  1. I think I wanna come out with a Canucks/Comets themed beer or coffee blend. Call it “Goalie Controversy,” because that’s what seems to be brewing these days.
  2. Had that post ready and was just waiting on shootout to finish. DiPietro has been outstanding. 1.62 GAA, 0.940 sv%, 3 wins in 3 starts.
  3. Lockwood with a goal again tonight: Unfortunately they’re trailing 3-1 in the dying seconds of the game.
  4. Wow, saved 38/39 tonight, and perfect in the shootout, to secure a 2-1 win for Utica. Named the game’s first star.
  5. Ty has another goal today, bringing him to 5 goals in his last three games. Still a period to play and the Huskies trail 2-1.
  6. It has been a pretty amazing journey. He went from the consensus “best goalie not playing in the NHL,” to a young NHLer who struggled, to a disappointment/bust, to a underachieving/below average goalie, to an average NHL starter, and now arguably elite. It’s really come full circle with Markström, and Clark deserves huge credit (Cloutier too). It’s going to be very interesting to see if Marky can maintain his level of play long term. Right now, he’s a clear cut top-10 goalie in the NHL.
  7. Yeah, agreed—basically zero chance of a one year deal. Plus, it’s not really much help to tweak things to leave Markström UFA, since Seattle could just convert their expansion draft pick to a UFA signing. They could target Markström for their number 1 goalie, and sign him during the expansion draft’s free agency window (when they get a crack at all the unprotected free agents). And the way Marky’s been playing, he may very well be putting a huge target on his back, as far as the expansion draft goes (if he’s left unprotected). Was reading in the Athletic how our goalies this season were just over 8 goals above replacement through 8 games (meaning our tenders have prevented at least one goal against per game, compared to what would be scored against replacement level goaltending), and I’d assume that’ll be 9 GAR after tonight. Which is crazy good. Marky’s GAR last year (in a career year) was around 15. Right now, he’s pacing for close to 70 GAR (which would be unheard of). Of course small samples, but just shows how good he (and Demko) have been. If Markström keeps up anything close to this quality netminding over the full season, we’re talking serious Vezina votes. It’s still early, but one has to wonder if Clark and Marky are just starting a run here that’s similar to what Clark accomplished with Bobrovsky in the Columbus years (including two Vezinas). Long way from here to there, but if the goalie we saw through the second half of last season, and we’re now seeing to start this season, is the goalie Markström is going to be for the next half dozen years or so, then I’d say a Vezina or two could very well be in the future. EDIT: If the reasoning behind leaving Markström UFA is so that he won’t have an NMC and require protection, then that’s sound reasoning. However, I’d hope that if Marky gets signed, the deal will have no expansion year protections or have an exposure clause, avoiding any need to protect him. I agree that most likely we need to protect Demko, although performance over the coming seasons will ultimately determine that (we may trade Demko, depending on whether Marky stays elite and how our prospect goalies develop).
  8. Imagine if the Canucks actually stayed healthy this year and they sent Gaudette down to join this Comets group when Roussel came back.
  9. Highlights from tonight: Love Madden’s cellys! Fairly tame tonight by his standards, but that stick twirl on the second goal was still pretty slick. We’ll have to wait until later into the season before Tyler brings out moves like the kayak paddle, bellyflop slide, and Tiger Williams stick ride.
  10. Loved Baer’s comments tonight (1:28 mark of video) where he praises Jasek’s play at center and talks about how he and Goldy are trying to help, teach, and push him to be the best player he can be. Such a great development opportunity to have two NHL pros on his wings.
  11. Brutal hit by McCarron yesterday left Gaunce bleeding profusely and wobbly. Eventually doctor called for a stretcher. Gaunce week to week with a severe concussion and a broken nose. Tough one to watch.
  12. Madden with two goals tonight. Game tied 2-2 in the third.
  13. Happy to see Cull took my advice and started using Jasek on the PK.
  14. First star tonight. A fair amount of that honour came down to an AHL rookie winning his first start in his home building, but DiPietro was solid. Only faced 18 shots (saved 16), but can’t really fault him too much on the goals he gave up. And then shut the door over the final 40, including some key saves. Obviously got great run support from his mates with the Comets scoring 6 and doubling up the Crunch in SOG, but still a strong AHL debut for Mikey D.
  15. Even better start getting 10 points in seven junior games.
  16. Well, to be fair, I just answered your question straight up. You asked to name another GM from the past 10 years who’s blown 2 top-6 picks, and I gave you a guy with 3 blown picks in 4 drafts, who one who also was employed by the same team for a dozen years, including 4 more years as GM following his most recent blown pick. And if we want to start splitting hairs about “blown picks,” like you’re doing with Strome, then Virtanen and Juolevi deserve the same benefit.
  17. The Wilson Method NHLe calculation puts the MHL at 0.31, which would be around equal or slightly higher than the translation factors for the OHL and WHL, and definitely higher than the QMJHL. More standard calculations put the MHL slightly lower than the CHL leagues, but not significantly (some recent calcs had the MHL at 0.24 and the QMJHL at 0.25). In general, it’s not far off, statistically speaking, although stylistically there are definite differences, and I’d say the team-to-team and game-to-game consistency/quality is more wide ranging in the MHL compared to the CHL. Still, I think the MHL get seriously underrated and that many draft eligible players putting up big numbers in that league should be compared nearly apples to apples to top prospects from the CHL, when comparing scoring production for draft rankings and the like. Same goes for the USHL, which actually rates very similar to the CHL. I mean, had Bobby Brink scored 50 goals and 100 points in 68 games in the OHL (vs 68 points in 43 USHL games), he’d probably have gone much higher in the draft than 34th overall.
  18. Garth Snow comes to mind: 2011: Ryan Strome 5th overall 2012: Griffin Reinhart 4th overall 2014: Michael Dal Colle 5th overall
  19. Definitely. Here’s my suggestion for Loui’s new job:
  20. Definitely an early candidate for the draft’s all-name team. Sounds like a video game character with a brutal finishing move. I like that he’s a forward too. (F)Red Savage Although (D)Red Savage is pretty badass. Chaz Lucius (just above Savage) is pretty good too. EDIT: sorry Ty Madden, I’m gonna stop with the OT stuff in your thread
  21. Yeah, he’s killing it to start the season in the USDP. Including USHL outings, he’s scored 7 goals through his first 12 games. Luke has been playing first pairing LHD for the US U17s. Interestingly, their first line center has been 15-year-old Jack Hughes (no relation). I don’t want to make this the Luke Hughes thread, but open spoiler for some recent highlights from Luke:
  22. That’s that crazy thing. He could end up being a Quinn Hughes quality elite talent, but scaled up to NHL Dman average size.
