  1. 100%. The cap crunch narrative has everyone hoping for a steal but instead Jim left some extra value on the table to pay a fair price and get the guy he wanted. (That’s the way it looks to me, anyways) Honestly, the name of the game is to improve your roster... not win perceived trades on social media. If Miller makes us better than a perceived “value win” then in all for it.
  2. The plan is for it to be a late first though. If we don’t make the playoffs in 2 years, then yeah this trade looks bad. You can’t assume the worst scenario where we bottom out of the playoffs 2 years and then finish dead last (or win the lottery) though. That hasn’t happened either.
  3. 100% This is pretty much it. I’d wager Bo, Brock and Petey don’t want to wait either... same with Edler who signed a sweetheart deal. Our forward group compared to last year with Miller, Pearson and Leivo at LW now looks downright solid. Still lots of cap and some decent prospects for us to wheel in FA or trade and add to the D.
  4. Moving a third and a late 1st for what is intended to be a top line LW on this team isn’t slitting our throats. He’s gambling on making the playoffs within two seasons, that’s not a terrible bet. No one is saying the picks don’t have value but you need to give to get. I’d have preferred D for a move like that but I’m willing to wait for the offseason to play out. This is all just hyperbole.
  5. Maybe the team just got better skill, leadership and toughness wise and fans shouldn’t dwell too much on the 2022 version of the team that 1st round pick is most likely to impact, if at all. Or do. Whatever.
  6. It’s not a bad strategy if money isn’t an issue. A big bonus of draft picks is having ELCs / RFAs to fill out your roster and help manage the cap. If we’re talking the average late 1st pick, Miller probably adds more to the team. You do need to keep that pipeline intact though.
  7. Maybe if fans weren’t so negative he’d have an extension and wouldn’t be pressured into this move then. If that’s the case, I relish the comeuppance bestowed upon the whiners. (honestly, JB has always made moves to attempt to improve the roster and this fits with the majority of his moves. That’s why people whine so much.)
  8. Yeah, Callahan’s recent situation took the heat off of TB a lot too. They aren’t in the same crunch they were a few weeks ago.
  9. Even if you think this is a bad deal strategically, we won’t be able to know how much it hurts for a few years. Miller is the kind of guy who will add a lot to our team. JB nabbing him and Pearson helps add decent if not overwhelming size and scoring to our top 6. I just hope the fans don’t crap all over JT because of this trade. They can hate on Benning as per usual but leave the guy alone. I think he’s on a decent deal for what he brings.
  10. Would have been better to package that conditional first in a Risto package too I guess but who knows what the ask is
  11. We do need to either overpay for Myers or move something else to nab an RHD now though. Kind of a silly move if we go into next year status quo on the back end
  12. Yeah but a 2020 late first (or 2021 first) isn’t making an impact until 2022 anyways. If we’re still rebuilding by then JB will be long gone and the team will probably be selling off Horvat and company for a newer rebuild.
  13. Honestly, I don’t like a first being added as well but it’s been 5 years in the tank and we have some pretty nice pieces ready to roll into the lineup. It’s time to can the “we’re still rebuilding” line of thinking. JB obviously going to make some moves to bolster the D heading into this season. Miller is a strong player and a full season of Pearson along with Bo, Brock and Pettersson that’s a playoff caliber top 6.
  14. I like how JB has locked down the future in net nicely so we can snap up a different position that falls here now that a few teams go goalie.
  15. I like PK as well but that’s a good point. We aren’t good/established enough to take on a potential distraction like that just yet, especially since he really doesn’t fit the current group.
  16. If I’ve learned anything about this management group, we didn’t do it because JB is going to “weaponize” the cap space by adding guys who can help the team.
  17. We should just trade all our players for draft picks and then trade those draft picks away for FUTURE draft picks so we always have all the draft picks.
  18. I’m slowly picking my way through this thread, so apologies if this has been unpacked more by someone else...but this is just another JB era high character pick. Lots of guys get the C due to being the best player on a team, but this kid seems to stand up for teammates and drag them into the fight. Classic, old-school “Canadian” captain. We’re going to love this kid before it’s all said and done... and now really hope Tryamkin returns for some gigantic backup when Pod stirs it up on the ice.
  19. Seider is intriguing for sure but if JB took him at 10 we’d have the usual deluge of “asset management” articles asking why he didn’t trade down if Seider was the target.
