  1. And Pathrik is tied (at 17 points) with his twin brother Ponthus Westerholm for the Lukko (team) scoring lead. Swedish twins FTW!!!
  2. Pronman has Luke Hughes at #2 in his “way too early” top-20 for 2021: https://theathletic.com/1372733/2019/11/14/pronman-way-too-early-top-20-prospects-for-the-2021-nhl-draft/
  3. Well, if the new arena is really gonna be cone-shaped, I’m calling it the “Calgary Shove It Up Your Saddledome.”
  4. Kinda love that Rick Jones (RJ Financial) is still using Garrison’s client testimonial on the website: https://www.rickjonesfinancial.com/services/professional-athletes/news
  5. Pretty clear from the photo in the article that it wasn’t Justin Trudeau who said that, but it was actually Evil Twin Justin Trudeau, so therefore the PM gets a pass.
  6. I can’t run down the quote, but Rathbone has said that his goal is professional hockey, and that he will turn pro when he and his advisors feel he’s ready developmentally, assuming he’s offered a deal (which, based on his performance, should happen). He’s said he has no interest in delaying his pro hockey career, but also doesn’t want to rush anything. If I were to wager, I’d bet he’ll get offered a deal at the end of this season (assuming his strong play continues and there are no setbacks), and happily sign an ELC with Vancouver.
  7. Assist for Malone tonight on Cornell’s 2-0 goal.
  8. Jack even took a faceoff tonight! I know, he lost it, but still...
  9. Most NHLe calcs suggest a point in ECAC is “worth” roughly 3/4 of a point in Hockey East.
  10. Glad to see Pod went out for the handshakes. Hopefully that means he’s gonna be ok.
  11. They’d just need to keep a guy like Bachman or McIntyre on the books. I don’t think goalies have a games played category for the minimum exposure requirements (unlike skaters), they just need to be under contract or a pending RFA, and meet the “third year professional” status
  12. True, but their are still plenty of NCAA programs that make their freshmen “earn it” and will stick almost any rookie on the fourth line because upperclassmen are somehow “owed” all the spots at the top of the lineup. I just appreciate seeing Madigan tap these kids early on for key roles. The Northeastern program has been a really good pipeline for Vancouver in recent years, and I think part of this is that they aren’t hesitant to give their recruits early opportunities, which can only help their development. Of course, there can be a “too much too soon” factor throwing kids into top lines, but Madigan seems to have the right touch and knows how to develop young players. I agree though that it’s easier for a coach to want to commit to giving a player an opportunity when that player is returning that commitment for four years, rather than a guy who looks at college as a pure stepping stone and doesn’t plan to stick around. Still, that’s just part of college hockey and in most cases, the short term players are top level talents and high draft picks, and most coaches are happy to have those kinds of recruits in the lineup, even if it’s just for a year or two.
  13. Glad to see McDonough finally hit the scoresheet. And kudos to coach Madigan and the Huskies staff for sticking with the kid in the top-six. I like the way Northeastern isn’t afraid to give their talented freshmen chances to play big roles. We saw this with Madden last year, who was slotted in as #1C from opening night and really made the most of his opportunity. Hopefully McDonough can do the same.
  14. Scrolling through this thread and saw these two posts in quick succession and kinda threw up in my mouth a little.
  15. Now up to 16 points (6G 10A) in 10 games. Palmu scoring right now at a rate the Finnish league hasn’t really seen from its players since the 80’s and 90’s! (I know it’s only been 10 games)
  16. Righthand shot, center/wing, 6’1”, 200ish lbs, scored over a point per game in the USHL. Honestly, if we use every 6th rounder until the end of time on players with that kind of profile, you’ll see no complaints from me. To be fair though, I think @JamesBlondage was just admitting he wasn’t super psyched about the Malone pick, which is fair. I don’t think he was really saying it was a bad pick, per se.
  17. Welp, that’s that. Comets lost one. Fire Cull, fire RJ, fire JB!
  18. Our other college Jack had a goal tonight too. First of his collegiate career in the Cornell season opener. EDIT: just beat me @JamesBlondage
  19. Rathbone with 2 goals now. Has 7 shots tonight and still some game left to play.
  20. I can’t tell you 100% whether or not he’s worth a contract. I’m not sure myself. I’d say yes, he’s worth a gamble though, so I guess I’m in the “sign him and see what pans out” camp As far as what kind of player Lockwood is, here’s a stab at a profile. It’s up to you whether or not this is convincing enough to say he’s worth a contract. Lockwood has great wheels and excellent top end speed, owns a good shot, and some really good hands (especially in tight and at speed on breakaways and penalty shots/shootouts). He plays a very physical brand of hockey, especially for a slightly undersized guy, and he can be an absolute wrecking ball on some shifts. Plays much bigger than his size. High character, hard worker, loyal, and by all accounts just a heck of a young man who’s well liked by coaches and teammates. Really good motor and brings lots of energy to his shifts. Hockey sense is maybe a little spotty, in that he has great individual instincts, but sometimes seems a beat or two slow on decision making within the team structure. Doesn’t seem to have high end vision in terms of game mechanics and anticipating other players movements and locations. Not necessarily an outright weakness, just not quite a strength (at least in my opinion). Defensive game is maybe a little spotty too. Can be a really strong two-way player at times, but can also struggle making some reads. A work in progress (and there has been progress—he’s already more than capable playing at both ends at the college level—but he’ll need to continue to work and absorb some further coaching as a pro). Ultimately, he’s probably going to make or break in the pros as a bottom-six guy who will play a physical game, provide speed, bring energy, and score the occasional goal (often off of individual efforts like breakaways). Has the skill to convert on the offensive chances that come to him, but maybe doesn’t quite have the goods to really be an offensive creator at the highest levels. Has pro level skating, a decent enough bag of tools, and the drive and tenacity to make the most of his opportunities. Still a long shot to become an NHL player of any significance, but he’s not a kid I’d bet against either. Overall, I like him a lot and hope that he pans out. He’s far from a sure thing, but I’d definitely be willing to give him a contract and the chance to prove himself.
  21. I’d also love to see the next CBA add options to contracts. Like player elected and club elected additional option years. And early contract termination options as well. Similar framework to what you see in the NBA and some other leagues. Adds some real flexibility that can mitigate certain risks and offers benefits for both sides (players and management).
  22. Have to wonder how much longer we’ll see teams go with the “big” UFA extensions. With the sea change that’s happening around RFAs and locking up players to huge extensions through the prime years of their twenties, I could see teams eventually moving away from handing out max term deals to players entering the declining phase of their age curves. Would not be surprised if the norm eventually becomes giving out huge deals to RFAs and then giving shorter term or even year to year deals, still at high dollars, to UFAs, and just paying them market value on short deals. UFAs in general are overpaid, but some of that was rewarding players who’d been underpaid through their ELC and RFA years. Now that there’s been a market adjustment around the RFA deal, I’d imagine a UFA adjustment may be on the horizon.
  23. That might be the best thing for everyone. If Palmu can finish near the top of Liiga scoring this season, he may be worth a draft pick to another team. I don’t really see the fit for him in our future lineup, but he could catch on with another organization (still a long shot to make the NHL of course). Recouping a draft pick would be a good result IMO.
  24. Forgotten prospect Petrus Palmu has scored 11 points (4G 7A) and is a +7 through his 8 games played this season. That’s good enough to lead the Finnish Liiga in points per game (among all players with >1GP).
