[Signing] Kings re-sign Adrian Kempe
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I guess $7million plus for Clayton “47 Points” Keller is making people question what 30 points is actually worth these days? -
Either they cut one more (likely a Dman), go down to 22 players, giving us $7million plus for adding Boeser, forming a 23 man roster (22 active, 13F/7D/2G, plus Roussel, who would go on IR, but still count against cap). Or they LTIR Roussel, paper guys around to max the cap relief, and have around $9 million to play with for Boeser, with a 23 man active roster, Roussel on LTIR (24th player but on LTIR).

[Signing] Coyotes re-sign Clayton Keller
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Interesting comparison. Horvat was awarded a 6 year deal (buying 2 UFA years) at 7.33% of cap, after producing 117 points in his first 231 games (0.51 points per game). Keller gets 8 years (buying 4 UFA years) at 8.77% of cap, after producing 114 points in his first 167 games (0.68 points per game). And Keller still has one year left (2019-20) on his his ELC. EDIT: Hard to say which deal is better, if you’re looking at values on the day these contracts were signed. We have the benefit of seeing Bo develop into a player who’s now worth more than his contract. Keller could easily do the same. In fact, it’s quite possible the Keller deal proves itself the better bargain over the long term (especially with those extra 2 UFA years). However, at this point in time, the Keller deal definitely carries risk, while Horvat has long since proven himself deserving of his contract. -

Honestly, never heard of this guy (Jim “Boomer” Gordon). When I first read the title, I thought it was about Boomer Esiason. Now that guy (Esiason) actually knows a thing or two about hockey. This guy (Gordon) is a second-rate Boomer and not worth my time.

Vasily Podkolzin | #92 | RW
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to GoldenAlien's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Yeah, he just needs to work hard in practice and be ready for when a teammate gets benched/injured and he gets the tap to join one of the regular lines. His time will come. And if not, a loan to the VHL wouldn’t be the worst thing (although we’re a fair ways away from that). Hopefully he’s just being brought along slowly but when he gets his chance, he’ll prove himself and force his way into the lineup as a regular. -

SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to GoldenAlien's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Looks like he finished the game with only that 41 seconds of icetime on 1 shift. I didn’t see the game so can’t comment on whether he made a bad play and got benched, or (more likely) it was just a case of a young player not getting any icetime, which really isn’t anything unusual. Pod was dressed as the 13th forward today (SKA dressed 13F/7D) and it’s quite common for those spare guys to get under a minute of icetime, sometimes even zero. -
[Signing] Blues re-sign Ivan Barbashev

Was hoping for a four year deal, just for the Barbashev Quartet lols. -
I think language was only really an issue for Tryamkin, when it comes to our Russian players, and if we could go back in time, it’s possible that having a translator on staff when Desjardins was coaching might have helped with communications. Certainly there were some misunderstandings between the club and Tryamkin. However, I place a fair amount of the blame for that situation on Tryamkin’s agent (Todd Diamond), who should have done more to ensure that his client knew exactly what was expected of him, and was better prepared for his first NHL training camp. I’d also put a fair heaping of blame on Willie Desjardins, who really seems to have some issues with Russian players. And Big Nik also should have done a better job with his English lessons, and probably should have been more proactive in his preparations, regardless of the quality of advice he was receiving from both his agent and the hockey club. With Podkolzin, he’s already been taking English classes and I’d expect he’ll have no issues assimilating when he arrives in a couple years. Pod is such a hard worker, and does everything at 110%, so I expect he’ll be more than ready for the NHL, and everything that entails, when he finally comes over. Goldobin’s English is already very good. No concerns there.

I think “capologist” is mostly a media-created term anyway. I doubt you’ll find anyone listed as a capologist in an NHL front office/hockey ops. But Jonathan Wall originally took over many of Gilman’s duties. And Benning has also delegated most CBA related matters to Chris Gear. I’d imagine those two handle “capology” for the Canucks. If I were to speculate, Wall probably handles tracking (likely with some junior staff member doing day-to-day number crunching), and Gear is there for risk management and legal expertise, when it comes to finalizing contracts, and long term planning assessments, when it pertains to club salary/cap. I don’t think the Canucks have somebody on the payroll as a “capologist” but between Wall and Gear, and their subordinates, they have cap matters well in hand. Gear specifically has seen his role and influence grow in recent years, when it comes to contracts and CBA issues, as Benning continues to delegate many of the matters where he’s had some earlier missteps.
-
Problem is that the “capologist” that Benning’s referring to is the guy from New Era who helps out with the player designed hats.

Yeah, according to his agent, Juolevi has been skating and training with NHL players in Finland. He’s expected in Vancouver shortly.

[Signing] Lightning sign Pat Maroon
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Nice signing. 900k is great value for Maroon. Also helps offset some of the loss of Miller and Erne by adding a guy with size to what’s otherwise a pretty small forward group in Tampa. -
2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to Qwags's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Well, I mean, it kinda makes sense. This is the GM of the team that “didn’t see any value in a guy that had not ‘hit the gym.’” And this is the GM of the team that sees value in players who are “able to produce and not be at their physical peak.” -
[Signing] Canucks sign Arturs Silovs
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Abols was a beast for BIK Karlskoga (Allsvenskan) at the tail end of the previous season too. Pretty much put that team on his back and saved them from relegation. Quite possibly a late bloomer, as you say. Will be interesting if he can continue to put up strong numbers, considering he’s generally been seen as more of a checking/match-up center than a pure offensive guy, so if he can prove himself a solid two-way player who can put up points in the SHL, he might very well still have a chance to develop into a pretty decent player, especially with his size. Might even get some notice from NHL clubs. But back to Silovs... I seem to remember Brackett and Clark raving about Silovs’ natural ability, but expressing some concerns about his technical development to-date. Will be interesting to see how quickly he's brought into the pro system. I imagine the Canucks want to work closely with him. Will be interesting to see if he’s loaned to the Barrie Colts, or if they jump him right into the ECHL/AHL (since he’s not subject to the CHL/NHL agreement) and try to have more control over his development. -

[Report] Eriksson “NOT” likely to be moved on

+1 for the title change -
Yeah, I guess the writer mistakenly used the jersey numbers for the ages. Would’ve been really funny to see a section on a “75-year-old Michael DiPietro.”

From the article: “For now, Kielly is one of three goalies listed on Vancouver's roster, along with 25-year-old Jacob Markstrom, who started 60 games last season for the Canucks, and 35-year-old Thatcher Demko, who started nine games. Kielly said he'll be given a fair chance in training camp to show what he can do.”

Has the Western World Lost Moderate/Centrist Politics?
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME replied to Rob_Zepp's topic in Off-Topic General
Not sure if it’s been talked about in other threads, but looks like we won’t be seeing much in the way of “moderate/centrist politics” in Canadian newspapers. The conservative media bias, when it comes to most of the print media in this country, will be taking a sharp turn even further to the right. Hard to imagine what a more conservative Postmedia would even look like. The National Post not conservative enough? Already strongly right-leaning papers told they need to “become more reliable” in their conservative politics? Wow.
