[Report] Canucks will not qualify Derrick Pouliot
ilduce39 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Those guys can dish it out with a shovel but can’t take a teaspoon worth of criticism. -
This guy is my K’Andre Miller of this draft. Would love to have him. Don’t want him at 10, don’t want to trade down and don’t see how we can get another first.
-
I agree with that as well. How many true top talent Russians don’t ever at least try the NHL? I think the best players want to play in the best league... and if Podkozlin’s personality reflects his on ice play he’s the type who wants to compete at the highest level. Even that big softie Tryamkin is likely to come back when his K contract is up, I’m sure. That said, it does add some element of risk and is another factor to consider.
-
It would suck, for sure... and I agree if the outlook is similar I’m taking the NA/Scandinavian kid. My thought is that if Pod is actually in that top 3 talent range, a head above the others and drops to us, I’m in a gambling mood. We could use another home run if JB and his team are confident. Where I’m a lot more torn is on the defensive side of things. I love the idea of drafting D at this stage but they still feel like a reach to me in this draft because I’m sure a highly regarded forward is going to be available at 10.
-
To each their own, I guess. I like the idea of our scouts knocking them out of the park. I also feel Pod refusing to report is unlikely to happen and still leaves the club more outs, such as moving his rights, versus a kid just not developing in the first place. If JB thinks he’s getting a top 3 talent at #10 with a little added risk of Russian flightiness, I’m all for it. That said, I doubt he drops to us.
-
Not really. A miss is a miss... and I’d rather our scouts be accurate on a player’s potential. Jokes about the “Russian” debate aside, if JB and his team take him at 10 I’ll be happy.
-
As much as we hyped Tryamkin, this kid has a different pedigree. 1st rounders also, rightly or wrongly, get a little more slack in an organization. I can’t see it turning Tryamkin unless Pod is just a plain, old fashioned bust. I don’t relish the talking points though. That alone might be enough to let him fall past us.
-
If Podkolzin drops to 10 and we snap him up I’ll be far from disappointed. Sounds like a stud.

Forgot to mention in my post... Botch on the radio with Rintoul and Debron a few years back was my favourite sports talk radio. Littlest Hobo trivia. Loved it.
-
Terrible news, guy was so young. Ill miss his commentary on the Canucks - didn’t usually agree but that was the fun part. RIP, Botch.

Lets open this to discussion Mike Gillis returning President

Huh? First of all: Hughes. Then, Juolevi. Also, there’s players like Virtanen, Demko and Gaudette who may have played this year but could all play a more prominent role next season. Its also pessimistic to assume a decline in Pettersson... Brock has a full summer of training to get ready and Bo hasn’t stopped improving since he broke into the league... now he has Pearson to play with. I understand not all guys improve in a linear fashion but there’s way more than one bullet in the chamber. Where do you get our only chance of improvement coming from Brisebois and MacEwen (who are perfectly nice depth pieces.) -
Everything about that post was a bad take, but this is just plain laughable.
-
I’m no scout but it sure feels like the forwards are getting a lot more hype than the d men this draft... which leads me to believe you’re more likely to snag a first liner there than a top pairing guy on d. It’s pretty much that simple as to why I’m leaning forward this draft. I think it also helps to your size point... Caufield seems like a special finisher, but there’s some big to decent sized forwards who could fall in the 8-12 range as well and they all have fantastic upside. A 5’11 guy like Krebs has a 6’4 brother, too. (Not that id draft a guy banking on a late growth spurt.) I just think this isn’t the draft to go trying to fill a positional need of RD when we still need one more impact forward (at least.)
-
This list makes me a little sad. Hopefully one of Boldy or Cozens are there for us. I won’t cry with Caufield, Krebs or Soderstrom though.
-
Man, if Karlsson is at all interested I think you have to make a serious 7 year, 10+ Million pitch to him. The way Edler has been playing the past 2 seasons those two would make a fantastic pairing. I doubt he’s interested, but damn. Edler-Karlsson Hughes-Tanev Hutton(Juolevi)-Stecher would be pretty fun to watch feeding the forward core. Add Ferland up front. It’s a pipe dream (and maybe missing one more skilled forward) but that would still be a fun group to watch.

JB: I’ll make the phone call about the 1st overall pick
ilduce39 replied to Generational.EP40's topic in Canucks Talk
I swear the price for “first overall” will likely be a whole lot more than the price for “Jack Hughes” in about a year. If we really need another brother combo let’s just wait. -
I won’t cry if we go Soderstrom but I agree with this post and have to assume there will be a stronger forward sitting when our turn comes up. We could still use a blue chip winger up front. JB might have to work the phones to land his RHD.
-
Would be pretty fun to have Boeser and Boldy flanking Pettersson for the next decade.
-
Can’t expect any help from the stupid league. Something good will fall to 10.
-
I suppose it’s fair to quibble about the use of “reach” if you’re talking about our pick... which is likely 9-10 not 12 where Soderstrom is slotted iirc. I’m just banking on one of the higher rated kids falling to us... and the fact there’s some highly thought of forwards in that range as well. In all fairness, I’d love Soderstrom too but it really feels like we take another forward here. As as an aside, positionally, we’re pretty starved for RD in the system after Woo but at this point JB needs to fill that through a trade or FA IMO. If we take Soderstrom it’s because JB thinks he’s the clear cut BPA at our pick and that, again, seems unlikely if we’re at 1-2 like 112 has guaranteed.
