  1. I agree. Call his bluff. If he wants to check out UFA then he can fill his boots. He’ll either come to his senses and circle back to a fair deal or he can go. I’d prefer to have him back but LHD is an organizational strength with Hughes and Olli, plus it’s a lot easier to fill via FA or trade. Brendon Dillon wouldn’t fill edler’s skates completely but I hear SJ needs to clear a bit of cap and he’d add some snarl to the left side.
  2. Neither Loui nor Beagle have NMC’s. ..and what would the “Tom Sestito” analogue to this situation be? Oh look a tweet about the Canucks. Now to hurl myself to the floor like a damned toddler and whine about a worst case hypothetical situation based on unsubstantiated speculation. Damn you Benning.
  3. I would have done 7 x 11 easily for Karlsson, assuming he was cleared by medical staff. I think most teams have a combination of blah players who make around 11 mil who don’t make nearly the difference Karlsson does. Oh well. Sharks aren’t going to be sunk by this, it’s the combination of Thornton/Pavelski/Burns/Vlasic etc etc getting old that will make this kind of a silly signing.
  4. I see the reasoning of your overall post and I'm not directing this necessarily at you, but I've seen this line a few times and I don't see how adding a good piece now somehow jeopardizes us being a contender in 2-3 years. If we're going to be a contender in that timeframe, we already have enough pieces to keep us out of the basement until then and thus won't get those deluxe draft picks. IE if Pettersson, Horvat, Hughes, Boeser, Marky/Demko, Stech, Virtanen and maybe Pearson, Gaudette, Juolevi are good enough to be the core of a contender, it's already done... we're a bubble team when healthy the way Green has this team going. Adding a late-20s stud like Panarin or Karlsson wouldn't jeopardize a run 2 years from now.. they'd be key components of one. IMO adding a guy like useless Lucic and his immovable contract to "weaponize cap space" would jeopardize us being a contender in 2-3 years more than anything. I still think Loui is easier to move, considering the hubbub this offseason. Get that done another way. In short, I still think JB needs to try and improve the team this offseason any way he can. We have enough of a new core that we are unlikely (without serious lottery help) to have those tap-in drafted elite players. I'm sure JB and the scouting staff have another trick or two up their sleeves, but the way I see it our path to contender-hood is still going to need a few good UFA signings and / or trades. What those look like are still open to debate but we aren't just going to simply draft our way to a championship squad from this point.
  5. If we can make Loui float away with a 3rd round pick or B prospect sweetener to a cap floor team and throw that money (plus maybe half a mil more) at Myers I still think that’s the easiest way to get better. If we’re willing to sink that money into another useless player like Lucic, why not spend it on a guy who actually makes our team better at our weakest position? I’d do Loui+3rd for a 9 goal, 30 point 29 year old #4 RHD.
  6. One thing’s for certain, there’s no easy fixes for JB this summer. He’s going to get roasted for any UFA moves cap-wise and likely in the trade market asset wise. Maybe the best bet is just to stand pat... but darn, it feels like madness going into another year with the same D (or a minor shuffling of the deck.)
  7. I don’t think we have a lot of value in trade chips, so the one thing I’d like to see JB chase is a top 4 RHD like Ristolainen and, honestly, i know he’s been dragged through the mud over various forums but I’m still fine with Myers, especially since that means we’ll still have Tanev in the mix. I’m also still more than willing to risk a Karlsson signing, unlikely as it is. We have a bunch of guys on both sides capable of playing decent 3rd pair minutes so unless it’s a fit in the top 4 I don’t think it’s worth it. Tanev/Myers or some mix around Ristolainen/Stecher gives us enough for a playoff push on the right side for a year while we wait to see what Woo and Tryamkin bring. Looking at it like that, I think Stralman becomes a lot more intriguing as well, especially if he comes with minimal term. The left side, IMO, doesn’t need to touched as long as Eagle doesn’t leave the nest. Edler and Hughes both have 40+ point potential so unless they want to find a defensive-defenceman to replace Hutton and partner with Stech on the bottom pair I don’t see the value using what trade chips we have to chase a Ghost unless it’s a steal of a deal.
  8. Benning’s drafting is better than Gillis’ even without the top picks. Not to mention Gradin (and Delorme, who I’ve seen credited with the Pettersson pick) worked for Gillis as well.
  9. I said the first part, so I guess I agree and I don’t think you understood what I meant with the second.
  10. There’s nothing wrong with having a discussion about how a human target game like dodgeball could potentially turn into a bullying situation. It doesn’t take a lot of imagination to think is ways it could go badly. That said, many games and activities can be conducive to bullying without some foresight and management from the teacher (or self management from the students.) The crazy “the left has gone too far” comments are cringe worthy. There’s nothing wrong with opening a discussion about what works and what doesn’t in a school setting. In all honesty, it’s pretty easy to run a PE class according to the curriculum without doing anything resembling dodge ball.. in fact, it’s a bit of a stretch to include it. With regards to sports, there are plenty of situations where hazing, abusive coaching, outdated/dangerous drills, etc have gone too far and traditional practices needed to change. The ultimate irony is conservative parents are just as (read: more) likely to helicopter in, touch down and complain about their little darling being picked on or the teacher/coach letting things get out of hand. It’s easy to gripe about the sad state of the world until it’s your kid coming home with the broken glasses or bloody nose.
  11. Lucic and Puljujarvi both suck. I’d rather just try and offload Eriksson to a team out east with tons of cap space.
  12. “Boeser ended up breaking the transverse process on his L4 vertebrae but thankfully he will be able to resume his hockey career in 2018-19.” https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/canucks-brock-boeser-reflects-scary-injury-ended-rookie-season/sn-amp/
  13. Yeah, this idea has disaster written all over it. I’m sure Loui isn’t thrilled with the vitriol he draws from the fan base but I can see Lucic absolutely imploding because of it. There’s no way he lives up to his contract and our fan base always fixates on the $. What a side show that would be.
