The most important add will likely be Quinn. He still counts, though, and I’m glad we’re adding some reinforcements for him.

[Rumour] Canucks interested in Gustav Nyquist

I’m hoping for a Nyquist level player too but it will take some interest in our middle 6ers or a Loui deal. I’m hoping, anyways. -
[Rumour] Canucks interested in Gustav Nyquist

It hasn’t even started, let alone finished? -
Well, we’ll agree to disagree here. I can appreciate the danger in signing any 29 year old long term and the inherent but the player: a big 30-point RHD with a decent shot makes sense to me at this juncture.
-
That’s a fair criticism as I’ve made the comment in the past. The Loui deal is the real problem, as his play has never come close to justifying the cap hit. If he had some 50-60 point years or was a 20 goal guy he’d probably be a lot easier to move out as well.. or you’d just be satisfied with keeping him. Jim is going to have to sweeten the pot and ship him to a cap floor team after his last signing bonus. There’s no two ways around it. Canucks putting money into Sutter and Beagle don’t bother me, at least if Sutter would stay healthy. Having quality down the middle is a place I don’t mind spending on. I can see the Canucks moving on from Tanev after next season.. and Schaller will be gone giving us another 6 mil. I think that money can be better spent barring a resurgence from Tanev. Its really not that much of a mess to clean up... pretty much all Eriksson. Sutter and Beagle might be overpaid by 2 mil between the both of them but they can handle their minutes and bring some spine to the group.
-
Pretty much. On one hand complain about how terrible the team is, on the other whine about how we over paid and jumped the gun by 3 years for any attempt to get better.

Any successful person ever didn’t just quit because something didn’t go their way. You can’t stop trying to upgrade the d, trading or signing free agents just because you got burned a few times. That’s too broad a brush. Myers is being signed to help out a decent young core and possibly be paired with Hughes... not as a last gasp to prop up the Twins during an inevitable downswing. He’s also a lot more proven commodity than Guddy was when picked up. You need stronger parallels than “he’s big” or “the contract numbers are the same” which have zero bearing on whether he’ll be worth the commitment or not. That’s not learning from history.. that’s just doing nothing. The minute a management team stops trying to get better because they’re afraid of their own decision making, they need to be let go. In any case, the Myers bashing has taken on a life of its own, like all the narratives pushed by bed wetting Canuck fans. I guess I should commend the commitment. All the whining the past 5 years has been completely and hilariously tuned out by the front office. I’d suggest, at the very least, to wait and see what (if) he signs for before self flagellating over it.

So does every manager everywhere. At least JB listens to his scouts, if that’s what you’re crediting him with. Most of whom were around for previous, lacklustre regimes.
-
They got futures. Used some to draft people, used some on players. If the JB has mismanaged the team half as badly as you make it out to be, nobody would be defending him because he’d be fired and the team would look like crap. Instead, the group looks pretty good as a whole, with a very exciting young core, and only the most ardent whiners are still holding on to late round draft picks traded away 3 years ago.
-
I’ll admit it’ll go a long way in elevating us to “contender” status is JB can hit a home run in FA or trade the way he knocks them out of the park at the draft.
-
They honestly think it's a video game and players are just numbers. You can gripe away about "waste" but I've said it all along: JB has kept the internal competition on the team at a high level and surrounded it with good leadership, guys who play the right way and kept the room a cohesive place. These guys are complaining about not picking up a nickel on the sidewalk while ignoring what actually makes teams win games.
-
Too bad but we still have Biega under contract for next year so a healthy right side (assuming we add) gets a little crowded. Would be nice if we could have both of em though, especially if Tanev is with the club this year.
-
He’s not replacing Stecher, though... he’s bumping Biega, Schenn and expected to be a lot more durable than Tanev who is also showing signs of regression in his play on top of his body. Our RD situation is so gross I think he’ll be a huge impact, especially over the course of 82 games. I haven't seen any reports that he isn’t earning his 5.5 right now.. I’m comfortable with 6 mil per as salary but I’d be happier with 4 or 5 years than 6. I did hear the only hang up for him was term. I hope we hold to that.
-
He’s not Loui and he’s also not Gudbranson.
-
Loui drastically underperformed his contract. You can’t assume everyone will do the same. That’s just fear mongering. Having played against 6’7 and 6’8 players they can generate a ridiculous amount of leverage... Myers is not some overhyped goon because he has size. He’s a decent player who, as a bonus, is a giant. The whole Canucks army “we want a team of skilled fast Smurfs” needs to take a seat until it actually proves successful, which it never has and never will.
-
7x7 is too much but I can live with 6x6. Hoping for a little less term at least. Defenders still need to play defence, especially if you’re taking the harder matchups in the higher pairings. I don’t know why you’re scoffing at the ability to clear the crease. The “new nhl” still has huge skilled guys who can exploit smaller body defence.
-
Stecher - Biega - Schenn Tanev on IR. Get it done JB!
-
Saying he’s about as effective as Stecher is just giving Troy his due. They're way different players though.. Myers may not be particularly physical for his size, but he can still clear the crease better than Troy. You can’t teach that size. He also has a cannon of a shot compared to Stech’s muffin. In the end; he’s better suited to top 4 duty than Stech - who is a fantastic 3rd pairing option. I get the money concerns.. but I still hope we land the guy.

