last 5 years: a PPQB (Hughes) and a big shot from the point (Myers). I know he gets crapped on but Newell Brown must be licking his chops for the PP this year. Miller is a net front specialist as well, or so I’ve read. I think it’s also telling that last years UFAs in Beagle and Roussel at least looked pretty good with our team playing their proper roles. I think we forget that Sutter was pretty darn effective (healthy) as a true shutdown #3 in Green’s first season. Again, as the top of the lineup figures itself out... it makes the team a lot stronger as players end up in their proper roles. As the team improves, everyone is going to benefit. (It’s also why I hope we lock up Brock long term this year - his numbers are going to go through the roof with a full training regimen plus better puck moving on the back end.)
  10. Isn’t he a Kurtenblogger? (Whatever that is.) I remember when those guys and the pass it to bulis guys were light hearted, sometimes funny and felt more like “fans.” The virulent cesspool that is Canuck Twitter has made all these guys into miserable jerks. It’s just a constant pissing contest to see who can have the most negative take on anything the team does. They’re super sensitive about it, too, if you call them out on it. Honestly they should just find different lines of work because they seem unhappy.
  11. My biggest issue with “analytics” is that, with a heaping dose of context, it works best as explaining what happened. However, it loses a lot of punch as a predictor, particularly when we’re talking about players moving from team to team with changes in deployment, teammates, coaching, systems, etc etc plus all the injuries professional athletes play through from game to game and season to season. Hockey is just such a fluid game that doesn’t lend itself to this kind of analysis like a much more controlled, set piece game such as baseball does. Its interesting stuff, but for me it doesn’t carry the same weight.
  12. I don’t want to give JB too much credit (blame?) here, but maybe part of the reason Sakic took this deal was because Jim wasn’t willing to let him fleece us at the draft. Still shocked they couldn’t find a better deal for Barrie, unless it’s common knowledge he wants to hit UFA.
  13. I can’t see us keeping him for the next 3 years, wonder when he’ll go and how much it’ll cost us to be rid of him. I didn’t mind him as a depth guy when cap wasn’t an issue, as he played defence and still got his 10 goals... but with his recent comments and us gearing up for the playoffs it’s time to cut ties.
  14. Just his sheer size makes us tougher to play against... at that height he has ridiculous reach but can also generate an insane amount of leverage. Add in that Benn is a tough guy. Can’t wait for Tryamkin to join them and we’ll be downright nasty on the back end. People forget that it doesn't need to be a finished product in one offseason... we’re still building, just need to keep moving forward.
  15. Good ol Burkie isn’t afraid to tell it like it is.
  16. TSN desperate to make Eastern teams feel good about themselves. They’ve all gotten worse today.
  17. God. They just added 9 goals in Myers and likely another 20 in Miller. Toss in whatever Quinn adds plus healthy / improved Brock/Bo/Pettersson and a full season of Pearson and hopefully Baertschi. But yeah, who’s gonna score?!
  18. Plus the Edler contract. Cant believe people are whining after this.
  19. Sounds like 32 YO Stralman just went for 3x5+ ... D wasn’t going to be cheap today.
  20. Agreed - and it’s what JB seems to have been banking on since the Sedin retirement. I remember the refrain last year was “who’s going to score?!” Now it’s centred around overpaying for Myers and giving up a 1st for Miller. He’s doing it his own way, but I’d JB pulls this rebuild off I have no idea how Van media is going to rationalize it.
  21. 6x5 is a fair deal considering it’s FA and what’s available. Honestly, (I know I’m a homer, but...) so long as Myers and Miller play to their average Jim’s had a very tidy offseason so far.
  22. I’ll take a big, tough hometown boy on the back end any day. Edler-Myers Hughes-Tanev Benn-Stecher Biega Feels a lot better than Edler-Tanev Pouliot-Guddy Hutton-Stecher Biega
