  1. Yeah, it’s always a concern but are his injuries related to being small? I’m not sure groin and ankle stuff is from being a smaller guy. Anyways, I doubt he signs.. just pointing out that we still need that #1 D and if we could get one for nothing in FA it’d be fantastic.
  2. On the other hand, Burns is 5 years older than EK and shows how truly elite players kind of defy the “age related decline” we see in most. If the doctors clear EK, I think his age isn’t even much of an issue for a 6 or 7 year deal.
  3. I think Provost and Theo covered my thoughts re: development. We don’t really have the RHD prospects to take time from. If anything, taking some of the load off of Tanev might help extend his career. As far as competition, I don’t understand the “3 year” number... for me, it’s 3 years if we don’t sign a guy like Karlsson, assuming everything goes right. With EK I think we’re playoff worthy next season and a whole lot closer to contender status the year after, again, assuming some things pan out. Karlsson isn’t just a future HOF RHD in his late 20s, early 30s... he’s exactly what this team has been missing so I think his impact will be larger than when added to SJ who already had Burns. He’s going to add 10-15 points to our top line players, especially considering Hughes and Juolevi will be transitioning in during that time period as well. I’m admittedly getting super optimistic about adding EK turning us into contenders... but that path becomes a whole lot more clear with him than without... where we’re still missing that top D man that I can’t fathom us finding outside of sheer luck at the draft table.
  4. I don’t think it’s likely to happen but I’m still all in on signing Karlsson. Especially if, say, Boldy drops to us on draft day we’re looking at as strong a team as we’ve ever had if Karlsson signs.
  5. Yeah the big bad green energy lobby is making it nearly impossible for honest, hard working oil and coal workers to scrape by.
  6. True. I like to think I deserve a pardon for advocating an end to the whole vicious cycle but I’ll abide the court’s decision!
  7. I don’t really care about this guy and his stupid meals but the irony of people complaining about complainers always gets me.
  8. I honestly forgot that Pettersson wasn’t a lock to play C before last year. I remember now being quite doubtful, especially after preseason, if he’d play C this past season. The kid is unreal.
  9. Agreed. The good news is that we’re going to get another nice piece to the puzzle. I’m softening on taking a D man (I love the idea of building from the net out and RHD guys like Seider / Soderstrom are pretty tempting). I’d still love to land Boldy in particular but Krebs or Zegras or any of those higher ranked guys who might fall are appealing. Even Pod if Benning thinks he’s worth the risk.
  10. I agree. It’d take a king’s ransom (see: their 8th OA) for me to consider taking on Lucic. At that price, though, I don’t see why they wouldn’t just trade him to a team not in their own conference. Despite the “us and the oilers have players signed to crappy contracts” I can’t see how there is a deal that makes sense here. The most I’d do is Loui+3rd for Lucic+8OA and he’d have to agree to waive that NMC. Loui’s inverted contract will solve itself in time... either to a cheap team or that’s a great point he’s likely to leave his actual $ on the table to go play in Sweden.
  11. That doesn’t make sense that it’s somehow better. Don’t the individuals want to identify as male or female - man or woman - different from their assigned gender at birth? “Trans” may be technically true but I don’t see the problem with just labelling them as man or woman. Labelling them as just “trans” seems like it’s pushing away an already dangerously marginalized group,
  12. This is 100% true, Alf. And while armchair pundits can dream up scary stories of men just randomly declaring “I’m a woman” to go win a tournament, that’s not what the trans movement is about at all. I think it’s way more likely someone would do this as a publicity stunt or a misguided and uninformed attempt to make a statement about what’s wrong with the trans movement than a hair-brained scheme to just make some money. In the end, though, if most of the “concern” being proposed is about people using legitimate trans athletes as a loophole to make some money, then checks and balances need to be put in place to stop them just like any other cheaters who use performance enhancing drugs, etc.
  13. If we’re looking to take on a huge contract I’d rather we just take a big run at signing Karlsson or Panarin. At least they wouldn’t cost any assets.
  14. I hear you.. It’s no sure thing by any means but Hughes will likely get some votes just based on point totals. I think he works his way to the 2nd pairing with significant PP time and O zone starts with the Pettersson line. “Easier” minutes, especially if we can find him a decent partner in that role. He could score 30-45 doing that and should end up in the conversation as a rookie, IMO. Bonus points because he’ll make some highlight worthy plays to broaden his exposure. Demko would need something to go wrong with Marky and THEN have a Calder worthy season behind weak D. It’s a much longer shot, for sure, but he sure looked good his last few starts. I’m not saying either are going to win the Calder.. but I’m not just naming some random rookies either. These guys have the pedigree and played at times last season at a Calder-conversation level. It’s exciting.
