[GDT] 2019 NHL Entry Draft
ilduce39 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
Same with Krebs and the injury. Too bad for Peyton, he sounds like a beauty... and whoever gets Caufield late likely is landing a steal. -

That’s such a terrible reason not to take a kid from a certain country. Tryamkin, Goldy and Pod are all completely different people, players and situations. -

[Rumour] Canucks aggressively pursuing Tyson Barrie
ilduce39 replied to 3rdGenCanuck's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
To be fair, I’ve had that thought a few times. “if we trade for another small pmd, we will probably m be shipping out Stecher cuz we ain’t moving Hughes.” The 1st swap is pretty stock trade proposal... so this might not be plagiarism just following the usual path of most trade proposals. That said, they get waaaaay more for Barrie even as a 1 year rental so, nah. -
[Rumour] Peter Chiarelli could join the Canucks

Bahaha all the people griping about the front office being too small and no way dim Jim and Weisbrod could handle it all... This is worth it just to see them freak. -
[Rumour] - Re-signing Edler to Canucks
ilduce39 replied to Squamfan's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
3 years is obviously ideal, but that means 4 is pretty close to ideal. If the “worst case” scenario of 4x5.5 without expansion exemption is true it’s a solid deal. -
[Rumour] - Re-signing Edler to Canucks
ilduce39 replied to Squamfan's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Very true. I even slipped into that mindset briefly.. and though I clarified it was a big “if” I still feel a bit ashamed. if he signs a deal like the one reported I owe Edler an apology. Also, full credit to JB. This move plus the Horvat one have been full value. Funny how it’s easier to keep that amount down when dealing with hometown talent and an exciting future. -
Like the comparisons to the Leafs, they're going to be skewed due to a lottery win. Having a talent like Kaapo or Matthews fall into your lap makes things look pretty rosy, let alone having guys like Trouba and Fox use contract situations to tilt the ice in your favour. Good for the Rags but when we get a top pairing D fleecing his own team to come to us, a top prospect fleecing his own team to come to us and a 2 OA draft pick we can have a fair comparison. I did like them jumping up in the draft to nab Miller though.

He's always been able to get deals done, so I expect some action this offseason. I also expect people to think we overpaid with contract and assets be it in UFA or trade... for me, the proof will be in the pudding of how the season unfolds. It's looking less and less likely that he'll be able to land one of the bigger fish (which some people will be relieved about) so JB goes back to the bargain bin where, admittedly, he hasn't had a lot of success with on defence. Still, there's Juolevi/Hughes/Woo/Tryamkin in the wings if he can just get us through the season. There will be always different opportunities as the year progresses. Maybe the bargain bin bandaids will end up being the right call.

These guys, like most UFAs, won't be worth their full contracts. Still, no team fully maximizes their cap space / talent. You can slightly overpay a bit to shore up a position of need, especially at key spots that are hard to acquire. Navigating declining players on long term deals is part of the job of being a GM. If we're all-in if/when these contracts become prohibitive, jettisoning them is part of the job and guys get it done all the time. On that note, a part of me seriously hates our fanbase because if we do sign Gardiner or Myers, twitter, HF and local media will crap all over them even if they're reasonably good players being paid 1.5 mil too much for a year or two too long. They honestly don't have a chance. I know most fans will be fair, but the loudest ones are already complaining about these guys and they aren't even on the team yet (and likely won't be.) Personally, I don't really see the benefit of guys like Gardiner (unless we lose Edler) or Zaitsev, but I'm willing to see how they do in a Canucks uniform before I throw a fit.. let alone over a rumour we might sign them.

I'm on the other side of it with EK but I can see where people are coming from. An 11.5 on the books means you can't have any Eriksson / Lucic / Neal type deals lying around and, yes, it would be a bad look in 5-7 years. I still think you can build around it, for a premier player who's on the ice for almost half the game. Anyways, we aren't getting EK now. I agree with Stawns that Edler is extremely critical if we want to keep making progress.. yet I also think JB needs to ensure it's a reasonable deal. How JB navigates this offseason should have huge lasting effects.

If he does leave it totally sours me to Edler. He’s always been a weird, quiet guy but after all the “I want to stay” hubbub if he’s willing to walk just as the team is on the cusp of turning the tide with a new young core, he’s a loser. He’s within his rights, but it’s a weak move. If he wanted to chase a cup he should have waived his NTC at the deadline and done exactly that. Again, though, I don’t want to get too worked up here. We’ll see how it all plays out. Best case scenario he signs a 3 year NTC (but no NMC) deal at fair market value (6.5 mil?). If his agent is making him play a bit of hardball I’m glad Jim isn’t getting pushed around.