... just in time as Tanev moves on? 2020-21 Blue Line Edler-Barrie Hughes-Myers Juolevi-Tryamkin Stecher

Good job re-hashing moves that didn't pan out over a 5 year period. So your bar for a GM over a 5 year period is that they're allowed to miss on one 5th round pick? Have some realistic expectations and look at the big picture. Obviously upgrading the back end is JB's biggest hole right now, but really only Gudbranson had any significant cost and he's been flipped for a guy who looked pretty good with Bo last season. Then you're quoting CA's resident hack Jackson McDonald and somehow reach even further with two of the most toxic haters on twitter (and that's saying something) in "Taj" and "Sir Earl." God, I can't, for the life of me, take any of those guys seriously their entire online personalities are built around crapping on JB. As for cap, there's no need to re-hash Eriksson. As for Sutter and Beagle I think there's a lot of value in having quality match-up C's on every line. Funny that you pump up Bozak's contract as a good deal when he's older, more expensive and not producing much more than a healthy Sutter. Nothing agasint Bozak. Again, healthy, I think that's not a bad place to spend some cap. I think the bottom line is simple: have we lost anyone due to poor cap management? Are there any moves we couldn't make because of it? The closest I've heard is Subban.. but, again, you have a guy getting traded out of conference which usually is how it goes. I think the emphasis of JB's detractors is way off. All the focus is on perceived "contract" and "asset" value, in which he never gets any benefit of the doubt and is constantly scrutinized against cross-conference trades. Further, the perception STILL remains that we're "way off" and should still be in a selling roster players for future assets mode. Nobody ever talks about the Canucks as a group of PLAYERS coming together. If you look at a rebuild as bringing an actual team together there's some key elements that JB has knocked out of the park, or looks to have a good chance of shoring up. 1-2 C punch: Pettersson, Horvat Top scoring W: Boeser Add Miller and Pearson to those 3 and you add in a decent sandpaper element to your top 6 that we haven't had in years, both with 20+ goal potential. Match-up Defensive forwards: Sutter, Beagle, (Gaudette) Physical / Energy players: Virtanen, Roussel, Motte PPQB: Hughes Where we're still missing: Quality top 4. ( Edler - Hughes - ? - ? ) If Myers can be added at a reasonable (6-ish x 5) deal, the holes become a lot smaller. Goalie: Markstrom / Demko Most importantly, the team has fantastic work-ethic and leadership. All these guys listed play "the right way" and none are cherry-picking floaters. Most are still pretty darn young. The heart of this team is strong. They routinely outplay their talent level even in a "rebuilding" phase and critical injuries where they're routinely picked to finish dead last. The guys we've added in Miller (and maybe Myers?) are quality character guys as well.

Your own source called him a 2nd pairing guy and admitted his deployment in Winnipeg behind Trouba / Buff was like a 4/5. Behind two bonafide #1 all/stars. Come on.
-
Did you read his analysis? He could be a good 2RD with a decent partner (Hughes.) Imagine Hughes wheeling up the ice with a big shot to feed. Or getting help clearing the crease. Sounds good to me. That’s exactly what we’re trying to sign. Like the guy (and I) said, not being as good as Trouba or Byfuglien isn’t a crime. He’s not “behind” the left handed d men. That’s just how the pairings break down. The 30% CTOI against top opposition seems to me that he’s pulling his weight. Top pairings are “high 30s” then Myers at 30 is pulling his weight, no?
-
Yuck. I’ve never had a lot of time for Ferraro’s “input” - I’ve never found a single thing he’s said to be particularly insightful for illuminating in any way. It’s also sad how the Vancouver radio guys fluff him up like he’d be the next great GM. (I know these aren’t Vancouver radio guys - which is why they jump to defend pairing Marleau with a first so they can sign Kapanen and the other guy.)
-
We have a lot of dead weight floating around on the cap but that’s where JB needs to get creative and make some room. I’ve had faith in him thus far so I’ll wait and see if he can maneuver the cap at this juncture. He’s done a good job with Edler and acquiring Miller’s contract so far.
-
That article was the saddest bit of “analysis” I’ve ever read. The fact with Myers is that over his career he’s always on the ice for more goals for than against 5v5 and has (overall) pretty even Corsi. He’s also, usually, getting pretty even zone starts. Last year he was negative Corsi but still positive for goals for and against. As a team, the jets were a negative Corsi group and negative goals and goals against 5v5... so Myers actually tilted the ice in their favour if you’re counting goals, which he always seems to do. That he slotted in behind Byfuglien and Trouba (two bonafide “number ones”) is hardly a knock on the guy. Those guys are studs. I don't think he should be paid like a “number one” and at his age the contract length is worth thinking about... but to say he’s worth 4.5 when by all accounts he’s earning his 5.5 he makes already is just silly. If we nab him for anything in the 5-6 million mark for 5 or less years we should be pretty happy with that. We’ll see what he signs for (if he signs with us) but to assume the guy should take a hair cut on his contract when he’s been pretty consistent / solid defender is just classic anti-Benning fear mongering. He’s going to sign for 8 mil! He’s only worth 4! He’s a third pairing guy! Camman.