  14. That list is pretty telling in how many faux ppqb types we’ve tried to acquire. I wonder how much Hughes changes the target back to either a true do-it-all number 1 or a rugged shutdown guy who we also chased a bit in Sbisa and Guddy. I think there’s value in a Myers acquisition as a big shot opposite Hughes on a top notch second pair.. but that would still leave a big hole at the top of the lineup and JB’s work wouldn’t be done. Nabbing Karlsson / Trouba / Risto changes the game. If we can sign Edler and pair him with any of those 3, we have a do-it-all top pairing for the next 2-3 years. Should be a pretty interesting offseason... I’m being a bit impatient but I’ll be disappointed with some half-measures as well... at that point we may as well hold steady and save the cap space until Tryamkin possibly returns or we have the assets to acquire the next Trouba or sign the next Karlsson.
  15. I was expecting a bottle of vodka placed under a cardboard box held up by a twig attached to some string.
  16. I still think if you can keep his overall cap hit down and buy a few UFA years, Brock is worth investing long term in. In a rookie season and a sophomore year coming off a broken back he’s put up solid numbers. The coach obviously likes him and at 6’1 210, great creativity and willingness to play the two way game I think he’s a very nice fit with Pettersson long term on our top line. I know wingers aren’t the hardest thing to lock in, but if you can save a few bucks going long term “hometown” deal before he really breaks out I think they should go for it.
  17. I agree - any of those 9 I named drop to us I’d prefer them plus Podkozlin who I forgot as well. Krebs dropping out though means one of them not fitting the Canucks plans makes it that much more likely we take a defenceman... unless they’re high on newhook or Kaliyev
  18. That’s exactly how I was feeling before... but without Krebs, now it’s: Hughes Kakko Byram Dach Turcotte Boldy Zegras Cozens Caufield as 9 I agree go before any other d. They could still go with Krebs and admittedly I haven’t looked too hard into Newhook or Kaliyev. Just feels like less of a reach to go with defenceman with Krebs likely dropping.
  19. With Krebs down, I think our likelihood of taking a D man just went up significantly. Maybe best for the organization in the long run.
  20. Gillis: 37 Draft picks NHL’ers: Hodgson(10OA) Schroeder(22OA) Connauton(3rd Round) Gaunce(26 OA) Hutton (5th round) Horvat (9OA) Bo is obviously the darling of this bunch. Future captain and all around stud. Schroeder and Gaunce are non issues, though played NHL games. Hodgson was a decent pick but traded for Kassian in a terrible trade. Connauton was traded with a 2nd round pick for Derek Roy “baby” (lol). Hutton seems like a nice kid and good value for a 5th rounder. Benning (34 picks) Virtanen(6OA) McCann(24 OA) Demko (2nd Round) Tryamkin (3rd Round) Forsling (5th round) Boeser (23 OA) Gaudette (5th round) Pettersson (5OA) Hughes (6OA) Benning already has more, and higher quality, NHL talent in less picks. Pettersson and Hughes are higher than anything Gillis got a crack at but also seem to be absolute studs for the picks. Jake is underwhelming thus far, but is if nothing else an NHL’er. Getting rid of them, there’s still more value in Benning’s drafts. McCann and Boeser are infinitely better than Schroeder or Gaunce in the “late 1st” categories. McCann was moved, but if Pearson plays the way he did last season that’s solid value in a roundabout way. Gaudette and Tryamkin both have pretty good upside, even after the big guys departure all signs point to him giving it another go after his contract is up. Forsling was moved away for a poor return. This isn’t even including the 3rd overall prospect pool Benning is sitting on: Juolevi, Madden, Woo, Lind, Rathbone, Lockwood, DiPietro... Brisebois got some NHL time last year. Is there another NHL’er or two in there? Pretty clear that JB has been a lot better at this aspect of the job, even with the benefit of higher picks.
  21. “Gillis was better at drafting than Benning” is the hot take nobody asked for. I don’t have much of a bone to pick with Gillis - credit where it’s due, he put the finishing touches on the best team we’ve ever seen. He left the prospect pool absolutely barren but I’d take that for a cup any day. I hated the Schneider / Luongo fiasco. That was bush league and my main reason for wanting him gone. That Schneider trade does look good in hindsight with the way Bo has blossomed, however. Gillis didn’t just get unlucky drafting Hodgson and his illness, though.. he drafted Hodgson and traded him for useless Zack Kassian who, lets face it, never looked good. That’s a major swing and a miss too. That’s 10OA value down the toilet for a guy who Jake just matched in goals (4 less points). And Jake looks to be on the upswing and the better overall player. So if we’re whining about Jake in the JB vs Gillis debate, the Kassian deal, IMO makes it a wash at this point.
  22. Oh yeah. But give the man his due, his pseudo-intellectual crapping on canadian culture is easily one of the best trolling efforts I’ve seen on this board.
  23. Brock is the real deal. Not a physical freak... but solidly built, brings elite offence, plays the right way, high character. I love the idea of building a team around him with Bo and Pettersson. Really hoping JB can get him locked up for 8 years at under 8 million. Huge cornerstone piece.
  24. I’d put the 10th in play plus whatever spare parts (Tanev, whatever) to snag Trouba (or Risto) I’d also let Woo go in that scenario. Adding that young/prime RDH piece is critical right now. Not sure I’d go 10th + Juolevi though. That might be too steep and feels like we’re selling way low on Olli. Honestly, these exercises always make me double back to Karlsson or Myers where we’re adding for free. What we pay extra in salary for them we’re making up in that 10th + prospects entry level and RFA years.
