On the flip, he can practice his face offs..... in practice with Manny and against stalwarts like Bo, Sutter and Beagle. Id wager faceoffs don’t matter much because most guys land pretty close to 50%. Most regular C’s are at least in the mid 40’s which means maybe they lose 2 or 3 more than they win a game. If you’re tossing up 0’s I’d bet you’d see a tangible impact. As a kid breaking into the league, even a super star kid, why throw that anchor around his neck when he could be a complete stud as a winger? There’s still team dynamics and it’s never a good feeling to get special treatment when you’re trying to earn the respect of your teammates... who are still trying to win no matter what the fan’s expectations are.

To be fair, that’s not true at all. Pettersson wasn’t much for faceoffs last season either. I know a lot is riding on him panning out as a C man, but if he’s going to play it this season it seems likely to be in a super sheltered role with at least one other linemate who is experienced taking draws. Everyone is so sensitive, geez.
-
Not to be negative but we’re sounding like Edmonton fans here. What was Pettersson’s FO% last night? Like, 0%? Pretty good chance he needs to either play wing or be paired with a winger who can at least hold their own in the dot. Winning 40+% in the NHL is a far cry from not winning a single draw in a prospects game. (I’m not actually sure what his numbers were, but it sure didn’t look like he won many, of any.)

That’s not a bad take. If we weren’t so inundated with vets and waiver-eligible guys he’d be a shoo-in. I’d love to see Gaudette with the big club even if it meant some waiving or some trading.

Well. Here’s another one of those eerily quiet nightfalls. -

I know calling town vibes isn’t super helpful in this game, but I totally felt Aladeen’s indecision at the end of last round. If that was a ruse, it’s a new one and well played. -

Both totally fair. My idea with the BJ vote was to shake things up a bit - I expected more action after my shameless bandwagon. Unfortunately, I tuned back in close to nightfall and the latest update had me still on J23... I wasn’t sure if it was some situation where I didn’t properly unvote or if it wasn’t allowed or anything. Then there was that late update that showed me on BJ. I kinda just froze at that point... it looked like Aladeen wanted to flip and he was right - that inactivity leading up to nightfall looked and felt bad for sure. Should have made some kind of a play considering how bad I looked anyways. -

The party requests information on BJ’s MO when it comes to being called out? Does he usually get defensive like that, or double down on trying to be extra helpful? The former is usually the most incriminating, to me at least, but I can’t remember how BJ plays at all. SC’s posts stood out last night but it’s not nice to lynch the new guy round 1. He’s also a rather laid back poster on the rest of the forum so the party is double against lynching him this round. It’s shamelessly self-preserving but MR is right to push a more active member for lynch. Way more meat to go on than a less active player. Agree that J23 is choosing weak targets. vote J23 -

The regime is reduced to benign party member... sipping on that victory gin. Co-dictator Aladeen with the strong showing so far. Would be a surprise to the bellyfeels if both 112 and MR were town at this point. -

Sure, I’ll play this one! -
Yeah, I’m not completely writing him off - still hope he’s back in 2020. Just a little less bullish on his upside after 3 years abroad. I do think his offensive game will be much more polished when he returns. It’s more that I’m worried he’ll come back thinking he’s some offensive dynamo and not want to put in the physical work he needs to really dominate the NHL. I think even then he’s a reasonable 4-5 guy. Just not the 1st pairing behemoth I hoped he’d be unless he comes back willing to continue working on his game.
-
Pretty much. If I had to pick, I’d take AV or Green over Willie but if you’re going to use hindsight I don’t see how you can crap too hard on the guy... he was given mission impossible with this club. It’s just easy jokes for the wannabe Botchford bullies at this point. Also, trying to paint Tryamkin as some kind of martyr/hero is just gross. As much as I’d love another physical presence on the back end he’s not considering a return until 2020. Two more years or Russian rust on his NHL game. It’s worth a kick on the tires but as the likes of Juolevi, Hughes and Woo start to take over will there even be room for him? For some reason I thought he was coming back for 2019. 2020 is a loooong ways a way for us and will be a lot more competitive on the back end than 2016 was.
-
There’s no way you can pin the bulk of Tryamkin’s departure on WD. The guy left after WD was fired. Willie’s no Scottie Bowman but he was handed mission impossible here in Van and kept the team playing hard despite zero prime talent. His Olympic stint was a classic no-win scenario as well since Canadian has-beens are somehow believed to be better-than. Maybe he needs a better agent. His biggest mistake was picking Van over Pitt. That article hinges on two things: a bad press conference and a weird pick in the shootout. WD’s Canada beat the Czechs for the bronze in the rematch, too. Losing to Germany stinks but realistically, was Canada expected to win that thing? (Just like, realistically, it’s pretty amazing Willie made the playoffs at all after the stinker of a season Torts had.). The guy won a bronze medal with plugs when teams like Czechs, Sweden and Finland went home empty handed. I’m not sure how that’s considered a failure.

Good ol Cheech!

I think Pettersson, Juolevi, Gaudette, Demko and Dahlen all have a good shot at playing this season. Youth will be served. It might not be right out of camp but all those guys have the ability to contribute and if they’re ripping in Utica I’d expect to see them at some point. It’s a big difference between relying on them and having no other veteran options and giving them an opportunity over 82 games.
-
College works for me. There’s no real risk or downside to that path. He should have a great year!
-
Yeah, we could sure use a blue chipper on the back end. OJ is kind of forgotten but he has the size / skill to be a regular. He might have an adjustment period in the A while Hutton and Pouliot duke it out but I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do as well. Exactly. It might not happen on the last day of camp but it’ll get sorted.
-
I believe that. Canucks tripped up with Jake in 2014 and someone if not all of management have been deliberate in not pushing the kids into the limelight. As an overall approach these past years, I agree with the strategy. For Hughes, though, he has the AHL “out” that Jake didn’t.. as well as a high skill game that is elite at any level rather than relying a lot on his physical tools like Jake. Again, I’m fine with whatever Quinn decides but I think the pro route could work if he goes this way. We still have Olli to watch! Maybe Linden’s input is why Q is taking his time to really think about it.
-
That argument kinda works against you, though, as Brock had a fabulous season and those 2 games didn’t mean a thing. I’m loving the battles heading into camp... others will run around like chicken little with his tail feathers on fire. Guaranteed a kid or two people think should be on the team gets sent to Utica after pre season. I also guarantee those players, if they keep up the success in Utica, will get a proper NHL look before the season is done.
-
No kidding. Especially since JB has stated he’d make room and has a history of being almost ham-fisted in his approach to the roster, assets be damned, if he wants to get something done.
-
On Hughes: I’m fine if he goes back to college. Won’t hurt him one bit and the extra gym time will be beneficial. I’m also good if he goes pro. The fact he can play in Utica and take a “break” for the world Jrs is big for him. He’s proven he can play with men it’s just the 82 game grind I’d be cautious on. We also have a dearth of LHD so if he slides out of the lineup on the odd night for, say, Hutton that works too. Lots of ways to manage his season if he goes pro.
-
If he earns it, great. Sutter or Beagle can play wing. Problem solved.