  15. That’s not much of an answer. Science changes all the time due to new information, not “politics.” What I’ve been taught and found myself is pretty supportive of transgender people with regards to the science behind it. In other words - what they are experiencing is real and should be validated. I dont know much much of the politics behind WHO but I do know a few people involved as medical professionals, mental health professionals and other pHD level academics and none of them give two whits about “political pressure.” They’re going to argue what they found was correct. The UK’s national health service: “Gender dysphoria is a recognised medical condition, for which treatment is sometimes appropriate. It's not a mental illness.” Other sources I’ve seen may regard “gender dysphoria” as a mental illness but define it as the negative feelings associated around gender identity, not gender identity itself. As a treatment, hormone therapy and sex reassignment are options. In the end, it’s an obviously complicated topic with a lot of nuance along the spectrum. The point is, “science” seems to agree it’s not something to be scoffed away as a product of a dysfunctional society as you’re oft to do.
  16. You’ll need to point me to the current “science” that says transgenderism is an “illness” which suggests that it’s something to be cured.
  17. Yeah, it’s tough to know where to start since it’s such a complex issue. There’s the differentiation in ages and between rec sports and sports with money and scholarships attached to them.... the impact of hormone therapy and gender reassignment surgery vs the advantage of being born genetically “male”.. it’s a lot to digest. Also, as someone involved in a few different youth sports in BC, I’ve never heard or witnessed an issue with this yet. I have a fairly strong suspicion a few instances are being cherry picked and broadcast as “killing female sports” for a bit of fearmongering. Plus, honestly, give the girls some credit. The average championship-caliber high school / collegiate female athlete isn’t someone you can just roll out of bed and beat in their chosen sport just because you were born with a wang. If trans athletes are winning it’s because they’re putting in a lot of time and effort to train. It’s not just a “hey I want to win so I’ll compete as a girl” situation.
  18. No kidding. For a chuckle, check out Ben Shapiro’s hissy fit on the BBC when Andrew Neil (a conservative himself) didn’t let him prop up his usual “right vs left, you’re being biased” victim card. On topic: I think there’s a rational discussion to be had around trans athletes but some of the people dying to have this conversation don’t have the understanding of transgenderism itself to have the discussion on trans athletics.
  19. What sucks about this is that there has been some research into how many picks turn out to be top players vs just making the nhl. I always reference that cullen article and it basically says the 5th and 6th picks are close to 50/50 at being top 6 / top 4 forwards or defenders in the nhl - in other words no sure things. While Jake and Olli haven’t made the bar yet, Pettersson and Boeser (at the 20s where it’s more like 30% go on to top 6 status) show that JB is at least batting the average. I’d say even better considering Brock and Petey are better than “top 6” - id consider them first liners. Then there’s Hughes who looks likely to hit as a top-4 defenceman. Jake is a a 3rd liner right now but a lock as an NHL’er. Olli’s strong showing in Liiga and the AHL plus injuries leave him as an uncertain rather than unlikely in my book. The point is, the rebuild is only “set back two years” if you expect every top 10 pick to be a lock as an impact player - something the odds show isn’t realistic at all unless you’re drafting top-2.
  20. At this point of the rebuild we’re sitting at a top 3 prospect pool and back to back Calder trophy finalists. Next year we could have both Hughes and Demko up for the Calder as well. The pool should remain deep with the number 10 plus a couple extra depth picks. I’d be surprised if JB doesn’t make a splash to try and add other pick or two for the home crowd. Honestly, it might be time to move on from griping about 2014/2015. Things are looking up.
  21. I’d still kick the tires on Myers, unless the Risto acquisition somehow didn’t cost Tanev. Adding 12’10 and 70+ points of RHD would change the complexion of the team in a hurry.
  22. If only Demko, Tanev and a 2nd would do it.
  23. Risto would be a huge add. Any true top pairing RHD sets the table for us.
  24. Grinds my gears to no end as well. The real questions are: is the team getting better? is it sustainable? (and for how long?) is there any sign of turmoil/cancer that could spoil the team? For me, the team is getting better... with the youth of the new “core,” our cap situation and limited NTC’s I think it’s sustainable with the right moves and they seem like a rock solid, mature and focused group.
