  1. This doesn’t really surprise me, either. Garland has a significant ( if, imo, fair ) cap hit for 3 more seasons. 15 mil worth of cap is just a huge commitment under the current situation. The higher ceiling guy in Boeser or the 1 year guy in Beau were always the ones way easier to move.
  2. Paying to get rid of Garland is ridiculous. Once the cap starts to move back up he regains + value. Legitimate very good 5v5 player despite playing on disastrous teams for his whole career. If we move him and *pay* to do so it’s a terrible move.
  3. Severson was always a pipe dream - and one with a lot of red flags at that. Guy had whipping boy du jour written all over him.
  4. Seems like some of the takes on here are just being made from a place of trying to protect themselves from disappointment. We probably don’t land Peeke but it doesn’t mean he’ll go for a king’s ransom. Probably just to a team with cap room for a B+ prospect or other non-prime parts. Also, “no one will trade for with us because they know the bind we’re in” only goes so far. Between Boeser, Garland and Beauvillier those are 3 productive players who make most team’s middle 6 better. Do teams have the cap space to take them on right now? Maybe not. But that doesn’t mean we’d need to - or will - be giving up significant futures to move them out. If we get desperate, there’s the Chicago pick swap on the table. Rumour has it fairly positive dropping 8 spots would likely grease a trade with Chicago. That’s the price (and I think it’s too high, would rather stand pat) but it’s not like we’re sinking our 1st just to move those guys. Get real.
  5. Assuming Peeke is returning the 11OA is closer to ridiculous than thinking there could be a trade being made around one of our wingers. Im not sure they’d want Garland considering little Johnny is already there but come on - #4-5 RHD aren’t some magical resource because they’re kinda big.
  6. Yep. Adding Hronek, Bear and guys like Hirose creates some interesting questions on the back end. I wouldn’t be upset if we can’t move Myers and just roll out what we have. (But won’t be upset if we keep making moves either.)
  7. Yeah, Myers needs to be on the move before we trade for RD this offseason. Otherwise we wait a year - and that might be best with a lot more cap flexibility upcoming.
  8. The Athletic just had a similar mock draft but they had us passing on Leonard to take Wallinder. Would be very tough to pass on Leonard even if they see him as a winger.
  9. Yep - his inability to identify competent d-men was probably the biggest weakness from a pro scouting point of view that wasn’t strong to begin with. Guys like Dorsett, Roussel and Ferland were pretty good players before injury.
  10. Dorsett, Roussel, Gudbranson, Schenn, Ferland, Sbisa, Prust, Tryamkin, Poolman, Sutter, Virtanen, Miller, Pedan… going hard after Lucic. I’m sure there are others - and no not every acquisition was a heavy player - but you can see the type of team Benning was *trying* to build. Some bad ideas but also a healthy dose of bad luck in there with injuries.
  11. You should be allowed to sign as many guys as you want as long as the roster is cap compliant on any given game. Instead of fans grumbling about veteran so and so making too much it would be kind of exciting to see them get into the odd game and make something happen.
  12. Old man Rutherford is gonna sign guys until we’re 20 mil over the cap and just send the league to voice mail when they call about it. It’s a bold strategy.
  13. Brock seems poised for a “comeback” which is odd to say considering he basically matched a career high for points last season. I think management has the right of it here. Myers and Beauvillier both only have a year left. If we’re going to try and shoehorn someone out the door it’s one or both of those two - but even then only in a hockey trade. I actually think we can roll our current D out and make the playoffs - but I also think we see closer to 2021 OEL. If we don’t make any big moves and eat the Beau / Myers / Pearson contracts I’ll be okay with it but I do hope we find a way to bring in a veteran 3C. Nothing flashy. But a good, veteran, defensive / PK guy. That actually works out. Unlike Dickinson and Lazar. (Something tells me with Tocchet and his staff this will be a lot more likely.)
  14. What was going on when this poll was taken? I know this place was a lot more Benning - friendly than most but that’s a crazy amount of support. For awhile there with Petey-Hughes-Boeser-Miller-Horvat-Demko the skies sure seemed bright. Could still be a fun upcoming season as long as we don’t implode the first two months of the year.
  15. There’s a reason the organization sees this as the #1 target this offseason. Can’t see us starting the year with Dries, Aman or Joshua tarting at 3C by choice, even though I like them all as organizational depth. You’d have to hope there’s a hockey trade out there for Sissons or Dvorak.. or we clear a bit of cap to sign Pius Suter or David Kampf like the athletic boys suggested. I remember reading that one day Raty might be a pretty good 3C but he’s got a lot to cooking to do first.
  16. There’s a rumour around the pick swap between us and Chicago. After digging into the draft a little more I’m less inclined to take Chicago up on it, though. At 11 we’re going to land an elite winger prospect or a very good C or D prospect - with top 10 upside most drafts. At 19 the crop looks a lot more “normal” for the pick range - it’s a big gamble that I’m hoping we stay away from unless they really know something I don’t.
  17. You’re probably right! I kind of purposefully listed C’s and D’s besides Michkov just because I was curious who’d be available if the wingers weren’t taken. I know Leonard and Benson and maybe a few others might end up on the wing but they’re all listed as C/W at least. Just my preference. Some very intriguing W’s in the top 15 as well even if I’d rather go C / D if we can.
  18. Bedard Fantilli Carlsson Smith and Michkov go top 5 that leaves one of: Leonard Reinbacher Dvorsky Moore Danielson —- ASP Simashev Benson id prefer anyone in the top 10 I’ve listed as a preference… but if they’re all gone would be happy with any of those last 3 as well.
  19. I keep thinking Benson is going to fall to us and try to get excited about it but I just can’t. This is already a roster devoid of physical talent. Adding a guy who’s smaller / slower even if he’s elite at everything else just feels like a bad fit. I know that’s not how you’re supposed to draft - so I’ll be happy enough if we land him - but really hoping for someone with a little more size or speed.
  20. The more I sit on it, the more I’m leaning C. Dvorsky, Danielson or Moore could very well be around. They’ll be ready by the time Miller starts to slow down and needs to be shifted out to wing.
  21. For sure - especially with NYI’s uncertainty around where they would finish. (I’m also happy with the Hronek return fwiw, just too bad we couldn’t have both.)
  22. As a counterpoint, signing Petey long term at that point would have left him in that awkward “miller” territory where he’s signing his next deal at 29/30 - after years of peak production but still at his peak. Then you’re asking yourself how many good years vs how many decline years are you getting. The nice thing about going long on Petey now is he’s not likely to suffer much age related regression - he’s going to be worth every penny for the entire contract but his final one should make a lot more sense as he’ll be firmly in the back 9 of his career - not in his prime. Chris Gear alluded to something like that awhile ago. And people were already talking 10 mil for him when we did the bridge so while there would have been savings - for sure - how much? I guess we’ll see what he goes for!
  23. What a list compared to other ones. You’re right - this draft could really make or break for a few teams. Would have been nice to have an extra 1st.
  24. Garland has also shown the ability to drive offence from the 3rd line and will be more difficult to move / buy out because of his longer contract. I really think it’s Beau or Brock on the move this offseason and if I’m being honest I hope it’s Beau as I can see Brock bouncing back.
  25. Danielson or Moore would be fantastic additions. I’d also love Reinbacher. The wingers or ASP could be great but those 3 just scream can’t-miss at key positions.
